10/10 game with a 10/10 OST

people get mad because it's not the sequel they wanted for CT

my first PS1 RPG

shit's awesome and so is Grobyc

Haven't played it. Should I?

Why does every JRPG just NEED to have some retarded-ass gimmick in its combat system?

>field colors
>element grids
>multi-attack shit

It's an alright RPG, but neither better than its predecessor norm up to par with the best RPGs on the PS1.

The game kinda falls under the weight of its own ambition. It couldn't juggle the 40 characters well, with both the writing and the gameplay suffering for it, and the plot is a mess because of how much crap it tried to shove in. The games more mechanically complex than Trigger but it's still just as absurdly easy, so you trade off the brisk pace of combat from Trigger for a system that rarely takes advantage of itself. Disc 2 outright feels unfinished, and I'm pretty sure it actually was since it reveals a lot of important stuff in text boxes right before the final boss rather than properly weaving it into the game.

Its presentation and music are amazing, and I do like a few of its characters. but it could desperately use a remake that cuts the bloat from the narrative, tightens up whatevers left of the plot and polishes the combat.

Should have included the radical dreamer's plot so the link between the two wouldnt have been so nebulous.

Its nice to have SOME variety, tooo much and shit gets really annoying.

I mean you must have some depth to battle, but if there's too much depth the player really needs to be eased into it.

I stopped playing CC because I thought the combat was shit.

The only thing I know about this game is that Time's Scar is GOAT and I havent even played the game and that apparently
the girl on the cover gets stabbed by the guy on the cover
I got so fucking mad by that spoiler that I've tried to avoid it until I ''forget'' because otherwise I'll be thinking about it and I'll always feel a bit disstressed about the characters.
Can someone ease me and tell me this is bullshit? I just want to be at ease and unbiased because I've listened to bits of the OST and seen some screenshots and the atmosphere looks amazing.

Also, I think I need to play Chrono Trigger first right?

it's a fantastic jrpg, but people get triggered by this game for some reason

Yes but play Chrono Trigger first if you haven't already.

Cross is one of the greatest JRPGS ever created you silly goof, why the fuck haven't you played it yet

I want this and Trigger on Steam so bad

Not as good as Chrono Trigger. I've attempted to play through it twice now, and both times I've lost all interest right at the swamp area.

Better than Trigger, but not as good story-wise as Radical Dreamers.

JRPG were the random battles are completely worthless

It's retarded to make the core gameplay a detriment

An amazing game, but a lot of people will never forgive it for not being CT2.

Can be slow at times and there's some stuff that's annoying, like so many meaningless party members, but all in all it's a great experience, great story and a fucking amazing OST, easy 5/5 star games.

The stabbing isn't what you think it is. I'll leave it at that.

Yes play Trigger first. It's a must. If you haven't played either of these games yet I don't know what the actual fuck you're doing with your life.

Good story
best vidya music of all time
Utter dogshit gameplay that is slow and uninteresting.

I suggest you play Cross first and Trigger later. You'll still get the overall story. Also, about the spoiler you mentioned, it happens about 1 hour in. Don't worry about it.

I mean, what you prefer, some generic character progression system where you simply level character X to level Y to learn ability Z? Cause that's really stale and boring.

>the girl on the cover gets stabbed by the guy on the cover
This is literally the first thing you see in the game
It happens before the tutorial

Video games were satanism enablers.

Intro was amazing. Hare is amazing. Lynx is amazing. Miguel is a cunt.

Alright guys, you've definitely eased me, I thought it was some endgame stuff so I was sad.
I'll play Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, I've been getting into JRPG lately and videogames in general and so far my favorite RPG is FFIX.

Also, why Chrono Cross first?
I understand that some people wanted a sequel to Trigger but I wont have that mindset, is there any reason besides that?

CT has aged like wine, CC has some mechanics that are just a tad annoying for current standard.

Also you will be able to appreciate both games better if you play them in that order, story/lore wise

Different user here, honestly, considering how you're trying to evade spoilers you're better off getting the hell out of this thread as soon as you can.

Fly, you fool.

everything involving lynx was garbage. Rest of the game is 10/10

You see that thing happen in the intro of the game.

Alright thanks, I'll keep that in mind.
Now that you said this they are for sure coming, I'm out.

>Also, why Chrono Cross first?
Because of a bunch of PS1 babies get their panties in a bunch when Trigger accuse Cross of utterly shitting on its story (which it did). If you play the latter first, you're likely to appreciate the game more since you won't have sky high expectations for it like you would it you played Trigger first.

