As Hardware manufacturers (Microsoft and Sony) and Developers have decided that the current hardware set up is the best they can do (cause anyone that tries anything different gets shitted on, WiiU, VR, etc)
the only thing they have left to compete and drawn in costumer is specs. and as technology evolves faster than ever. we are now seeing the repercussions, shorter generation.
is this what you wanted of vidya to become?

Don't see the problem here.
Henry Evans
If consoles keep going that road, I'm just going to stick with my PS4. The main point of a console for me was a pretty cheap box to just have in a closet for 7 years and occasionally play a game. I'm not going to "upgrade" every 3 years what the fuck kind of point do consoles even have then?
Kayden Myers
>you can buy 95% of 360 and ps3 games for under $10
As someone who stopped giving a fuck about online multiplayer years ago, this is the best solution.
Grayson Gray
PS4 announced they were doing the same first with the Neo. If they keep doing this, I will go console only. The whole appeal of consoles is I buy one on release then I don't have to think about it for 7 years. If they are going to release console upgrades like graphics card updates it makes the only advantage redundant.
Tyler Thomas

8TH GENERATION CONSOLE LASTED 4 YEARS

And next gen is going to last even less I presume.
PC is slowly but surely the way to go in the future.
Brandon Brown
Consoles have been getting rereleases for fucking ages now. If you don't know to wait for the last version or definitive version of a system to come out before buying that's your fucking fault.
Jacob Jackson
It's almost like consoles will stop holding pcs back.
Now if they could just get better cpus instead of mobile tier ones.
Daniel Anderson
The funny thing is that 2017 isn't "Next Gen" consoles. It's more like New 3DS than anything else. Sony promised 10 year life cycles with PS4 but completely broke that shit. Or skimped on it with this latest shenanigans.
Blake Taylor
>Announced even more Xbox exclusives coming to PC, including Halo.
So they are just marketing consoles to retards at this point, right? How have they not learned that retards only buy Sony and Apple.
Julian Hernandez
Its still 8th gen though.
Caleb Harris
This is quite a different beast than those rereleases though. These are markedly different versions with markedly different specs that threaten to cut off the current gen and force people to buy more expensive consoles... again.
Will people accept it... not likely enough of them.
Kevin Nguyen
They've been getting slim versions that are consume less power and shit. Not this hurr it's 4x more powerful than your old piece of shit xbone, this is the ACTUAL REAL XBONER

It's actually doing worse than PC, I kid you not. Even now, an i5 2500k sandy bridge OC'd is still competitive against the 2015 Skylake i5 6600k. It is outright pathetic when you consider that you will be able to drop on a GTX 1070 at under $400 by next year and beat both the Neo and Scorpio in TFLOP for less money than what those two will go for.
John Flores
>It's almost like consoles will stop holding pcs back. Nothing is holding PCs back except for the minority of gaming software revenue it accounts for and budget/staff limitations of development studios and publishers.

Jayden Taylor
I always dreamed of gaming consoles to become the yachts of massive tech corporations. Not something they design and manufacture to produce profit, but something they make to show off their greatness, a testament of their inattentiveness and a legacy, a monument of their capabilities.
Mason Rogers
Not really, there wont be any exclusive games on the new consoles you can't still paly on the older versions, but for example GoW 4 will take advantage of the better specs and most likely run 60fps on the Neo while it will only run 30fps on the regular PS4
Evan Nelson
All of Xbox's games are coming to PC and most of PS4 games will to.
Juan Morris
>Nothing is holding PCs back except for the minority of gaming software revenue it accounts for and budget/staff limitations of development studios and publishers. actually the only thing holding PC is that there is not a major PC publisher throwing money to developers

Anyway i hope the .5 consoles focus on having a way better cpu, it's currently a way bigger bottleneck than the gpu.
Easton Anderson
Which is utterly ridiculous. There's no elegant solution for consoles upgrade wise. Recall how that Sega's 32X upgrade was hated universally for one, and Sega's Neptune came out too late. The Scorpio and Neo should make anyone think twice about 8th gen consoles. Those two consoles will not be priced at the PS4/Xbone launch prices even if you buy them without VR option.

