This show is about Violet's adventures.Any other character is just a medium to develop her.You can draw some similarities with Mahoutsukai no Yome whch at least has more than 1 character with interesting backgrounds

>This show is about Violet's adventures
Not really. She's a plot device.
Sure, Violet gets snail-pace character development with the people she encounters, but it's not her show at all, not her story, and the characters she met could have their own shows instead. Not that they're that interesting.

Imagine this is just comfy Gilbert x Cattleya running the business. It'd be 1000 times better.

Wouldn't get mad if every character was the same but there was no Violet.

Kyoanus really needs to find better writers, and experiment with stories that are less sanitized and more messy.
How am i supposed to sympathise with a post-war story full of bishounen AND cute girls that belong more in idol shows.

It's okay. For me, the problem is it's not structurally what I was expecting at all. I was looking forward to a serial story through which Violet finds friends and learns to be human, but instead we got... the episodic version of that.

OP here, pretty much this. You read my mind.
The episodic stuff doesn't catch my attention at all, I find it as uninteresting as it gets.

How about using western authors?

gross
I'd watch western shit instead if I wanted that

Come join us Darling.

>implying I'm not watching both
I'm having a hell of a time with DitF, buddy

Isn't Violet Evergarden from that LN contest Kyoani had or something?

IIRC Hibik was the second place winner and VE is the first place winner.

Can you tell me what's gross about western literature?
And I don't mean things like the script for Hannah Montana in Disney channel

>flopped as far as sales go
>Sup Forums doesn't care for it
>still 8/10 on MAL
doesnt add up.

nothing
I just don't want anime written by westerners
the appeal of anime is that the writing is rooted in japanese culture, instead of being just aesthetics
otherwise we get shit like the new voltron show, or 2011 thundercats

Yes, it's unfortunate.

VEG is underwhelming. Generically A1: The Mecha Show is actively bad.

MAL kids are pretentious and have no taste

>VEG BTFO
youtube.com/watch?v=Z4WkI1Vb0wc

You're not the only one. VE is the most dropped show of the season.

>Generically A1: The Mecha Show is actively bad.
Not really
And it's barely generic for an A1P show
feels like I'm watching old Gainax, and not just because it shares some DNA with Eva. The character relationships and goals are well-established with good motivations so far, the mysteries of the plot are interesting and the action is well directed.

I don't think you understand what I meant.I want KyoAni to adept western novels.Being rooted in japanese culture is not a fucking requirement.Do we really need those tropes?

>Do we really need those tropes?
The absolute state of Sup Forums. Thanks crossboarders!

Where others see depth, I see pretense. Or a committee.

On that note, I shouldn't come down on A1 as I did. Going by past track record, I think my problems with the show are Aniplex's doing.

Kyoani isn't bad because they're not using western novels
Kyoani is bad because their writers can't do proper drama because they don't invest the audience first. They're great and giving us emotional moments in comedies of all things, but when they go for drama they jump into melodrama really fast.

I read a few reviews which gave 8~10, and yeah, that's basically it.

You went to MAL? Please go back there and stay there.

What a fucking brainlet.

Surprisingly I haven't dropped it yet, because I just can't believe so much effort was put into a show for it to be so underwhelming.

Wrong, Hibike belongs to another publisher and VEG was rejected by all publishers but Kyoani.

>Where others see depth, I see pretense. Or a committee
Seriously? I see the opposite.
If DitF was generic, the actual sexuality would be tamer while keeping the fanservice. The main character would be less driven. The romantic angle would be a joke instead of an interesting romantic triangle filled with genuine frustration.
The only generic thing about the show is that they start in an academy for pilots.

>Brainlet
Oh... You really make it too easy to spot you.

Still, VEG is better than most light novels so far so that doesn't take away its credibility as a novel.

It's the second result that shows after googling the anime. Even worse is that the rating shows under the link. Hard to skip

Most anime characters are attractive.

Also, you seem to have a very superficial understanding of idol anime if you think the characters in this show belong there.
And although I'm a fan of idol anime, I don't at all mean that in the sense of being laudatory of idol anime characters.

Yes,I post on more than 1 board. What a fucking surprise.

>Going to MAL
>Ever
How new?

>Violet Evergarden (ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン Vaioretto Evāgāden) is a Japanese light novel series written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. It won the grand prize in the fifth Kyoto Animation Award's novel category in 2014,
I was wrong about Hibike but VE was still the LN winner for Kyoani's contest.

Best anime episode was anime original, I guess it speaks volumes.

This is another issue the anime has. Sometimes it feels like it's about Violet, other times it feels like it's about the people she met, in the end it's nothing

Yes, I believe we established that. Now, before you post again, try lurking a bit longer. At least until you can scrub the smell of new off yourself.

