It's a good ending because it has such an impact
A bad ending is when you get taken out of the show
For example, in muv luv when Marimo gets her head ripped off I was really distraught because she was my favourite girl, and although I wished it didn't happen, I still soldiered on. However, when Sumika recalls her tentacle flashback that took me out of the game and I had to wonder what the hell they were thinking with putting that in.

Brutal, that was such an interesting way to have the 'she's really gone' moment, the track playing then was gorgeous too.
Oddly, I think it's a happy moment as well as a sad one.
Shirase almost didn't go to the observatory because she was worried that she wouldn't be able to get closure and would be depressed for the rest of her life. Instead, she was finally able to release all of that pent-up grief and can now move on.

Just went and read it, that was dumb as hell user. It's just a coward who saw some shit and moved on with his life.
It was definitely for the best overall, but it was still a really heavy emotional moment for Shirase, it's pretty obviously implied in this episode that she never really thought of her mom as dead since they never actually found the body, she was always in a perpetual state of waiting for her to come home. Shirase needed the harsh 'she's dead, and has been for a long time' message in order to finally accept it and to stop having that 'waiting' feeling.
