If you were given an opportunity to adapt one anime into a live action movie, which one would you do? And how would you do it? Also, you can only make one movie, not a two-parter or a trilogy.

I wouldn't. Why would I ruin an anime I care about by making it live action? Why would I bother remaking an anime I don't care about?

Something episodic would work the best. You can just tell a full lenght story with the setting and characters. Something like Mushishi, Mononoke, Kino, Black lagoon or Darker than black.

Jojo's bizarre adventure: phantom blood. But only if I can get Chris Hemsworth To play Dio Brando. The dude can do ham, and he has the body for it. But now I only need Jonathan.

No name easily, with real comet that hits japan

Assuming the entire completed series has to be adapted not a single arc, I choose Steins;Gate
For a single arc, either Berserk Golden Age or Black Swordsman

Berserk
It would work very well if they could make dragonslayer swinging to feel natural

Fate zero
With jack gleeson as gilgamesh
And katheryn winnick as saber

Boku no Pico.

We Japanese are all ugly.
It's impossible to adapt anime into a live action movie.

That's the best we can do, without cgi.

Yukikaze.
Whichever chapter is fine. It's adaptation-friendly, since you can present as much or as little of the story as you like. Plus you don't need stellar acting, since the main hook is the plane porn. It's an easy sell for the American market. I'm afraid lots of CGI would have to be used though.

I can see it working with some camera tricks

Liam Hemsworth

I would rather see Berserk as an HBO series. They can do rape, tits, gore and acting. While I dislike GOT, I can see that they can do amazing things for tv.

Ange Vierge or FAG, I can't decide

But that one is already happening.

Wait, what? It's the first time I'm hearing of this.

I'd say Berserk
would be an original Story (by Miura of course) set during the Black Swordsman Arc
might work out

This is info from 2013. The project might be stuck in production hell forever.

>Studios adapt GitS and Battle Angel Alita for western audiences
>Instead of Attack on Titan
I don’t get it. It has all the CGI violence that you think would make millions at the box office.

For AoT you need European locations.

Or concept based shows. Shows where the concept is interesting enough, that the characters can be changed and it wouldn't matter that much. For example:
>Eden of the east
>Dirfters, Fate/zero or any other historical figures battle royale
>Death parade

>Black lagoon
the only one who could make justice to that is Quentin Tarantino

>Darker than black.
I could see the guys who made John wick, doing justice to this one.

Also, where is my bebop movie? Dont the burgers love that shit?

>Fate / Zero
This shit writes itself. No idea who to cast though

Nobody cares for space stories anymore.

The secret to making a good adaptation is to pick an animu/manga that's based in reality. The more CGI and special effects used, the higher the chance of your film being absolute shit.

Gin = Benicio Del Toro
Hana = Jared Leto
Miyuki = Emma Stone

10/10 give me my Oscar now.

Fate/ would actually be perfect for a live action adaptation. All you really need is the framework of a Holy Grail War and then the studio can fill in the blanks with characters and an original story that would be more suited to a theatrical format instead of attempting to butcher source material and make it fit into 2 hours.

I was thinking about a live action Steins; Gate the other day. At first I thought it could be done, if you could adapt it with a wider western audience in mind ala Edge of Tomorrow. But could you take it out of Akihabara, and remove the 2chan references and have it still work?

>and remove the 2chan references and have it still work?
The dub switched out the 2chan references with general nerd culture jokes (All of your bases belong to us, shut up Wesly, the cake is a lie).

Otaku will always say your live action movie sucks, no matter how good it is. Just look at death note, it was legitimately good but people flipped their shit because they didn't like the actors.

I feel like Baccano would be pretty good with a live adaption, though finding actors to play the characters properly would be a nightmare.

It wouldn't be too bad on special effects, you'd only really need the immortal's coming back to life.

Jesus fucking christ, kill yourself.

Fucking this.

Psycho-Pass is probably one of the easiest to adapt.
Decent story, simple to shoehorn into an American setting, no complex themes or philosophy to brutalise in an attempt to pander to the lowest common denominator; it's basically Robocop minus the Robo.

[C] could also be very interesting since the concept of money is universal, and everyone loves a flashy fight.

I think I'd like a Scrapped Princess film though. There's scant few properties that deal with the idea that "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" and I'd kill to see the Dragoon fights with a high budget.

Ninja Scroll. Scene for scene recreation with good practicle effects.

>Just look at death note, it was legitimately good but people flipped their shit because they didn't like the actors.
You don't watch enough movies if you thought it was legitimately good. I'll agree that it wasn't the 2/10 shit that Sup Forums and Sup Forums called it, which I'm sure was driven by the fact that L was black, but the movie was very much a mediocre watch.

L's scene where he flipped out and charged at Light was pretty good, tho.

Death note, if casted right. You literally need two actors who could play off eachother well enough.

>I think I'd like a Scrapped Princess film though. There's scant few properties that deal with the idea that "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" and I'd kill to see the Dragoon fights with a high budget.
With only one film allowed, it would feel too rushed. Not worth it.

I'd argue that someone watching an anime dub would still get those kind of references, but for a Hollywood movie to be successful it needs to be targeting the widest demographic possible, which is why I think it's practically impossible for an anime to get a Hollywood adaptation and do well; it's either too niche, or you change it so much to appeal to a wider audience that it loses it's original charm that won it's initial audience

You're probably right.
A trilogy would be fantastic but that's not within the purview of the OP's query.

