Halo was an above average shooter. I enjoyed it, but there are many like it.

probably just the environment size
the ai types and weaponry were a bit meh

What was like it? System Shock? Doesn't come close. I can't think of anything that was like it at the time, or even now honestly. Not even later Halos are like it.

Not with that soundtrack.
Also Halo CE feels so adventurous due to the fact that it makes you feel like a badass on a alien planet alone and with an amazing soundtrack fueling your journey.

Such as? I'm serious here, give me some examples, I need more adventures like Halo.

The good levels in Halo CE had a nice balance of feeling big without being too big.

The "is it a good shooter" test

>Does the AI fight each other?

if yes, you have yourself a classic.

I like halo for the multiplayer but oh my fucking god I've hated all the single player campaigns they were just so boring, and the covenant are the most boring bad guys I've ever come across.

It ticks off several of those test requirements in my opinion.
>AI fights each other
>you can pick up enemy weapons
>you can kill anything, with any weapon
>comic relief support AI that are much weaker than you and need protecting
>sexy voice commenter instead of gruff marine
>vehicle physics

Fighting battles against an overwhelming alien army which is on the verge of destroying everything with a super weapon (that you happen to be fighting on) because they believe they're going to go to heaven by doing so. And at the same time you're this badass super soldier and the marines you fight with cheer when you show up and the enemy calls you a demon and flees in terror sometimes. And then halfway through zombie alien parasites come out of nowhere, and the reveal for said parasites was incredibly well done.

And the most important part was the direction of storytelling. It had cinematics, but it moved the plot forward only through Master Chief. It kept you engaged in his role.

It did everything right without getting too ahead of itself or crumbling under its own weight. It's just perfectly solid.

I know the series is mostly disliked here but the first 2 games were really something. It's a shame that other companies took the 2 weapons/ health regen and shoved it into everything imaginable.

because most games didn't come out when you were 8 years old

Also the AI was situationaly aware, they'd dodge you if you try running them over and the grunts would lose morale and break formation when you killed the elite in charge of them

You mean the whole trilogy was special

this
3 was way better than 2 and 2 is still great, bungie knew what they were doing
of course nowadays they're a joke

3 has flaws but it's my favorite because of the good times I had playing it.

>gaylofags are now old enough to post on Sup Forums
I guess it's finally time for me to tie the noose.

Yeah, I just watch a playthrough of Halo 5 since I was wondering if I should've picked it up. Its sad to see how cliche it is now.

the level design. two betrayals, assault on the control room, silent cartographer, keyes, guilty spark, the maw. it had memorable ass levels.

i couldn't pinpoint a single other game's level in the series. save for the overworld in ODST - which was awesome.

I'll bite

People who were 3 years old when Halo came out are old enough to post here

>replay Halo last week
>literally 80% of the entire game is copy pasted rooms and hallways

The single player campaign could have been benefited from being 4 times shorter. Seriously.

>the level design.

The level design in Halo is almost wholly uninteresting, filled to the brim with copy/pasted rooms and corridors.

groundbreaking and influential things have a tendency to become just like their copycats if they go on for long enough

2 was really fun but it was a fucking crazy rollercoaster. So many things were rumored and expected. So many unexpected things were added. But lots of cuts, lots of weird drawbacks to the story... stupid additions like brute plasma rifle and drones...

1-3 was the best time for Halo though, without a doubt. A big part of that was Bungie's engagement with the community.

Did you guys want the hallways in a ship to have different and unique dicks graffitied everywhere?

The worst offenders were Assault on the Control Room / Two Betrayals and The Library. The other levels were fine.

I want those hallways to be completely removed because it's literally just padding the same environment over and over. You could cut the game down by at least a third and lose nothing important.

thanks
you just reminded me to do my Library run before bed, today's not a High Charity day

At some point, now just hear me out, at some point don't you just have to accept that if you're going to fight inside a ship, you're going to get some repeating corridors due to it being a fucking ship?

Halo 1 definitely feels like a grand adventure. So it's unfortunate how poor the level design is. If you're after adventure FPS games, Unreal 1 is one of the top mother fuckers of all time. Fantastic soundtrack and art direction as you explore an unknown planet's dying civilization, and find out something sinister is brewing.

Did I strike a nerve? The Flood level has that stupid repeating bridge room and those stupid repeating quadrilateral corridors. The snow level has those repeating quadrilateral rooms as well.

It doesn't make for interesting level design you bootyblasted fanboy.

I know it is incredibly flawed but, Destiny, if you haven't played it yet, has SOME good things. Especially if you approach it with the understanding that it is Pathways into Darkness essentially told in reverse

Of course, but not every corridor has to be full of enemies. You can't excuse pacing because it's a building/vehicle. Plenty of other games have created more varied environments out of ships much smaller than what Halo canonically offers.