>Sometimes it feels like it's about Violet, other times it feels like it's about the people she met
This is very true.

>in the end it's nothing
However, I fail to see how you come to this conclusion. Are you not just getting frustrated by the narrative whiplash?

You really think that the romance isn't just some generic love triangle huh? How many anime have you seen? 5? 10? 13 maybe?

The main problem is lots of young guys in a post-war world. Just. Women probably don't understand what war is.

I'm not such sad piece shit, like most Sup Forums and have 14 AOTS this season like every season, which includes VEG and FranXX.

This is a really roundabout way to say the writer didn't give two fucks about the supporting cast and their existence exists solely to push Violet's characters' development.

the one with the short-haired girl, right?
it really wasn't that different from the rest
I'd say episode 2 was the best so far, since it focused on Violet herself trying to adapt.

sys.Sup Forums.org/a/imgboard.php?mode=report&no=168568323

But Kyoani botched the adaption, imagine if Re/Zero changed the protagonist from an slightly ugly and highly awkward otaku to a bishounen that looks like a kpop star. The emotional struggle of the protagonist would be inauthentic, along with making the female characters seem brainless (they just like the protagonist cuz he is cute, instead of being touched by his self-sacrifice).

I understand. But our views are opposite one another, unlikely to ever be reconciled.

Anyway, there's no point to further discussion. I only brought up my criticism because of the 02 shitposter. And it is in the shitposter's interest to create ire between fans of marquee shows.

>and VEG was rejected by all publishers but Kyoani.
Sounds legit.

No, I am frustrated by the lack of impact.

Is it about Violet? but we didn't see her confrontation that happened in the end of the fifth episode, we had the huge turning point of her learning to write letters too soon, a job as simple as copying books should not come after writing letters for a princess with the risk of starting international incidents.

Is it about the characters? but everything is shallow, like the conflict with the marriage in episode 4, or the brother's story in episode 3 which was rich of possibility to compare him and Violet as two veterans but was not used.

like 300?
Also you're just dumb to differenciate between a generic love triangle and an interesting one. This isn't a romantic comedy. It's not about who wins the MCbowl, but about how the characters will form and change their relationships. It's clear from the second episode that Cocona will never get Hiro, but how she cares for him and fights 02 to not get him killed, or how she has to accept that her love isn't going to be reciprocated is interesting.

This shit is offensively boring.

Holy shit, you're so adorable,I wish I could pet you.

What are you even on about? Iris's episode seemed far more about her development than Violet's. As did the Princess's.

The anal devastation VEG causes is intriguing.

>300
Oh man, I'm laughing. The romance in DiTF is so laughably generic that it physically hurts me. It feels so forced it's not even funny. You know how they could avoid all this shit? Have Ichigo confess to Hiro and have Hiro reject her. And no, kissing him doesn't count as a confession. Not only that but your show blatantly baits you into cuckoldry in episode 3. If that isn't generic, I don't know what is. You can literally see that shit in the majority of not only anime, but also hentai shit. Lastly the latest episode just cemented how lame the romance subplot is of DiTF. The way Ichigo confronts 02 and the way 02 talks in such a way that Ichigo would misunderstand her was just retarded as fuck. It's made to force drama. It tries too hard and it shows. There's a reason DiTF is flopping. It's a generic show that everybody has seen before with a new coat of paint.

I like the show, and it's absolutely stunning visually, but it is definitely a lackluster show.

>but everything is shallow
How is it shallow? Your disappointment about the 3rd episode comes from them not using a plotline you personally wanted to see, but really they had no reason to use. Maybe they would, if the story of the episode was remotely about some relationship between him and Violet, but it wasn't. It was between Violet and his sister -- the two dolls. Not the two war vets.

Also, haven't watched the 5th episode yet, so I won't comment on the first part of your post.

>Have Ichigo confess to Hiro and have Hiro reject her. And no, kissing him doesn't count as a confession
kids don't even know about love, it's a plot point
she's basically rejected anyway, don't get how not being able to pilot with her when it's a sexual metaphor can be more clear
>It's made to force drama
now you got into retard territory

He's also bullshitting, characters from episode 5 were far from shallow, he's just using the same old buzzwords shitposters use.

As a fellow fan of the show, I agree, even though I'm aware my opinion at this point is of course premature.

I of course may also be expecting too much from KyoAni, even still. I just want them to create another POW onto the anime world, like they did in the latter half of the last decade.

Every Kyoani show that spends effort on animation is like this with the shitposting.

Comparatively, boring shit like Tamako Market didn't get that much attention until the brown loli showed up. And then everyone forgot about it again because there was no plot.

