Why do people hate on katanas in anime so much? They're superior weapons due to their length, you can keep other sword-wielders at bay.

hatred of weeaboos to the point of being the other extreme
The length of the katana is about on average 60cm while the length of the average long sword is 85 to 110.
As per why their featured as often. I would say it gets boring to draw the same sword every time. While western swords have a far more diverse in use and design.
That show was such fucking trash. Even back when I was into ecchi harem bullshit I remember hating it.
Just use a spear.
>length
shorter than a longsword
Is it 2010 again?
>They're superior weapons
Not when you have a weapon even stronger than the katana.
what
katanas are relatively short
not to mention any weapon that can stab can use it's length more effectively
>Why do people hate on katanas in anime so much?
Who the fuck are you talking about? Go back.
>They're superior weapons due to their length
Katana's aren't notably long.
Spears are primarily hunting, formation or horse back weapons. In duals it tends to become cumbersome as the shaft gets in the way.
Japanese swords aren’t longer than their European contemporaries.
>as the shaft gets in the way.
This is a very sexual post.
>guarenteed_replies.webm
nice
>halberds
>shaft with a sword on the end
>stab a nigga from a distance haha
>dual spears
>due to their length, you can keep other sword-wielders at bay
The thing about katanas is that they are useless against virtually any type of armor and sword due to its lack of versatility and durability. Katanas are literally oversized kitchen knives.
What was Sup Forums's reaction to this when it aired?
I think halberds are more like spears with an axe on the end, you're thinking of glaives
Against no armor/light armor, Katanas are more better to use then western swords. They are also lighter
But against armored opponents, use western swords. Western swords are more like sharp steel clubs though
Did he just do a fucking double horse flip?
Duels are the least important kind of combat though. If you’re fighting all alone you probably fuck up somewhere along the line.
That's the one, but I see most examples of Halberds appear to have a needle point like a rapier, so still decent for stabby-stabby
>They are also lighter
This is actually a myth. Katana have fairly thick and heavy blades. What makes them overall a bit lighter on average is that they're comparably short weapons and have a much smaller cross-guard and less substantial pommel. At the same length, they're heavier though.
Also, I'd argue that a longer weapon is always the better choice, e.g. a man armed with a longsword like in can harm a man armed with the katana while out of the katana's reach. Merely pointing the blade at someone keeps him at bay.
>Western swords are more like sharp steel clubs though
This is a myth too. Western swords have very distinct tapering. Look at how thin and pointy the swords in become towards the tip. With such a weapon you cannot club people, they're not top-heavy enough. They're made to be thrust into gaps of armour, not club people to death with.
Reminder that muh glorious nippon steel is only folded 1000 times because their metal deposits are dogshit and they have to do that to get the impurities out. A big dick German sword beats a katana any day.
But this is Sup Forums, everyone knows that the bigger the group, the harder they job.
>They are also lighter
They're actually heavier than normal for swords their length due to the density of their steel. The thing about them being lightweight is a modern myth.
I fucking miss this show
Decent reception, the threads were pretty nice and with quite people following it. Thanks god shitposters didn't bother with this one.
I loved the first half of this show. The second part was terrible though.
>Western swords are more like sharp steel clubs though
guess someone needs to read the fucking gladiatoria
Katana are not only great at slashing but also stabbing.
They are excellent execution and assassination weapons as well.
The Iaijutsu technique is one of the most deadly and fastest moves which spells instant death for someone that is not fully prepared or armored.
For the armored foes, there are heavier swords and they can still be stabbed through the joints or helmet openings.
Truly the perfect weapon.
I cannot even begin to respond to your massive ignorance.
Yeah man, didn't you know? Spears are worthless, that length is a total vulnerability.
Unhandy in mass combat.
Look at he puny gladius. This pathetic shit built a 1000 year empire.
Talented snowflakes soldiers mean shit if you can equip 10000 men with basic equipment instead
>swords
Let's see your metal twigs get through this.

Lets see the man who can walk, let alone run, while wearing and carrying that.
>not choosing a Jian
I don't believe you, that doesn't look 2000 years old
Pila tactics and the Scutum Phalanx versatility were the actual war winners.
>They're superior weapons
They're inferior in almost every way.
>curved sword
>good at stabbing
>sharp end with good base
>not good at stabbing
Pointy stick>slab of iron
Hold it upside down and you got a blunt weapon.
Parry, sidestep, pin the weapon up the shaft. Follow through with a sprint charge and if your fast enough you'll get a thrust or decent slash across the misection.
>implying it wouldnt slice through you easily
Ken-sama, how do you do?
>slice
We are talking about stabbing, user, not slashing.
Have some respect for the honorable dead you fucker
He is still alive, the girl he was teaching will free him from the lake spirit.
>running with your arms behind your back
>while riding a horse
is this a paeody?
Start to forge Holy Katana with Holy Blessed Fire.