Basically this.
Console only pubs are the main reason. There is certainly a big enough market available through steam and GoG. And if they would actually release all of their games to all markets instead of locking shit up on their own shit "marketplaces" then more people would gladly pay for the games. Difference is they have to actually be competitive on PC. Which is something they don't have to do on Consoles because they can gate to one console and console manufacturers have too much control over their system for players to get much choice.
Jonathan Morris
Sony and MS is being fucking stupid, almost nobody is gonna pay full price for a slightly better version of the same console every 2-3 years.
What they should do is for the next generation of consoles, make them modular from the start, so you can switch out the CPU and GPU units to better models, and just release better ones throughout the lifespan of that console.
That way it's actually affordable.
Carson Allen
>because of the minority of gaming software revenue it accounts for. actually each PC sell is better than a Console sell
no licensing fees to a hardware manufacturer and no Royalty Payments.
Luis Butler
Oh? You absolutely adored how that you can attach that 32x Unit onto your Genesis? I thought consoles are about simplicity, not add-ons. I'd rather have the Neptune, but then again, Saturn came out.
That's the thing. I know you will keep arguing about 'muh exclusives' with regards to PS4, but Xbone wise? No. Most Xbone titles are multiplat with Win10.
Bentley Powell
>Imagine if Apple splashed large amounts of money for minimal benefit to attract people who probably already own one of their products >Imagine if GPU makers who sell to the console industry, the auto industry, the phone industry, the PC industry, wasted money securing exclusivity for a game that will run on their hardware no matter what platform it is And we're done.

PC gets the shaft because it's an afterthought. It's an afterthought because PCfags pirate games or buy them on sale; launch month sales figures (where the bulk of revenue is earned) are always a sad fraction of console sales and that's literally all there is to it.
Chase Reed

Look at the launch 360 and launch ps4 versions. Stop acting like there wasn't a PS2 slim, PS3 slim or a Xbox 360 Slim.
PS5 and new Xbox would make sense for late Q3-Q4 2017.
Lincoln Roberts
There is still zero evidence that these new ps4s and xbones are nothing more than just slim models or n3ds tier revisions that have no impact on video games.

No one will buy it. "PC is an open platform" is a dead fucking meme at this point. Steam is its platform, it's somewhat closed ($100 just to get on greenlight, let alone approved) and its high-profile AAA multiplat releases have turned PC gaming into just "expensive console gaming with higher fps".

they are budget PCs subsidized by big companies because they get huge licence fees for each game. They use exclusives to sell more than the competition.
not too complicated
getting newer better hardware is not bad. People upgrade their phones way more often than consoles
Logan Evans
And console gamers buy used. Only difference is that PC devs actually see revenue from sales. And Piracy, despite the bad rap it gets, actually forces devs to work hard and compete. With no other alternative it would help be the driving force making devs not bullshit people because all in all they could just say fuck you and get it for free.
Similar to how games were made much much better when the limitations of not having updates made devs incapable of fixing mistakes.
Liam Gomez
Yeah, may be but then he does take a nice 30% cut from every sale.

There's that meme again! Why did this become a meme anyways? Most of the ports are random shit that appeals to westerners. For instance, consider my ps4 library.
natsuiro highschool (ps4/ps3) senran kagura estival versus (ps4/vita) disgaea 5 (ps4) yakuza 0 (ps4/ps3) yakuza ishin (ps4/ps3) yakuza kiwami (ps4) edf 4.1 (ps4) nep v2 (ps4) omega quintet (ps4) summon night 6 (ps4/vita) utawarerumono itsuwari no kamen (ps4/ps3/vita) valkyria chronicles (ps4/pc) gravity daze (ps4/vita) yoru no nai kuni (ps4/ps3/vita)
Of these games, only one is on pc right now. Nep will probably be ported, but I've had the game for a whole year now and already beat it. Everything else is purely speculation with little to no likelihood of porting. Meanwhile, ys 8, utawarerumono futari no hakuoro, imas, valkyria azure and black rose valkyrie are coming out soon. None of these games will be ported.
Pc has the same problem as wiiu. Sure, it has great exclusives and I have one, but how can I not also have a ps4? I don't want to miss all these games. I've been playing some of these series for over a decade, like ys and utawarerumono. You'll never hear these games mentioned because they're sony multiplats, so people who only care about exclusives won't see them on any single platform list, but they're really great games and many of them will be localized too.
tl;dr pc is a secondary platform. When people say ps4 games are coming to pc, they're talking about western shit, not these games.
Blake Lee
>Perpetuating the piracy is rampant meme >Despite the fact Steam and GoG pocket tons of money >Ignoring consoles always had a bigger install base and far more retards willing to lick the wet shit from the manufacturers' assholes

