I like the difference on the opening bits of flying through the letters. Japan's version makes it seem like some grand adventure, wonderous and wild. The Digimon are friends in a strange fantastical world.
The American version gives it a tingling sinster edge, like these kids are falling towards danger, hyping up the survival aspect. It's a good contrast. There's less music in the American too, so you get more time to take in the black void and emptiness they're falling towards. Their allies aren't friends, they're necessities in a world of killer monsters. Very different feelings to set the stage.
Shame it devolves into garbage after. Iconic garbage but garbage nonetheless.