>Kids don't even know about love
Whatever you say. Love isn't taught, it's instinctively in you. And saying they don't know love won't make it true. DiTF is just a shittier version of aquarion evol in terms of the romance subplot.
>now you got into retard territory
02 could've just said she cares for Hiro. But nah, let's force drama between these two love rivals just because.

Have fun with your AIDS of a show.

>Whatever you say. Love isn't taught, it's instinctively in you.
but confessions are taught
social cues are taught
relationships are taught
stop being obtuse, it's dumb

>How is it shallow?
Because things are simply what they are, there is never a layer, an interesting though.

The brother's story is simply the brother's story, it's not about what war does to different people.
Iris's mother wanting her to marry is simply that, it's not about society imposing marriage on a girl that wants to be free nor it's not about Iris' struggle between a guy and her job.

The 5th episode is better in this regard but it suffers from the lack of running time, the prince and the princess love each other and everyone wants their marriage, the only struggle is the princess leaving her maid, which is ok, but should have been about leaving the nest. Partially because I don't see why the maid could not simply follow her.

Episode six is the same. Leon understand why his mother left him. But we never explore his father and Violet travelling, his idea that women do this job to marry rich man is never challenged - or even explored, because I still don't see why a rich men should marry a doll working for a company instead of his secretary, for example, but this is a issue introduced far earlier than this episode. We don't know why they got female dolls paired with the guys, why there are only guys in the astronomy building.

This show looks so inferior to its own PVs. They tricked us to watch.

>but confessions are taught
No, it's you breaking out of social stigmas saying you can't be honest about liking someone.

>Love isn't taught,
but fucking confessing your feelings and understanding them doesn't just happen. This shit takes years, and teenagers are really dumb about these things. You'll never be a writer because you don't understand people at all.
>02 could've just said she cares for Hiro. But nah, let's force drama between these two love rivals just because.
Then there would be no conflict or story, and also people don't act rational because you want to. Your arguments remind me of tumblr girls talking about how conflict is "problematic" but in a different direction with a different set of justifications.

>it's not about society imposing marriage on a girl that wants to be free
Not him, why would you want that? It's been done to death, and we were lead to believe that was the case during the first half of the episode, it wasn't until she opened up to Violet that we realize she's actually in love with the prince and her fears (plural) lie somewhere else. That's not shallow in my book

>The brother's story is simply the brother's story, it's not about what war does to different people.
And it was fine, you're calling characters and conflicts that don't suit your tastes and expectations shallow, why?

>all this people arguing about the romance in Filthy frankk anime

does people already forgot about Kiznaiver or what?

Not as much as you've forgotten your English classes.

Also
>We don't know why they got female dolls paired with the guys, why there are only guys in the astronomy building.
Because they're using 19th century morals, genders are not on equal footing in their world, it has been implied more than once that being a doll is a woman's job.
>But we never explore his father and Violet travelling
I have no idea what you mean by this, the story wasn't about his father, Violet traveling? What do you mean? Her job requires her to travel a lot.

> the only struggle is the princess leaving her maid, which is ok, but should have been about leaving the nest
Again, why? You keep calling the plot and characters bad because it doesn't go the way you want it. What the hell.

An anime with classic western style writing (not modern garbage style of course) would be pretty cool honestly

You are confusing my issue with episode four (Iris's marriage) with my issue with episode five (Princess' marriage).

>why
Because, like I said, what we see is what we get. I call it shallow because her brother story is simply her brother story and it's not explored. It can be different from my expectation, for example it could be how Lucullia was tired of feeling like his mother if you prefer, or how society in their world treats injured people.

Guys, stop shitting on he anime. The studio is doing really well with the shitty source material they have.
They are literally throwing money at shit. It's a beautiful shit regardless of your opinion.

>le fanbasewarxd

you just saved violet evergarden

...

I guess Hiro doesn't know how to confess, but he knows to act embarrassed around naked women then? Or to act embarrassed while being called a pervert?
>Then there would be no conflict or story, and also people don't act rational because you want to. Your arguments remind me of tumblr girls talking about how conflict is "problematic" but in a different direction with a different set of justifications.
A conflict that could be easily avoided but wasn't just makes for a retarded plot point. FranXX doesn't know what it wants to be. That's it's problem. Does it want to be a mecha show? Then, sure be a mecha show. But, leave your basic tier love triangle romance lifted straight out of a harem show behind.

this is my thread, you get out

>it has been implied more than once that being a doll is a woman's job.
Ok. But is astronomy a male only job? why are they pairing male with girls? you don't need dolls to copy books.

>the story wasn't about his father
No, but it could have. Or it could have been about him fixing his issues with women.
Instead it was about the simplest level possible, he understood why his mother left him. It didn't fix his idea that dolls did their job for the sake of marrying rich man, which is something Violet should argue about given that she is a doll. Which, by the way, doesn't have to have him being wrong, he could be right.