>Baki the grappler.
You just need a bunch of good martial arts actors to go at eachother with all the best moves. And a story about a teen who enters the world of grappling to become a better fighter than his father.
>Inital-D
Same thing, a naturally talented young racer with a old trueno enters the world of street racing and beats everyone.
>Utena
Give this to Wes Anderson and watch the queers eat it up.
>Paranoia agent
It would work if given to Nolan. God knows he has stolen from Kon before.

Anyway, voice acting in SP was so perfect. I really miss this degree of professionalism in newer anime.

Isnt scrapped princess just like the matrix, but in fantasy land?

Never watched the Matrix, I can't tell you.

I'd take the money from that opportunity, scrap the whole project and adapt something live action to anime. Live action < Anime always.

Preface to spoilers: If you haven't seen it already, watch Scrapped Princess you shitcunts. It's great, and written by the same dude that did Chaika.

Kind of. Aliens invaded and are ostensibly keeping humans in a captive breeding program; maintaining us at the level of middle-ages technology so we don't wipe ourselves out completely (MAD) with nukes and shit, while culling us if our numbers get too big. It's not virtual reality like the Matrix- people live and exist in the real world, and there are relics of a greater, much more advanced pre-conquered Earth which still persist. eg. People can use magic, but that "magic" is really just machine code.

I think the villains in both were similar. Not really evil, just trying to maintain order (until they go genocidal). They also had the ability to control random humans. Also, both stories have the chosen one who has to save the human race.

Pic related are the ones which I could do justice to. When I was bored, I used to write scripts/plans for movies based on these shows.

Once I become a filmmaker, im gonna do things a little bit differently. I would take the source, study it's themes, characters, plot points etc. Then construct a semi original story that stays faithful to the spirit of the source material. The biggest mistake anime adaptations do, is trying to cram 25 episodes into 1 or 2 movies. It just does not work.

The cool part is how the truth gives way to myth and fiction.
Like the Church constantly talks about this sort of Devil/Satanic figure called the Dark Lord Browning who is anathema to their faith, that was cast down by the good Lord Mauser several thousand years back along with his 12 Dragons in a climactic battle for humanity's souls. Then you find out that Browning was the name of the commander who led the resistance against the invading aliens, and that the 12 Dragoons were the elite class of knights most capable of fighting back.

There's a few common themes, you're right. It's been a long time since I watched the Matrix (and I never watched the sequels) so some of the similarities may have just flown past my foggy recollection.
Thanks.

Anime doesn't translate well to movies. The Kenshin live action movies just barely translated into decent movies. I can see LOGH being done as a tv series if they made the world building and sci fi element more believable.

I dont know about LOGH. Seems impossible.

Now this can only be done as a trilogy.
First movie:
>Reinhards rise to power.
>Capture of Iserlon
>FPA invading the empire and loosing.
Second movie:
>FPA and Empire civil wars.
>Reinhard becomes emperor and the empire strikes back.
>Reinhard takes down FPA.
Third movie:
>Yang's crew rebels and fights Reinhard again.
>Yang gets assassiated.
>Reuentals rebellion.
>Final battle between Julian and Reinhard.

>Easy option.
Fate/Zero or any other Fate series. The general concept of the Holy Grail War has a ton of potential.

>Potentially good.
Macross - Would maybe be best to split it into 2 or 3 movies but a love triangle and big space battles would be cool. The final scene with DYRL would be great.

Also after watching Altered Carbon on Netflix, I dunno how they fucked up GITS. If they rebooted it in the AC style and directors, it could be incredible.

The love triangle was the weakest part of Macross. No need to adapt that.

They only handled it badly because in the series, Minmay was just an annoying brat and in the movie, Misa had no personality. If they were able to get movie Minmay and series Misa in the same movie, it would work a lot better.

I would adapt either Kiss x sis, Yotsuga no sora, koi kaze or Oreimo. There is some true untapped potential in those shows.

>untapped potential
I know what you are talking about.

Can me and my sister be the main stars?

Sundome.

Shoujo Ramune.

that's a big camera

Why do they need such big-ass cameras with their high level of technology? I don't get it.

Bigger camera = better footage. Fact.

>Can me and my sister be the main stars?
Only if your sister comes over my place for an audition.

Alright.

Konosuba starring Jack black.

>Battle Angel Alita
Shit, fuck, what?

Yeah. It's happening.

Hmm, it looks like they’re just adapting the OVAs. Not bad but I was hoping to see Master Den.

Just imagining the car scene with Cranston as Light's dad makes me wet.

>Texhnolyze
>Trigun
>Kaiji
My man.

>What are the lulz?
If your first response to OP's qeustion is to preach instead of say something interesting or funny you need to fuck off back to wherever you came from. I

I have good and/or bad news user...

I'll fund those.

Loliball. I just need to do a Disney channel style sports movie. But with little girls.

Nausicaä

>Nausicaä
>Camren Bicondova

>Master Yupa
>Jackie Chan

>Princess Kushana
>Cara Delvegine

>Kurota
>Andy Serkis

>Director
>Ang Lee

>Music
>Yoko Kanno

If you trim it a bit I think "Baccano!" could make a pretty good live action.
With an all Americhan cast with the same level of voices.

I would give it to Guy ritchie.
youtube.com/watch?v=yAgI51QvWxs
Tell me this doesn't scream Baccano!

For some reason, after a bit of thought I came to the idea of a Del Toro-directed Parasyte movie. I think that'd be good.

Fund it

He is probably the only director who would use mostly practical effects for Parasyte.

Vagabond

It would be bad as an anime but I can see clearly that a live action movie would be good.

Would mahou shoujo work in a movie format?

I dont think so.

Monogatari by Wes Anderson.

Neon Genesis Evangelion directed by Stanley Kubrick. I love that mans works.