Don't listen to this user
Literally the dumbest advice ever. You won't know anything about why everything is happening. Every single thing that happens in Cross is a direct result of what you did in Trigger. Only retards are unable to understand the connections between the two games.

You won't even be able to appreciate the best sequence in the game unless you've played Trigger.

Do yourself a favor and DON'T visit Chrono threads until you finish both games.

>mfw I figured out Miguel was Chrono

it's a mess of a plot that shits all over Trigger

>my favorite RPG is FFIX.

Mi negro.

>I understand that some people wanted a sequel to Trigger but I wont have that mindset, is there any reason besides that?

No other reason besides that. I played Cross first and I enjoyed it. Then I played Trigger, years later and loved it. I understood then why some people were dissapointed with it's sequel but even then, Cross is a really good game. Quite comfy, too. You are in for a treat, user.

>insulting one of the best character designs in the Playstation era
user I'm going to stab you through the Internet

None. Ignore the other anons and play Trigger first.
It's both a fucking excellent game in its own right and Cross is actually very dependent on it.

You can figure out whats happening in Cross' second half without playing Trigger but made with the intention you're familiar with these characters and world. Its constantly namedropping things from the previous game and the entire final act is about the events of Trigger.

The reason people say Cross isn't really a true sequel is because the gameplay, tone, setting and art direction are pretty noticeably distanced from Trigger, and because the first half of the game is focused on subplots that have little to do with the overarching story. But it's still a direct sequel story-wise despite that.

He's not
Crono died during the Porre invasion of Guardia.

>a cat guy with a cape, a long skirt and a really awkward hat
>best character designs

holy shit user

AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT.

Best game in the series, coming through.

I don't. If they port CT to Steam, it's going to be the shitty mobile port because Sqeenix is a bunch of cheap cunts.

There's always one idiot in a Chrono Cross thread who can't read between the lines.

The plot was dick and the sheer amount of characters was retarded, but the gameplay was great and that's all that matters.

You know what would be cool?

A remake of CC with a decent combat system on PC/PS4/XBONE.

Man oh man this game has so much potential, if SQE are remaking games like FF7 I don't see how they can't remake CC.

just don't make it another retarded action rpg pls ;__;

Great game

Miguel took forever for me to beat.

Only thing that I didn't like was there was to many playable characters. Was more of a gimmick than anything.

It's over user.
Our kingdom has fallen. Let it go.

The combat in Cross is so mind numbingly irritating. The fights take so long to load, just to use two attacks, which have long animations, then load back into the game. And then there's so much fucking menu time, with the menus being shit. Swapping out spells is the most tedious shit ever. I don't know how that kind of system ever got approved. And then add a result all this, combat is a joke and is horrendously unbalance. I really wanted to like this game, and it had some cool ideas, but man did it take it's mistakes way too fucking far.

One of my favorite games of all time. Best OST period.

>badass skilled swordsman, a literal genius, and a turbo qt princess
>the only 3 people alive in the time period who can wield ridiculously powerful magic
>crono and marle killed by some normal ass porre soldiers
>lucca killed by a cat man and a clown

To this day I refuse to believe it went down like that. There's just no fucking way. Crono could've decimated a whole army on his own and Lucca should have no trouble defending herself against Lynx and Harle. Especially if they were backed up by Frog, Ayla, and Robo, which they probably were somehow because there are drawings of them in the orphanage.

Even if Porre was led by Dalton. We've kicked his ass before.

They have nothing in common. They don't even have the same fucking hair color in the scene he shares with Crono's ghost child.

You're missing the whole point of Miguel's character if you think he's Crono in disguise who randomly changed his named and moved to El Nido so he can be a village fisherman and raise a family. When at the same time everything in the game implies that the whole cast of Chrono Trigger is dead.

Hey guys

Those weren't just your typical porre soldiers. They were using those magic tablets which are now widely available by the time Chrono Cross takes place.

The best final fantasy

>turn black
>holydragsword

PANIC

An incalculable number of things can happen during war, user. It doesn't matter if you win a million battles, because you only need to lose once, for whatever reason it may be.

>Frog, Ayla and Robo
Doesn't the ending of Trigger states that with Lavos gone time gates would close permanently? That would make visitation rather hard.

epoch

Miguel will fuck with you hard the first time you fight him but as soon as you learn his gimmick he's really not hard at all.
Just change his attribute to something else, bring in party members who aren't black elementals and keep the field a different color at all times.