He looks fucking invincible
euro swords are way more versatile.
Look at his face.
There's such a bad understanding of physics contained in that picture I just can't even begin to understand how that person presumably went through the educational system and is still that stupid.
Spears are almost impossible to dodge because a small change of direction of your hands translates to a large change in direction of the tip. This means you can pivot it extremely quickly and dodging it is very hard.
If you pit me, someone with no weapon training, against an equally novice opponent I'd pick a spear every time.
It's better than a parody, it's avant garde.
If you don't have a shield, you're not blocking a spear thrust. No fucking way you can parry with a sword
the face of a man who has given up.
quadruple confirms it
Probably because of weaboos. Cant be too surprised to see katanas being so plentiful in anime because japan has that nippon pride, im just bummed we dont see enough maces. Hammers are used more often.
what anime is this? i tried image search but it didn't work (as always)
Take this shit back to /k/, because it sure does not belong in Sup Forums.
>mfw these are real posts
think you got it backwards. Grab a broom or shovel and try to pivot it.
The center of balance is closer to the tip.
I thought that went without saying that something would be in the off hand. Like a dagger or something. Also your not blocking your deflecting.
Do post your practical experience using spears.
>that is not fully prepared or armored.
So, peasants
>katanas in anime
The current batch of writers/animators are so far removed from history that they treat katanas like magical lightsabers.
>reverse search works perfectly fine
>literally has the title in it anyway
>he doesnt know about the murder stroke
>all that armor
>giant shield
>no helmet
3/10
ah I didn't think to check the title, thanks.
fuck image search though. that shit never works. especially not on webms
My zweihänder would cut you and your katana in half.
Stabbing your daki with your cock while thinking that you're wielding a spear does not mean that you have practical experience.
I'd love to see this go to /hemag/ but putting sweaty man drama put on /asp/ fucking filled that board for literally any other kind of discussion.
Just use wait you fucking nerd.
This and the psuedo intellectualism on this website about pretending like you understand things like sciences, engineering, and behavioral philosophies. See what I did right there? That itself was psuedo intellectual. You can't escape it. Nobody can. Sup Forums is not for discussion.
Projecting ?
This is a patricians weapon.
This man is a true intellectual
bandai visual took down the video but in the anime Maria the Virgin Witch a solder uses the murder stroke in a duel and rekts a nobles whole face
>that double horse front flip
Very fucking nice
>Spears are almost impossible to dodge because a small change of direction of your hands translates to a large change in direction of the tip. This means you can pivot it extremely quickly and dodging it is very hard.
You've got it backwards. You don't gain control over weapons the longer they get. It becomes harder to control and maneuver a longer weapon - the amount of change in the tip's direction does increase from a relatively small motion with a longer weapon, but the energy required to make the change, as well as the time required, both increase exponentially. That's why the ideal place to hold a spear for actual combat is close to its center of gravity near the center of the spear, and you only extend it fully in a formation with other spear users to keep the enemy as far away as possible. Go out and find a big long pipe and try to swing it around compared to a relatively short one. There's a major difference in ease of control.
>If you pit me, someone with no weapon training, against an equally novice opponent I'd pick a spear every time.
This is the correct decision, mostly because spears are very simple weapons and do not require training to be fully effective with, so they're good for novices to use. But they're still not ideal dueling weapons compared to swords.
Is this a bastard child of a spear and a sword? Because I want to adopt it!
Looks like a fauchard or at least something similar to that.
To be precise that's chinese guandao, it's more of a martial arts weapon than for actual warfare since it's too heavy for prolonged practical use.
Can someone explain what's the point of curved poleaxes/bardiches? Doesn't it defeat the advantages of being able to thrust? Sure, you can have spearate slashing and bludgeoning bits as well, like in a halberd, but doesn't merely bulking up or curving the blade hamper the weapon's thrust?
You use that bitch to slash a motherfuckers face open. Think of it as a real sword with a super long handle. You use it as you would use a sword, but the lenght of the handle makes the strike so much more deadly.
>Sup Forums is not for discussion
What? This site is suited to discussion perfectly. Granted, not necessarily quality discussion, but discussion none the less.
My waifu > Your waifu
DIscuss.
How does Sup Forums do it? Even with all it's flaws it still manages to maintain a level of quality far above the other media boards.
the centrifugal force of a larger shaft increases the slashing power immensely (without significantly increasing the weight by extending the blade instead), a naginata is basically made to slice off your feet
>
Admittedly, elitism weeds out most crossposting shit, whereas the inherent escapism helps avoid the politics.
I don't think we disagree so I'll reword my statement since I think I worded it poorly. A spear is lever with its center of mass approximately at its center. Using your non dominant hand as a fulcrum you can pivot the spear with your dominant hand behind it. Let's say you move your dominant hand 10 degrees down, the tip of the spear goes 10 degrees up in the same amount of time. But it's much more distance in the same time so it's higher velocity. Hence a small pivot of the hand results in a quick pivot from the tip. As for dualing, I was assuming no armor and no shields. I think most experts and novices alike would prefer spear in those conditions.
>swing it around
Wrong way to spear. Spears aren't so good at swinging and chopping. Spears excel at the lunge.
That neutral starting stance, where you're standing sideways, offhand slightly forward and holding the center, dominant hand back holding around the 3/4 mark. You've already got favorable reach vs a sword at that point, but the thrust you can do is completely nuts. Basically thrust forward with that back dominant hand, as part of a twist and step forward and letting go with the offhand - you've gone from half length held close, to 3/4 length held at full extension, with your entire body weight behind it.
You can learn this in a day and it's hard for a swordsman to deal with.
If he does know how, and it's a one on one duel, you'll die; he'll push your point slightly off center while turning his body, it'll glance off his armor, and then he's inside your reach and stepping in for a killing slash. If he doesn't know how, he'll die. Even if he does know how, if you've got buddies on either side he'll die if he tries to follow through and attack.
(Of course you can also do shorter stabs without letting go).
