Just got done watching Evangelion and EoE. I liked it alright. 6/10.
What I don't understand is all the hype that the show gets for basically being a love story. Shinji and Asuka basically circle each other the entire series and wake up together. That's what happened, right?

I think the reason why people like it so much is because of its ability to allow the viewers to come up with any sort of interpretation while still being enjoyable with it’s mecha battles and engaging characters.

Ending was weird. Couldn't tell if the choking was the director trying to be an edgelord or "artistic." Either way, he stopped as soon as she caressed his face. He then started crying over the guilt over trying to hurt her. That was my take on it.
Shinji never loved Asuka, he might after EoE but not during or before. He'd might fuck her though (and fail) if she forced the subject.
You completely missed the point if you thought Eva was a love story. Love is certainly a part of the greater themes, but the show itself isn't about some tragic romance.

Yeah, no shit, he's attracted to her. It's obvious he has feelings for her, as evident by him saving her from the volcano and the way he reacted when Toji called them a married couple.

He doesn't treat her like a goddess though. He completely indifferent towards her for the duration of the entire series just like he is with everyone except Kaworu. The only time he ever seems to show any intense feelings towards her is when she gets killed and when he LITERALLY wants to kill her.
If the EoE was meant to conclude with the idea that he was crying about hurting her, the entire movie would be pointless as that would be totally irrelevant to the plot.
Shinji has feelings for Asuka; he just acts distant towards her because he's scared of opening up and being hurt, not because he thinks of her with indifference.

Yeah, he is interested in her as the opposite sex and like her as a friend. But that isn't the same as love. And there is no evidence he have more fellings for her then for example Rei.
Most would save their friend if they could. And the Toji thing is just a common anime trope.
