You may be confusing "the entire series" with MGSV which has mixed opinions pretty much everywhere.

I honestly believe he was one of, if not the best guitarists.

Please tell me why the dialogue in the game isn't awful. Gameplay could have been great but you've got bomb spraying, escorting, swimming and other things the break up what could have been a great stealth game. Boss fights weren't great too. But, again, the story is cringeworthy. Play through or watch it on youtube or something again. It's so bad. It tries to be dramatic and fails, tries to force a meta narrative and fails. Other MGS games aren't great stories either but they aren't such a whiny, overly 'emotional' cringefest.