Oh, boy! More progressive themes just to show those kids how in touch with them you are.

I have played Destiny, it would be fucking amazing if it was actually good.

>The Guilty Spark 343 level

I was just playing 5's story yesterday. I got to this part and cringed so fucking hard.

I also hate that 4 and 5 don't have that feeling of being in battles against aliens. Prometheans are shit enemies. The new trilogy should have been focused on Bro-op where Chief helps Arby win his civil war.

Let's hope 2 is good. I mean, it is really close to being good... AI with more of a personality is my biggest request.

I have a couple of friends who were die-hard Halo fanboys, they even gave 4 a chance and tried to find things to enjoy.

5 was the game where they all rage-quit the Halo series.

It didn't help that we all felt personally insulted by the state of MCC when it came out.

Instead of doing that they had Donut Steel take Chief's place. Halo 6 better be just Chief and Blue Team.

I still can't comprehend how they botched MCC. It was such a great concept. It honestly would have been better if they had just released the three games separately

I also enjoyed the half life ripoff

5 has good multiplayer but shit campaign, its really astounding how opposite they are. Also the forge and customs shit on everything you remember from 3.

3/10, kinda replied.

...

I thought Elites were born in tubes

Its kind of fixed now, Ive been replaying it again for TL;DR reasons that boil down to muh cheevos, but now I notice I can matches regularly, but tons of people quit most of the time if they start to lose so it's still frustrating in some ways

Is it worth getting an Xbone for MCC? I have never played Halo before, but I am considering getting an Xbone S for MCC, Rare Replay, and eventually Forza Horizon 3 and Scalebound. Any other recommendations?

I don't think I'll be too interested in Scorpio because it will probably be too expensive if it's going to be targeting VR and 4k and upgrading to Win10 is out of the question

Actually I'd enjoy it if they pulled a Reach and let me play as my self insert fighting along with Blue Team. They seem to be pushing multiplayer as a training simulation for your Spartan IV but then you don't get to do anything with him. This also has an added benefit because the S4s would be a lot more tolerable if they were mostly silent protagonists.

Just upgrade you faggot

What are you, a tin-foiled freetard? In that case you shouldn't be getting an Xbone

I got my money worth soloing all the campaigns on legendary, yes you should get it

I've been playing it too but the botched start stifled the population it seems. It takes forever to find games in certain playlists.

If you absolutely do not want W10 or cant stand the W10 store, its a good alternative. Only reason I upgraded to the S is because I do own a 4K tv and the S does upscale games to 4K, plus practically 50% off for trading in old xbone. Maybe wait for the 1TB model or even the 500gb later this month to save where you can

Buddy, I like Halo, but are you trying to say System Shock compares unfavorably to it?

Halo's got a wonderful score, and really good AI which scales with difficulty. But fuck no, it's not as good as SS2.

Its way better than SS2 though

I don't mind having non important things being connected to the botnet. My PC has too many important things for me to do that to it. Please understand, Pajeet.

I also have a 4k TV, but I'm probably not going to watch 4k movies. I kind of want the 2TB model because I heard games can fill up the space fast.

Do you think it holds up for someone without nostalgia?

No one cares about your hentai collection

SS1 was supposed to have non-lethal weapons that only knocked enemies out, you were supposed to need to sleep and eat using the soda cans and food and fatigue system.

It never came to pass.

They shouldn't be compared because one game's strengths is the other's weaknesses, they're basically entirely different genres.

Deus Ex is not the best FPS of all time, for example.

Halo 5 mp is actually pretty good. You should check it out.

Both are good games but very different

>I kind of want the 2TB model because I heard games can fill up the space fast.

Oh they can, same as on PS4, its ridiculous how big games are these days especially with some games needing mandatory isntalls, on top of updates.

>that first time you played the demo in the gameshop

>some games needing mandatory isntalls
Don't all games on PS4 and X1 need to be installed? And doesn't MCC and H5 take up about 70 GB each?

too bad 343i is literally retarded and cannot add a proper file browser so now forge and customs are more ded than the Fallout 4 mod scene, and the multiplayer STILL has balancing issues where everyone uses pistol in arena and BR in Warzone because it's just better than most other choices

343 Guilty Spark was fucking intense.

youtube.com/watch?v=K7SyA-j4wxQ

Halo 5 takes up about 80+ GB because audio compression whats that

Not all, but most. and yeah, MCC and Halo 5 take hours.

There are profile and online site file browsers though, but yeah its not as good as bungies. Also balance is more an issue with plasma caster. Pistol is fine, AR still beats it close range. Warzone is such a clusterfuck that boisl down to good idea, bad execution.