You're literally missing out on almost nothing by not owning a PS4. This isn't shit like Moon and Mizzurna Falls, this is glorified mobage tier trash for idiots.
So far, the only game worth playing on the PS4 is BB. Eventually, it'll also have Nier 2, and maybe AC7. That's going to be the extent of the library for the console, and it'll only be worth buying in either 5 years or the day the jailbreak starts playing pirated games.
Mason Kelly
This definitely didn't start with N3DS. GBC is arguably just as small a change from the GB and the PS2 Slim is the exact same idea as XBone Slim.
Oliver Rodriguez
I'll just wait.
I waited to buy a PSP3 until after the new gen was here. Got a slim for $150 with a 250gb hdd. I also have a decent list of games that have good reviews to experience for the first time.
I'll never buy a console or game at launch ever again.
Jaxon Ross
Could this be the beginning of the end of console generations? Every few years, we get an incremental upgrade that's backwards compatible with everything up to the PS4/Xbox One, and new games will run on consoles that are up to like 5 years old, sort of like iOS apps. It'd also be nice if newer consoles could run older games at higher frame rates/resolutions.
Levi Thomas

>we are now seeing the repercussions, shorter generation. ? As far as I know, 360/PS3 outlived both the Wii and WiiU put together (FYI PS3 is literally getting more games in 2016 than the WiiU). I'm not so sure why you're trying to imply that MS and Sony are the ones getting their generations cut short.
You simply can't ignore the fact that we know PS4neo and PS4 are shared platforms, meaning same savefiles, same store, same online, same games. One doesn't cut the other short, if anything it extends the generation. Even with the new3DS came out with promises of exclusives and a lot of new feattures, it made no impact whatsoever. It had a Wii port and some (not all) games ran better on it. Heck, MH4U got the "new" improvement since it was close to the new3DS's release, but now MHX runs at 30fps on both 3DS and new3DS, the devs don't care anymore and don't even botehr optimizeing for each one, they just use the original model as the baseline.
Same will happen with the PS4neo. By the time it releases there will be 50m to 60m base PS4s on the market. Developers will never ignore that larger audience only to appeal to the 2m-5m PS4neo owners. Base PS4's growth will always be bigger than PS4neo's since it'll always be the cheapest option by a margin of at least $100
Either way both will play the same games to the end of time, it's a waste of our time to speculate or imply otherwise.
I would say the same about XboneScorpio, they are already hurting with a lower marketshare, it would be suicidal to abandon their current 20m market just for an incremental mid-gen change. But no one knows since there have been no further leaks. With PS4neo we KNOW it'll have an identical library to PS4, not one more game, not one less game.
Hunter Phillips

Yes, consoles are a solved platform. The only relevant advances made since the very first successful consoles was analogue sticks and online play. People like them because they are the best for what they do. Now the only thing left do to is keep the hardware specs up to date.
If a company wants to take a risk to break the mould, they do it on their own dime and they don't get to blame the consumer who was telling them EXACTLY what they wanted all along.

You actually have AMD to thank for this, it has nothing to do with competition between Sony and Microsoft. AMD is putting all their bets on Zen and ending in-house production of 28nm processors, if Sony and Microsoft were to stick with Jaguar cores they'd need to make a new deal with AMD their production costs would skyrocket, they actually save money by upgrading to Zen processors.
This isn't anything new though, Microsoft went through 8 major hardware revisions and 3 different GPU and CPU configurations throughout the Xbox 360's lifespan.

So this doesn't really bother me but I can understand people being upset. All the advantages of consoles are gone if this is the new model, from being able to instantly play your game to local multiplayer it's a thing of the past.
Parker Cox

>You actually have AMD to thank for this
What? Sony and Microsoft got exactly what they paid for from AMD because they didn't want to take a lose on console sales like last generation. Then they realized that they probably should have put more money into it after all. The PS4 Neo is still going to be Jaguar based.
>Microsoft went through 8 major hardware revisions and 3 different GPU and CPU configurations throughout the Xbox 360's lifespan.
All of which were die shrinks or cost saving features; the biggest being when they moved the GPU and CPU onto the same die, but the hardware remained the same in terms of how it performed.
