opposite force is on the same level of the main game, if not better.
blue shift is just ok, nothing more
You mean opposing force?
opposing force is better
Great game. It's a lot more face paced then modern shooters. A fairly big arsenal of weapons to fight with, and some of them have extra mechanics to help you.
Replaying expansions right now as a matter of fact.
Opposing forces is a must imo, but I haven't gotten around to blue shift.
Oposing force feels like a whole new game, blue shift feels like dlc.
yeah, misstyped as always.
as for the coop only one, decay, never played it, but there is a fan-made pc port, maybe i should try it one day
amazing game. still the best SP FPS on PC
One of the best FPSs ever created. Opposing Force is just as good, and some would argue even better. Blue Shift is alright, 5 or 6/10.
Bretty gud setpiece shooter. Don't expect to be blown away, since everything it did that was innovative has long since been copied and toyed with, but it's still very solid. Except be warned that the last few levels are far worse than the rest of the game. The ending feels relatively phoned in.
Opposing Force doesn't have the drop in quality, but there's something about it tonally that makes me like the original HL better. Still, it's very good.
Blue Shift is basically the first few levels of Half-Life but different.
No
It's a shame he plays on god mode I mean I get that picking up medkits constantly wouldn't make sense in the context of the ''story'' but Gordon is pratcically immortal in this series at least sometimes he should get hurt.
>blue shift is just ok
man, fuck Blue Shift. When I was a kid I got 50 bucks as a birthday present, and blew most of it buying that expansion pack expecting it to be on the same level as Opposing Force.
Instead it turned out to be like 1/4 the length.
hl2 is better
It's overrated af. Don't expect much and you might enjoy it for what it's worth.
A meme game favored by reddit
It is good.
No physics, so that might feel dated.
yes. name a better one then
COD 4
Not him, but quake 1 and 2 came before hl1 and are better shooters. HL1 started ruining the genre with its le cinematic experience.
guys, anybody up for playing decay in coop?
/thread
make it less obvious that you are a troll/retard next time. I almost expected a decent answer
There is no way Quake 2 is better than HL1. Quake 1 maybe. Pound for pound as shooters Quake 1 is pretty fucking great. But narrative wise, progression, atmosphere, HL1 wins a lot of people over. No level select pseudo menu, no silly narration about collecting a rune, just one unbroken adventure.
Unreal is better than all of them anyway.
...
Don't expect to feel the same way as people who are praising it here. I played it when it was first released. At the time it was a massive achievement and introduced mechanics to FPSes that were pretty amazing, and at the time it was probably one of the easiest games to recommend to anyone.
But people who say it's still as amazing as it was 18 years ago are looking through the haze of nostalgia. It simply is not as fun and incredible as it was 18 fucking years ago, now that we have an ocean of shit to choose from which has done or exceeded all of the tricks Half Life had in the 90s. It's the same thing as Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies - when that shit came out it terrified everyone. Looking back now those movies are jokes. There's no shame in that, I don't know why people get so butthurt by the idea that things lose impact over the course of decades.
Gordon Freeman, in the flesh or, rather, in the hazard suit.
Friday the 13th didn't terrify anyone people simply watched it for cheese factor.
Point to me an FPS released in the last decade that isn't F.E.A.R. that shapes up to Half-Life 1.
Yes.
Yes.
Try BlackMesa too.
HL2 and episodes after that.
That's Half Life Source though.
F.E.A.R. wasn't in the last decade fampai
Technically. It was released in the 360 in '06 and the PSTriple in '07.
Half Life 2, FEAR (which is off limits I guess), Bioshock 1, STALKER.
Each of those games when they came out were big deals. I don't like Bioshock that much anymore but at the time it was great, and same with a lot of those games.
I still think Half Life 1 was a great game, but for someone who has been playing FPSes for 10 years but has never played Half Life it's just not going to be the way it was in 1998.
the point isn't that half life is a bad game, it's that a game that was 10/10 in 1998 is not necessarily 10/10 in 2016
HL2 came out almost 12 years ago
Nah Black Mesa has bugged jump mechanics. Avoid like the plague.
I'm almost 29 and played these games in the late 90's and I don't agree with that. Half Life is still very enjoyable to this day, it aged way better than most games of the era like Shogo, SIN or Blood2.
Blackmesa despite some design flaws was a blast to play for me at least. The gameplay itself didn't take a single wrinkle, still very enjoyable.
Yes, and 1 was 18 years ago, and FEAR was 11 years ago, and Bioshock was 9 years ago. What's your point?
So it didn't qualify for the question
Bioshock and STALKER did though
>Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 has infinitely worse AI than HL1, and the Combine have horrible accuracy problems that the player doesn't. As a shooter it is far less intense than HL1 ever is except for the Entanglement section where Gordon has to set up turrets to defend a cell block. For the record I love HL2.
What's wrong with Bioshock? It's a great game as well. STALKER is a bug ridden mess that is strictly okay without mods.
