Why are so many people hating on yaoi all of a sudden? I remember back in the day it was fine, but now everyone seems to be really bashing the genre and not just ironically but saying it's the worse with the only exception being something like "Yuri on Ice".

Yaoi was a subgenre that exploded with the Manga/anime resurgence in recent years, and it brought in fans. They just happened to be the most intolerable, genuinely awful crowd of shippy fangirls imaginable. It's a shame.

I always thought is was a phase that happen in the 2000s, then when the audience grew up they realized how cookie cutter and non realistic it is. That's kinda what happened to me although i still read some but I now realized that a vast majority of it is shit.

the gay aspect takes over the story. it overshadows what progress happens in the story and goes out of its way for yaoi its as if the story stops.

like other posters have said it's because of the fans, but it's not necessarily that fujoshits are magnitudes worse that waifufags or moeshitters etc, but grils are "alien" and inherently less tolerable to anime fans. a moeshitter is pure cancer, but you can still connect and empathize with them on some small level. not so the fujoshit.

Because usually Yaoi stories are set in either a grimdark world or an insanely saccharine world and the characters behave nothing like actual men, even gay men. They also do not seem to have to deal with any issues that would arise from their homosexuality. Because most of us are men, we know what men are like, and they just are not like that.

Obviously, cute girls doing cute things shows and yuri are also unrealistic. But because it is removed from our experience, it does not clash as hard with reality. Granted, due to the poor plotting and storytelling of Yaoi/Yuri, watching any single gender show is a waste of time. The only exception is if you enjoy SoL.

It's not the best example of yuri but it still worked well even though if it was gay.