Then again, that may as well be 343's approach to everything.

I wouldnt play past this cutscene when I was a kid. The flood scared the shit out of me back then. Still kind of do.

Shit are you me? I had to stop progressing at that point for like a week cause I was scared shitless. Kept playing the first 5 levels over again.

why would you compare those two?

I liked how the Covenant felt to be doing their own thing rather than sitting around and waiting for you to shoot them. Probably why the game stuck out so much from games like DOOM and Half Life is because the enemies acted so much differently in more ways than just "they flank you"

I wish more games today did this

flood Spartan IVs

you just know its gonna happen

I did the exact same too. I had Truth and Reconciliation down to a point. Would never let a marine die until I had to leave them behind.

vague responses are always correct.

You ever try to keep all the Marines alive at the last part of 343 Guilty Spark?

That shit is insanely difficult. So fragile and if one spore gets on them that's it.

The Spirit of Fire being infected with flood is pretty much a given, they will probably turn Cutter into a proto-gravemind and warp to earth with the entire crew infected.

Halo Wars 2 retcons that one comic pannel though

>he doesn't know

>

Because you were 5 when you played it

disgusting. 3 was a major disappointment even in the context of its own series. it was 1 step forewards and two steps back.

I think you mean Halo 2 which only had multiplayer to save itself at that time.

>literally hating the GOAT halo campaign
>literally hating one of the last, well kept secrets in gaming

What's wrong with Halo 2's campaign?

Let's see
>half levels
>shortest campaign in the trilogy when not played on Legendary
>only 7 playable levels
>Arbiter's levels were garbage
>shitty boss fights
>bullet sponge Brutes
>broken Flood
>AI downgraded from Halo 1
>pop in textures
>glitches out of the ass
>scripted as hell
>linear
>cliff hanger ending
>not ending the game as the Chief
>false advertisements with Chief in Arbiter's missions and the fight for Earth

>Why do so few games feel as exciting of an adventure as Halo CE did?

because you aren't 12 anymore

See

As scary as that scene was, what really got me on that level was when you tried to go back up the lift you entered in...

Swear to god when that burning wreckage came down and that music started playing I was ready to an hero then and there

>half levels
3 had cut content as well
>shortest campaign when not played on legendary
that's still 3
>Arbiter's levels were garbage
fucking LIES, arbiters levels get better over the campaign whiole chief's sort of fluctuate but start and end on good ones
>bullet sponge brutes
they die with a couple carbine headshots
>broken flood
Ok
>AI downgraded
Hardly
>pop in
Yeah, but fixed in H2A
>glitches out the ass
to be fair it was rehauled rushed and that it turned out so good was still amazing
>scrtipted
Yeah
>linear
silent cartographer is the only "open" level in CE
>cliff hanger ending
yeah
>not ending as chief
was planned but got cut
>flase advertisement
Then I guess MGS2 was false advertisement as well :^)

>half levels

Huh?

>shortest campaign in the trilogy when not played on Legendary

See pic.

>Only 7 playable levels
The Armory
Cairo Station
Outskirts
Metropolis
The Arbiter
Oracle
Delta Halo
Regret
Sacred Icon
Quarantine Zone
Gravemind
Uprising
High Charity
The Great Journey

>Arbiter's levels were garbage

How so?

>shitty boss fights

Were they?

>bullet sponge Brutes

They weren't much different than elites with shields. Bullet weapons and the brute launcher's blade made mincemeat of brutes.
>broken Flood
Huh?
>AI downgraded from Halo 1
Perhaps a bit
>Pop in textures
Yeah a bit.
>Glitches out of the ass
Were there?
>Scripted as hell
No more or less than any other game really.
>Linear
Why is this inherently a bad thing?
>Cliff hanger ending
Yeah.
>Not ending the game as the Chief
Oh you're one of those people
>false advertisements with Chief in Arbiter's missions and the fight for Earth
Yes everyone remembers this shit.

Halo 2 faggots everyone, THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T START A SERIES LATE!

???

And what this image is supposed to prove that your first Halo was CE?

Honestly Halo 2's online was pretty ass. People just liked it because it was Halo online. 3 had it's fault's as well but it mostly fixed the issues of 2's online. Reach was just practice for Destiny, 4 was garbage, and 5 improves the series for once.

No I just posted a Halo related image because I wanted to. I'm still waiting on your rebuttal while I do this.

You didn't start Halo with CE, that's why you have a warped understanding on why Halo 2's campaign sucked. Even Bungie admitted they fucked up with that campaign.

>Even Bungie admitted they fucked up with that campaign.

No one denies this. You'll notice in my post I typed: "Yes everyone remembers this shit."

And for the record I did start with CE. I just don't enjoy copy/paste level design.