This is not something I want just because. It's all things that logically follow from the situations we are given and presented and should be elaborated on if the point is the story arc of the character of the week.

> You keep calling the plot and characters bad because it doesn't go the way you want it
I am not calling them bad, I am calling them shallow. It's not the same thing.

>kyoani can't into character development
what a surprise, it's almost as if the last time they did this properly was 10 years ago in haruhi

We were talking about authors of the source materials, ESL-kun, and whether they are actually the best that Kyoani can find. Answer is yes. Where the fuck did you get "le fanbasewars" from that at all?

Stay in school, user.

>Ok. But is astronomy a male only job? why are they pairing male with girls? you don't need dolls to copy books.

Did you actually watch the episode? I'm genuinely curious.

>I guess Hiro doesn't know how to confess, but he knows to act embarrassed around naked women then? Or to act embarrassed while being called a pervert?
Kid is sheltered as fuck but that's basic education. Take in consideration that the authorities clearly not tell the kids a bunch of shit. They get embarrassed by nakedness but don't understand that what they do in the cockpit is similar to sex. You are just disregarding context and information.
>A conflict that could be easily avoided but wasn't just makes for a retarded plot point.
you are literally asking them to act like robots in romantic situations, user
it's fucking stupid on your part

If you are not 12, you can ignore them and just talk about this anime with people who wanna talk about it.

All the good anime either resemble western film literature and imitate western writing styles or are only good because of their aesthetics. The appeal of anime for non-Japanese viewers is solely aesthetic as well, ask your average normie why they don't like anime and 99% will point to the bad writing, cliches, and obnoxious pornographic elements. In other words, everything but the aesthetics.

As long as cancerous non Japanese are kept out of production I see no problem with where they get their source material.

>He needs to be taught love!
>But lust is definitely instinctive
Admit it, your show has writing as good as VEG if not worst. There's a reason why VEG and DiTF is underperforming in sales. They both have garbage writing.
>you are literally asking them to act like robots in romantic situations, user
it's fucking stupid on your part
I'm not. I'm telling you that the romantic subplot is retarded. It's shit. It's unneeded.

>writing makes a show sell well
>bakemonogatari
Fucking lamoing @ ur life my man

I clicked the wrong post

You keep doing it my friend. The anime isn't exploring the things you want it to explore so it's bad. The brother wasn't the point of the episode, it was Lucullia and her inability to communicate with him.

>What we see is what we get
I see where you're coming from with this, but you're forgetting how we learn new things from these characters mid-episode, what we see at first isn't what we get in the end. For a side character that appears only once, that's far from shallow.

>Ok. But is astronomy a male only job? why are they pairing male with girls? you don't need dolls to copy books.
Because dolls are trained to type fast and with extreme accuracy, the scribes are there to translate the texts and dictate for them, and yes I could see Astronomy being a male only job in Violet's world, just take a look at all the famous astronomers from the 19th century.

>No, but it could have
It could have, maybe it would have been more interesting, or maybe not. This again is a moot point.

The one thing I agree with you is with his remark about dolls, it's too specific to not be some kind of chekhov's gun, then again this same remark was made in another episode if I remember correctly, so maybe it's part of how people see dolls in this world, not just him, maybe it will be explored in a later episode.

Yes. Please answer my questions.
We were shown that the astronomy students were only males. Was it because they are only males in general or because they were selected like this? why?

Why did they need the dolls and not a pair of boys, one dictating the other writing?

Dolls are trained to type fast, scribes translate the texts, they needed to complete the job in 2 weeks, so bringing in dolls to accelerate the process makes sense.

I think they completly missed the point by giving her absolutly zero personality. You can't make good character with unidimensional trait in a serious show, it'l like the "full retard" talk in Tropic Thunder, nobody will care about a character who's full autistic with no emotion.

not even him, but it's not
>no, but it could have
it's
>no, but it should have
and it's not doing so. it's just shallow to present an stories in an episodic format and then not show the logical culmination of it's events.

I don't see why it would matter if a non-Jap is involved in production as long as they keep stupid memes out of it (which most westerners love to put in their media, but not all of them)

I don't know if this is bait or not, but I guess I'll answer you in case it's not.
>We were shown that the astronomy students were only males. Was it because they are only males in general or because they were selected like this? why?
The astrologers are probably majority male because back then, there was a class divide between men and women. The most likely reason for astrologers being predominantly male is because the women were either discouraged to pursue an education, or just simply wasn't allowed.
>Why did they need the dolls and not a pair of boys, one dictating the other writing?
See Notice how he says "Common language"? That means that the books are written in different languages. Some of them the dolls cannot read thus needing help from the astrologers/scholars to dictate them what they should type.
