What was the message of this series?
It seemed like it was trying to be philosophical but I'm not very versed in that kind of thing, so I am having trouble wrapping my head around it.
What was with the final few episodes? Humanity had their lasts remnants of humanity stripped away? Is it supposed to be a metaphor for urban sprawl and the effects?
Or did they just want to make something vague that the individual could interpret for themselves and find their own answer?

Either way it was fucking incredible, one of the best anime I've ever seen, I was hooked from the first episode and couldn't stop watching until it was done. The atmosphere of the art and music, the dramatic angles and cinematography, really evoke some complex feelings in me. I've never seen anything quite like it.

only intellectuals can understand it. like Monster

I guess I'm not an intellectual. Moe is one hell of a drug

Also, this guy. Did he succeed in what he descended underground to do? How did he effect the ultimate turn of events, or was he trying to do something less planned?
I feel like he was instigating things on purpose and he didn't care if his life ended as long as he got the ball rolling on the destruction of the human race.

Yeah, that's why I'm asking. I'm not a giga-brained rick and morty worshipper, I want to see other people's understanding of it so I can comprehend the whole story myself.
It's literally 2deep4me

Monster was a pretty normal thriller and wasn't super hard to understand though? Maybe by weeb standards I guess.
It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't really think there was a specific "message" that was trying to be conveyed to the audience. Just felt to me like a sad depiction of the end of humanity.

That's what I got out of it. I figured he just lost it either suddenly or because of the slow death of the surface and decided he would just mercy-kill the last bit of humanity.
He was a pretty good villain, but I wish he had more exposition on his character.
I haven't seen that one. I know people that like it but it takes me forever to get around to watching longer anime.

I still didnt understand Kanno's plan...guess im like this user

Glad you liked it, now watch everything else Yoshitoshi Abe has worked on:
Serial Experiments Lain
Haibane Renmei
NieA_7

and then get depressed that Despera got cancelled and wait cautiously for project D to come out.

This part really got me.
After seeing all the shit that Ichise endured, all the struggling he did to survive, in the end it meant nothing. He tried and tried and he couldn't end up changing the future. Couldn't even save the girl, really.
It felt like my last hope died when he finally gave in and just waited for death.
I think even the most stone-cold people could feel at least something after watching the ending.

But weren't you glad that he at least tried to and didn't become another braindead plant or emotionless ghost?

I watched Lain but had a hard time understanding it too. Thankfully there are a lot of dedicated fans who already dissected the show and explain it in depth on the internet, and that game to help address a lot of topics and questions.

Haibane Renmei is one of my favorite anime of all time, though. Not quite the same emotional rollercoaster as Texhnolyze but the mystery and setting were what got me to like anime in the first place.
That, and the wing sprouting scene is permanently burned into my memory. It really took me by surprise.

I didn't really think about that. To me it seemed like a complete defeat.
There's definitely a silver lining in being able to retain your humanity, I guess. He lost his life though, so it's not like it mattered too much.
Maybe it'll allow him some rest in the afterlife. Maybe the others are trapped in those robot bodies forever?

>Haibane Renmei
>NieA_7
don't

Why? They're both really comfy and have very unique atmospheres and more direction than most boring "slice of life" type shows. More people need to give NieA Under 7 a chance desu.

It's complicated. I think he just wanted to have some fun without having a greater scope plan of saving the people of Lux from Texhnolyzation... however if he had been allowed to continue what he was doing he would have saved everyone from Texhnolyzation.

Yoshii is an unintentional hero whose defeat marked the beginning of the end.

He wasn't trying to destroy the human race, far from it. His actions inspired emotion the true condition of humanity. In the time that he was alive, he made the people of Lux remember their humanity.
Yoshii was more human than anyone else, he's the reverse of Kano.

I think I'll give it a shot, when I have the time.
If it's really anything like ABe's other work, I'll find it pretty engaging. I don't usually pay attention to specific creators when it comes to entertainment, but everything he's had a hand in has ended up being really interesting.

The lead up to and the ending itself is Ichise rejecting the rampant nihilism by focusing on and trying to save the only person that ever gave a shit about him. It seems like a tiny pathetic objective in the midst of all the shit that was going down but that was all that mattered to him, it gave some meaning to his life for a brief moment. I personally don't think it was all meaningless but I can see why you or others would, hey at least he died with a smile.

Oh and about Yoshii, I think all he wanted to do was stir things up and for people to feel alive and have a purpose again after living all his life on the depressing, dead surface. He didn't want the underground population to end up like everyone back at home I guess.

It's ok bro. the finest art, or art in itself, have this intent sometimes, to bring some deep shit that can't be described in packs of acknowledgement, aka words. there is some control/intent to guide the trip but is ok to the creator don't know what exactly the thing means, is an unique experience for each one... maybe bring an unique experience if you see the shit again. this is the domain of inexplicable and scare shit out some ppl.

negotiate some explanations/conclusions and try rationalize the thing is ok.. but... you not explain the thing, you live the thing. after all, it was your feelings user. weird synapses in your own brain.

Enjoy! Just don't go in expecting it to be as heavy as his other stuff. It's a much more laid back show than his other stuff (was to be more of a break for him and his cohorts before they began Despera) although at the same time it feels very grounded.

I guess he was kind of a symbol of pure tenacity. He never let anyone look down at him for long, and he didn't dare let anyone take pity on him. Even after getting his fucking leg and arm severed, he remained self-reliant until the end. He even found purpose and direction in life when everyone else seems to be emotionally despondent and accepting of the decline of humanity.
He seemed even angry when someone saved his life with prosthetics, like they had defaced him somehow by installing parts that weren't his own flesh and blood.

He's a surface dweller that got bored of the idyllic overworld so he descended down to Lux to observe true human nature
Starting a war in between the city's faction was an means to that end

Thanks for the input guys. Only a few people showed up but I enjoyed reading your explanations. I think they're all pretty reasonable interpretations. Not quite the same message I got from it but it explains some things I didn't really catch. Anime like this really sticks with me.

It's been fun user. I consume dumb mindless chuuni shit like air and water but discussing things like this are cool too.
