He was a friendly doctor who loved animals and helped develop the running shoes that make Sonic go fast. Sonic was a normal brown hedgehog at this point. While experimenting with the shoes Sonic loses control and destroys Kintobor's lab, spilling a substance on Kintobor, and turning Kintobor into Robotnik.

It always bugs me when people think they changed his name. I like "robotnik" better than "eggman" too but has never been anything but his nickname. The only thing that changes is the frequency with which they use one name over the other.

Sonic felt sort of OOC there in my opinion. It usually doesn't seem like he outright hates Eggman so much as see him as a game.
