Got a better option. It's an adventure game for the most part. You play as Subaru. It uses checkpoints as you say, but Subaru retains knowledge from each loop which is shown in unlocked dialogue options. Subaru can't ask about things if he doesn't know the right questions to ask, and he can't act with knowledge he doesn't have.
In addition, there's a time limit of some sort. Getting a perfect deathless game should be near impossible.
