It was going through that early transition period when Cel animation was done and everyone was going digital. The actual animation is pretty good though. Season 2 is really where it started to look decent.

Lucky you. I plan on watching that soon and making one. I'm trying to do as many Dezaki shows as I can. Think I might do Aim for the Ace first because that has less episodes not counting the mediocre sequel seasons.

The framing and blocking using diagetic boundaries, the layered colour design, the level of art detail, and the overall utilisation of the frame are great. There's nowhere you can look and not find something contributing to the overall atmoshpere and emotional meaning of the scene, it's a great composition.
