So who else thinks the extra stories are unnecessary? I feel they damage the pace and tend to reveal too much, like Ryou seeing Satan. That is, when they're not simply useless.

No. France and Italy essentially got the deluxe edition and Seven Seas is bringing that. You can read all about the changes of that here There's a Go Nagai 50th edition out in Japan but I haven't seen raws of that yet. I know Nagai redraws some pages in volume 1. I don't know about the other changes.

I'm with you, the additions are enjoyable as their own sidestory to flesh out what we already know, but the original's pace already feels just right (well aside from the weird transition between the spider to the next story, anyway) that changes to it just feel unnatural