>That would make visitation rather hard.
Not for someone like Lucca I'm sure.

>bring in party members who aren't black elementals
>you are black
>Harle is black
Yes this is absolutely and option for the fight.

Harle isn't needed during that battle at all.
I used Radius and Norris and it was fucking easy.

Good games that got shit on by people who couldn't handle it being a sequel to their beloved game.
You'll find that happens a lot in videogames.

Cross battle system is simple and grid is fun to customize. You can learn everything about battles in the first hour or so.

Less is more.

I'm more pissed about people who bitch about Cross being disrespectful to Trigger when it's obvious they didn't either finish the game or don't understand the ending.

It's a garbage JRPG with zero character development in its nonsensical story and a battle system that literally allows the enemies to cheat in order to make the game less babby-tier, which doesn't even work anyway.

Chrono Cross is easily one of the worst things Squaresoft was ever involved with, no wonder the series died after this trainwreck.

Amazing ost
great graphics
good battle system
lul whut story

>hey, why this guy is spamming weakminded it doesnt w-

underwhelming sequel, terrible combat...
It shattered my childhood dreams and expectations

If at least the battle system wasn't as bad, I'd have completed it by now, but holy shit every time I try to play it I'm reminded how slow and boring that combat system is.

Why is she so perfect?

Because french Harlequin waifus are in ridiculously short supply

It has lower lows than Trigger but also higher highs in my opinion.

I wasn't too amazed by the OST at first but now it's my favorite in all of vidya. Combined god tier art, it has a fantastic atmosphere too.

I think it has a better story than trigger, but the presentation is awful and 70% of it is shat out at the end.

Posting most underrated track: youtube.com/watch?v=QsTezaWM2BY

Vidya does need more harlequin waifus

Also, Kid a shit

Love it. I like it a lot more than Trigger honestly.

It has the worst battle theme I've ever heard in any J-RPG.

Oh boy here we go again...

I don't know if it's underrated or not, but the dwarven theme has stuck with me over the years
youtu.be/yXevGJoFTBM
Chrono Cross dwarves are probably the biggest bastards in dwarven history.

Why do people say if you haven't played Trigger you'll be lost on Cross? I played Cross first, and understood it fine. I didn't even know Trigger existed before I played it, as I got it in 2001 as a B-day present.

I like the tune that plays during the fight. It really gets your blood pumping and your mind straight into the zone.

>tfw I finally found the polygon model of barefoot Kid

My childhood prayers have been answered.

I too played Cross first, and while I more or less understood what the game was trying to convey well enough, quite a few plot elements will ring hollow without knowledge of Trigger.

The whole Dinopolis/Chronopolis conflict, for instance, or the significance of the Dead Sea.

I actually quite like Cross. I believe the themes it explores, of abandoned worlds and realities undone, are a nice complement to the first game's reckless tampering with time, so to speak.

>and then they went and made SFM porn of it

It's okay, I don't hate it or anything.

fuck you ace

I haven't played Cross in awhile. What was the Dead Sea?

The future ruined by Lavos.

Hi, Just when I least expected you.

I tried replaying it the other day. I forgot how bad load times were back then.

Also the constant forced environmental messages get old very quickly.

Basically this.
It's a recreation in glorious 32-bit graphics of the future that the party in Trigger tried so hard to kill. If you have no knowledge of Trigger it'll be just another area, while someone familiar with it will find its presence in the game just jarring.

You know what's really bizarre?

Some of the old fansites I visited as a kid are somehow still up.

You know, for a game with such great soundtrack, and for such a meaningful character, Fate's theme is kind of garbage.

Especially when compared to that of the Dragon God
youtu.be/wkaf76BuHkw
youtu.be/ehGz2UASqtI

>while someone familiar with it will find its presence in the game just jarring.

>johnny's corpse when you fight the robot

This and Brave Fencer Musashi's OST are two of my favorite pieces of music of all time.

Had the luck to stumble on both when I went to Japan. They're just so goddamn excellent I had to buy them

You do spend a lot of time in the swamp. And Viper Manor. And fucking Zelbess. Basically, the game has 3 settings and they're all shit.

Which ones? All the ones I try to visit now are gone

>Brave Fencer Musashi's OST
YOU AND ME ARE BEST FRIENDS NOW

The retarded thing about Chrono Cross is, they allude to Porre being victorious through their dumb alternate timeline bullshit.

Chrono Cross's plot is as dumb as it is incomprehensible.

What kind of dragon is this?

A good one.

One you fuck
