How come people continue to suck Valves cock despite them not making a single game in the last 10 years, trying to monetize Skyrim mods, fucking up CSGO/Dota 2 trading and ignoring their franchises which make so much money?
How come people continue to suck Valves cock despite them not making a single game in the last 10 years...
Because like it or not, Steam saved PC gaming and brought it in the spotlight once more.
Because people became dependent on Valve after spending way too much money and tying their entire PC game library to a single online platform.
The consumerist fever dream doesn't allow anyone to let go. They'd have to trade their games for freedom.
Actually these anons covered it pretty well.

Mostly steam is just a really good digital distribution service. Nobody else is offering the convenience and library that steam does, and whatever you can't get on steam is on GOG.
You got 1000 steam games how about stfu, and 50 billion steam games on the store to check out. I'm trying to fucking buy some sick looking knives here you fucking autist.
-Gabe
I gotta give it to them for that, but they need to just never eat up another multiplayer indie project ever again.
1. I'm over the skyrim debacle. It was stupid. They admitted they were stupid. They stopped. Talk all you want about how they're totes gonna do it again guys. If it was EA or Blizzard they would have just done it anyway in spite of the negative response.
2. You have said that they don't make new games but also brought up CS:GO and Dota 2 in the same post. Ok user.
Valve never made a lot of games but they did make good ones. They still do but they aren't the games I wish they'd make. So there's no reason for me to hate them or love them. They are just there.
vidya rental disguised as "ownership"
Because left 4 dead, counter strike, and dota 2 are terrible, unpopular failures that have cost them nearly everything amirite
Only GOtards and Dotards worship Valve.
>muh skins
>muh eSports
>muh superior game
funny how all of those weren't original ideas from Valve.
>dota has been around since Starcraft, if not, earlier
>l4d by turtle rock
>CS literally started as a mod for HL1
nigger you literally said
>they need to just never eat up another multiplayer indie project ever again.
so I listed 3 indie multiplayer games they ate up.
Actually my biggest and only problem with Steam is them trying to monetize mods.
But I don't really care anyway, because won't monetize sex mods, so I'm free to enjoy my forever growing female-with-animal-genitals-based orgy on most moddable games.
>Steam saved PC gaming
>A digital download platform that does nothing special saved something that wasn't dying or in any risk of dying
>Gabenfags genuinely believe this shit
Literally angry with rage right now.
Kill yourselves.
You get unlimited access to a game for as long as steam exists at a pretty big discount for savvy shoppers, it doesn't make sense that steam would fuck you over like some cartoon villain user.
>savvy shoppers
Jesus christ gabe, let's not pretend this shit is rocket science
Anyone else already forgot about HL3?
It didn't "save" pc gaming and pc gaming was never in any sort of danger. However it did blow every digital download system out over time. When it started it was little better than direct2drive and that other alternative. But over time it became much better and now it is the absolute dominant digital download platform. And it does it without being extra sleezy to developers. They offer steam keys to sales from outside steam sometimes and no developer is required to only sell on Steam. That's a night and day difference between say, consoles.
I don't think it "saved" PC gaming, but it sure made it more accessible. Browsing categories, sales, suggestions, they all push the player to empty his wallet, and as his library grows, he's more tied to the platform, and so, his computer.
Also, it's a bit more practical.
Here's a retarded analogy to illustrate: Steam is a bit like Walmart: you can find a huge variety of goods in the same place. Without it, you'd have to spend hours a month to visit different shops to buy specific goods.
>as long as steam exists
Or you get your access revoked.
>some cartoon villain
It's a for-profit company, user. It is incapable of experiencing compassion or empathy.
Pc was dire don't even pretend otherwise. Nobody wanted to develop for it because of rampant piracy
???
If anything, the last 6 or so months have shown a clear turn of at least ambivalence against Valve from the general vidya groupthing. I mean yeah, you're always going to have your DOTA2, CSGO, and TF2 fans. But compared to 12 months ago those are just the usual fans doing their usual thing and generally an isolated audience. The Valve-is-god circle jerk has dissipated significantly because the literal truth of Valve's lack of presence in the medium is now having an effect. It's not really an awakening or revelation, it's just that they literally don't make anything other than content updates and monetisation shit for existing games and it's blatantly obvious by default of the norm.
Even if it was obvious to others 12 months ago was a weird transition period where some Valve diehards were hoping for that little extra something or more. Now the majority has just kinda accepted it is what it is. Even here I don't see Valve threads much, other than game-specific dedication. People by large have totally given up on Valve developing anything.
oh can you actually prove that?
excuse me. I'll wait.
Windows gamers still don't understand that building a new platform for PC gaming that can survive past the EOL date that is now less than 4 years away is a huge amount of work. Not everybody wants to be sitting in front of their machine running a 10+ year old OS crying about how much better DX11 games were back when Windows was the platform for games instead of Facebook/Microsoft's VR console.
If PC gaming is going to have a future, its going to have to be without Microsoft. Valve is the only company that might be able to give the PC a future, and they are barely equipped financially to make it happen.
>You have said that they don't make new games but also brought up CS:GO and Dota 2 in the same post
Too bad both CS:GO was released in 2012 and Dota 2 was released in 2011.
>B-but Dota 2 was released in 2013
Yes but it was in open beta for 2 years so it was essentially released in 2011.
My irl friends still think highly of Valve. I can't.
Full disclosure: I have 2700 hours in Dota 2. It's the game I've played the most, ever, and I play it almost everyday, at least a match with my friends.
Valve has really stopped doing all of those things that made us say "damn, these guys *care*! they're not like the rest of them!".
