Yuno Gasai falls in love with Yukiteru "Yuki" Amano.
Unable to confess, she is gifted by a deus ex machina with a special diary and the boy's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, she immediately calls Yuki, and is overjoyed to find out that he has a crush on her as well.
But, the next day, when she recounts the previous day's confessions to the boy, he only looks at her with a perplexed, almost fearful expression, asking silly things like "How'd you get into my house!?" After some investigation, she finds out that the boy she called is not the same boy she fell in love with. In fact, he doesn't exist in this universe at all. He is the alternate universe counterpart of her crush, who has fallen in love with her AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.
Hijinks ensue as they strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip each other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of YANDERE.

Yuki has his moments of manning up, especially towards the end, but they're only ever very brief.
The general flow of most encounters is Yuno doing the first 90% of the work while Yuki fearfully watches, then Yuki temporarily growing enough balls to do the last 10%.

As far as crazies go Yuno is very well fleshed out. She likes Yuki because she's totally head over heels nutty of course, but everything she does makes perfect sense in the context of her world.
She allies with Yuki because she loves him, his Sup Forums diary is the strongest, and her diary breaks if he dies. All valid reasons. She tries to foster his growth as a partner and tries to accommodate his desires to make him happy. All proof of her love. All her actions in the Future Diary war are strategic and ruthless. Kill the enemy, don't get killed, go on a nice date with Yuki. She never tries to do anything to hurt him or ignore his feelings outside the war.
When Yuki breaks down and loses his will to fight, she kidnaps him and builds a doom fortress to keep him alive. Normal girls won't even build pillow forts!
Everything gets even crazier with all the timeline shenanigans near the end. Yuno sets it all up so Yuki only has to kill her to win, and he refuses. At that point Yuno really loses it and go full Yangire, but the power of love wins out in the end.
It's a fun ride and Yuno definitely carries the series. If you don't like her you won't like Future Diary. As far as crazies go she's the best.
