He's right. Well, sort of. Originally Shirou was a self-insert and he's been expanded upon. Before you go 'Oh well fucked shit happened to him', that is not a defence. You can, as you said, put some empathy towards somebody even if you've never experienced that shit. Shirou is intended, originally, as a self-insert. He hasn't fully shaken it. It's a difficult situation and I largely have the same feeling.

He still follows the ideal of being a Hero of Justice though, Heaven's Feel Shirou actually made a more realistic choice and decided to just save/protect Sakura and the people close to him, not every single person in Earth, that's what in my opinion makes him way better than Fate Shirou.
Anyway, for me is like this:
Archer=Miyu Shirou=HF Shirou >>>UBW Shirou>>>Fate Shirou=Prisma Shirou.