They've gone all out with monetizing everything, no longer giving free cool stuff for everyone, they have *zero* community communication (Blizzard of all people is shitting on them rn with Overwatch, their team actually communicates with players), introducing a ton of annoying, non-optional hurdles (Steam link filter, forced authenticator, everything in dota is untradable etc)
And fuck, they haven't made a game in ages. I love every Valve game, but they just don't seem interested in putting any out anymore. Dota 2 gives them a guaranteed 60 million/year from the International alone, imagine how much Steam gives them. They have zero incentive to actually make games that may or may not be profitable.
pretty sure he was referring to 'hasn't released any games in the past 10 years' when mentioning those games.
honestly I consider dota 2 as released in 2011 since it was very nearly done and its not the kind of game that ever stops getting content while it has lots of players. but as said, when Valve has both released multiple games in the last 5 years and is CONSTANTLY updating them with content then you can't really say they don't release games.
What you can say is they don't release the games you want. And I wholeheartedly agree. But I can't force Valve to do that.
>No longer giving free cool stuff for everyone,
If you pre-ordered any of the Steam Hardware last year they had a pretty awesome bundle that they gave you.
Yep, Gabe figured out that it's more profitable to become a middleman as a software distribution company.
>If you pre-ordered
CS was never a half life mod
>last 10 years
>episode 2, portal, portal 2, TF2, L4D 1 and 2, CS:GO, Dota 2
But I'm sure in your deluded shitposter world these games don't count because they didn't actually have to make them or some shit.
Damn, my reading comprehension sucks.
Well, I give them credit for updating their games, even if they fucked up sometimes (see: TF2's recent updates).
I admit I really get bitter at them sometimes for not continuing the saga that got me into gaming (Half-Life), but I admit you are right, they aren't forced to continue a series that they don't want to continue, or even to release any games.
how new?
It was hardware though.
Steam Link does just what it was advertised to do.
Steam Machines are just Linux PCs that boot to big picture.
The Steam Controller was the biggest unknown, but its an awesome thing to play PC games with. Especially ones that weren't designed to be played with a controller from a couch. As with most of what Valve has been up to the last few years you have to be using Linux to get the most out of it.
Not his job you fucking nigger cuck.
>makes claim
>not his job to back it up when challenged
keks
I'm pissed there's no HL3 too.
So you can pick some other easily sourced post and waste someones time? Fuck off redditnigger.
If it wasn't in dire trouble back then, its in dire trouble today. Windows as we know it has less than four years left before its killed off, and it could be as little as 18 months before new hardware can be used with classic Windows OSes. Already Microsoft has attempted to lock owners of newer video cards out of the full power of their GPUs unless they install spyware.
The fuck are you even saying anymore? There's like a million people just playing dota 2 right now.
>tfw love dota, but hate valve time
It's sucks to be a valvedrone
Any converted Valve fanboys here? I used to suck HL2's cock and praise them for their F2P monetization systems that were really consumer-friendly, but I'm starting to get fed up with their lack of communication and the fact that they don't actually fucking make anything anymore. There hasn't been a word on Half Life in something like 5 years, Dota 2 hasn't had a new hero in over a year, and with every update they break something and then completely ignore the community legitimately complaining about it.
The real question is why anyone keeps sucking Blizzcock even when they're worse than Valve.
The answer? Fanboys gonna fanboy.
My love of Dota is overpowered by Valve's lack of support and the downright garbage community it has.
For such a team oriented game where communication is important, apparently speaking the same language doesn't matter.
i'm a dotard but not a valvedrone
it's possible you know
Blizzard sucks but they are at least putting out games.
read
Did you watch the content from the last Dev Days? Valve did a really good job of explaining what they're working on, where they're going, and how they plan to get there. There's going to be another Dev Days in October, if you want to know what they're doing maybe you should plan to watch it.
kys newfriend, it was a stagnating market. Prices were skyrocketing yet nothing was on sale because it was a small market.
Dota 2 is literally getting Pitlord this week at the international man.
They added his portrait, his particles and a string about the front page announcement about Pitlord being added to the game.
It was obvious the moment Legion Commander got that comic of hers. But it's now really happening.
>inb4 only one hero per year lol valvecucks
Valve is not the one responsible for making heroes, Icefrog is. (Thank god for that too)
>so what valvecucks still one hero
Icefrog works on both Dota2 and DotA. And attempt to keeps them in parity.
He did say however that the moment Dota2 has all of DotA's heroes, he will cease development on DotA. Focusing entirely on Dota2.
That does mean a lot of new mechanics that weren't possible before thanks to DotA'a limitations will be now (slowly) implemented into Dota2.
can you write a short summary?
>No games
I'll pass.
>Dota 2 is literally getting Pitlord this week at the international man.
Yeah, after how fucking long?
Its a developer conference, Valve's games aren't really the topic of discussion but last time we got a bunch of information about Dota2 Reborn and the Vulkan update, and early screenshots of the new Left 4 Dead.
Then why the fuck was it posted in response to complaints about Valve not making games anymore?
>and early screenshots of the new Left 4 Dead.
It was a re-creation of a building from L4D2 to show off the new source engine. There's no L4D game in development. Dota 2 reborn was also broken as shit for weeks when it went live because beta versions and live for Valve games never fucking change. As evident by the Meat your Match update.
>VR meme fad
>hardware that killed THQ
>more jewery
>paid mods
the dream is dead
Because last dev days they did show games they were working on, but it wasn't specifically the subject of any of the talks.
Valve updates an older game to use a new engine and graphics API with new content
>Valve isn't making new games!
Valve releases a sequel to an older game using a new engine and graphics API with new content
>This should have just been an update for the old game!
Poor valve just can't win on Sup Forums. They must go through so many $100 bills wiping the tears from their face that Sup Forumse hate them. Right Sup Forumsros?