Of course it's not going to be the way it was in 1998. We've got shit like Dishonored now which is amazing in its own right. That doesn't stop Half-Life 1 from being amazing as well. Next you'll say Doom isn't as good as it once was.
So you've named 4 games, well 3 considering HL2 is worse as a shooter. You had 10 years to work with and you picked 3 games. You're not helping your case when you say something like:
> now that we have an ocean of shit to choose from which has done or exceeded all of the tricks Half Life had in the 90s. It's the same thing as Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies - when that shit came out it terrified everyone. Looking back now those movies are jokes
>What should I expect?
My First FPS: PC Edition
>Are the expansions worth playing?
Fuck no.
You walk like there's fucking ice everywhere, the goddamn thing is so linear it might as well be an arcade lightgun shooter, it has a laughable "story" that it tries to hype so goddamn much as original but is basically a reimagining of the setting of Doom (think about it), the last part of the game is horrible platform jumping bullshit, and the last boss is so cringeworthy and fucking dumb that it ruins the entire game.
I'm glad 3 never came out because they would have fucked it up too and modern gamers would have still ate it up because they goddamn don't know any better.
1/10.
Half Life 2 isn't as good as Half Life.

It doesn't change my point that playing a game when it comes out and playing it 18 years later are two different experiences. Regardless of whether modern games are as good/better/worse than something from years ago, you can't tell me that if you gave some kid Half Life 1 today he's going to be as impressed as a kid in 1998 was.
You were a moron already as a kid
You're completely missing my point. I haven't said a single time that modern games are better than Half Life.
Someone who has never played Half Life is showing up in 2016 asking what to expect from a 1998 game. "BEST GAME EVER" in 1998 isn't the same thing almost two decades later.
That's it. My only point.
Yeah, that's about what I give HL1 also.
Not him, but considering I've just recently seen some literal kids try the very first Super Mario Bros game for the first time, and being totally hooked, I would not be surprised of anything anymore.
Not to mention the gameplay and style of HL1 are already very "modern"
>It doesn't change my point that playing a game when it comes out and playing it 18 years later are two different experiences
Water is wet what kind of statement is that? The only reason we're having a conversation is because you had this to say:
> now that we have an ocean of shit to choose from which has done or exceeded all of the tricks Half Life had in the 90s
And you named 3 fucking games. That's some ocean you've got there.
> he's going to be as impressed as a kid in 1998 was.
I played Quake for the first time a few months ago. I was blown away at how intuitive the level design was to combat and the clever enemy placement. Immediately it rose to one of my favorite games of all time.
>Someone who has never played Half Life is showing up in 2016 asking what to expect from a 1998 game
See everything I said above.
It wasn't good in 1998 either. The only people that played HL in 1998 that thought it was good were people that never played Doom, Quake, Unreal, and Duke3d.
Fucking overrated pile of trash. I could not believe that people actually enjoyed that crap then and I can't believe people still talk about it now.
Not him, but Bioshock is all atmosphere and story. Gameplay mechanics are bland and unfun as hell, so if you don't like that steampunk garbage and don't really care of story in a shooter you can't enjoy it. I fucking hated that game, I hated it even more that I actually bought it on release full price. I felt cheated by all the hype.
It holds up pretty well if you want fun gameplay and not scripted segments out the ass
Who is this fluid druid?
That's not the Joost, is it?
You asked for some examples of FPS in the last ten years that can hold a candle to Half Life and I gave a few. Metro and Dishonored are good, so is Portal 1/2. There's a few more.
You want an exhaustive list of every game that compares to Half Life within a specific generational time span then go write your detailed op ed on it, you clearly have some very bitter opinions on it.
Portal 1 and 2 aren't even the same kinds of games do you even know what you're talking about anymore? Metro and Dishonored are indeed good. Actually maybe not so much Metro.
There's nothing to be bitter about, jack. I just call out stupidity when I see it; there aren't a whole lot of FPSs released in the last 10, 12, 13, 14 years that are about a single unbroken adventure against aliens, military, in decrepit facilities. So when I tell OP he's gonna enjoy the shit out of it, I mean he's gonna enjoy the shit out of it. Bioshock is comparable, as is HL2. It sucks that HL2 is worse as a shooter. STALKER is cool though.
Enjoy your day babe.
>people are trying to copy hl's zeal and fucked up let's blame half life and not the shitty copy cats
Nice thinking user :^)
Pretty sure everyone who played HL in 1998 played all those other games mate, I certainly did and more. Final Doom, Duke3D and Quake came two mere years earlier and were still very popular games. Everyone back then was hyped at just how good Unreal looked, it was a must buy as well.
Mayne you should stop comment if you're just gonna pretend you are more than twenty year old.
Been thinking about replaying OF actually.
Maybe I'll do it now since I can't sleep.M8 I'm playing OF right now and it's a better FPS than 90% of the shit released on current year.
