The first console to enable true 4K gaming and high quality VR

>the first console to enable true 4K gaming and high quality VR
>most powerful console ever
>it's a monster

How big is this thing gonna be? Is this the return of Hueg?

See that mountain?
It's your console.

It is going to be a computer tower.
Because it is a Pre-made computer like the Steam boxes. But for Windows 10 games only.

It's basically going to be a quadcore version of Zen w/ R9 570X w/ 8GB of HBM2 and 8GB of 2400MHZ DDR4.

Literally a high-end gaming PC of 2016, running a custom version of Windows 10 optimized for DX12.

It's going to fail. A fuckhuge box that comes along with a fuckhuge price that doesn't fix what people dont like about the bone

It's going to make sonyggers cry tho. Neogaf will literally suicide once they see scorpio and PS4 Pro versions run side by side

It probably will be the same size of the original Xbone but that'll probably be for the same reason as the PS4 Pro, where the disc drive and the board are on different "levels" rather than sharing the same space.

...

>fail unlikely

Most devs will still take a Sony like approach to the Scorpio, render the game at 1800p and use a custom upscaling solution to hit 4K and use the extra 1.8TFLOPs available over the PS4 Pro that the Scorpio will have on tap with a much stronger CPU, to push the fidelity further and sell their games on graphics.

>It's going to make sonyggers cry tho
Cry "599 US DOLLARS" again, that's for sure

Part of the $599 meme was because the PS3 actually managed to run games worse than the 360

Try 699 or 799

>Run games worse
>360 couldn't handle native 720p at 60fps where PS3 could
???

>custom version of Windows 10 optimized for DX12
This makes no fucking sense.

>How big is this thing gonna be? Is this the return of Hueg?
It will be superHUEG and dwarf the OG XBOX.

It's all going to come down to cost to whether this thing sells or not.

If they go the Steam Machine route and they're all like 600 fucking dollars and up you can call this thing DOA. 400 dollars is the sweet spot for console hardware selling. Anything more and you're narrowing your audience by a huge margin.

...

When are console makers gonna stop putting APUs in their shit and end this "smaller is better" meme?

We already have steam machines and those already have 4k.

APUs are the best way to make cheap consoles. It's not going away.

I miss the old Xbox hueg threads.

PS5 will be 2019, Scorpio only has two years to itself at the arseend of this generation

Scorpio shouod have launched this year

You can't announce something cutting edge in May 2016 then not release it until November 2017

Please refrain from using old pictures on Sup Forums.

It's probably going to be an Xbone with a 1070 in it for 500 bucks. It's a shame that Microsoft already announced that all their exclusives will come to PC from now on or I might've been tempted to get it.

>most powerful console ever
>its just a pc with an ugly case

>PS5 will be 2019

lmao the delusion of sonyggers never fails to amuse me.

>PS5 comes out in 2019, 3 years after PS4 Pro
>Scorpio 2 comes out in 2020, 3 years after Scorpio 1
>PS5 Pro comes out in 2022, 3 years after PS5
>Scorpio 3 comes out in 2023, 3 years after Scorpio 2

you now realize how retarded sony is

>He thinks this generation is going to last longer than 6 years again

What is the Scorpio supposed to be though?

Is it like the next Xbox? Or is it more supplementary like the PS4 Pro? Cerny has already come forward and said their plan is to launch a PSV in the coming couple of years. The Pro is just for people who wanted a slightly more powerful PS4 more ready for VR.

The Scorpio is a mystery to me.

The rumour is that it'll be more like a PC. That you can just replace parts (or the whole system if you want) every so often and support all the old games for it too. Wouldn't put it past microsoft either, they did get away with charging $100 for 60GB hard drive's back in the day and kids bought into it. imagine telling a child he can get a new graphics card for $300 instead of buying a new console completely?

>He thinks this generation is going to last longer than 6 years again
Sony goes for ten years, don't they?

That makes sense actually. Basically steal Valve's idea completely and sell overpriced parts for it. Third-party parts not allowed.

It's an iterative console and an end for console generations for Xbox. From here on out there will be a new xbox every 3 years that will be fully compatible with all the previous games.

The PS4 Pro is supposed to be a mid gen refresh for sony. That means they are releasing a pro version of their consoles at the mid of every gen so also 3 years apart. Sony will release a full PS5 in 3 years and MS will release another iteration of Xbox which will probably be more powerful than the PS5 still.

...

It has literally no games so no

This makes more sense though. In the realm of this idea you have the problem of that mobo getting older and older and failure happening rather quickly and that's something Microsoft dances around as much as possible.

The size of the Xbone was hilariously big just because they were that cautious. Introducing outside parts is a bit much. Could get them in hot water all over again.

PS3 lasted for 7 years, it was Microsoft who artificially lengthened last generation by starting in 2005 and ending in 2013 and Microsoft still released first party games for the 360 until 2015.

>Microsoft still released first party games for the 360 until 2015.

I don't blame them. Nobody was buying the Xbone. Might as well milk the install base you have for as long as possible.

Yeah, the hardware could get old; in which case you artificially restrict the new parts you can use after a certain amount of time. It might seem a bit complicated but it's doable. I think they'd rather that than force someone to feel like they have to buy a new console every 3 years. Instead, buy new parts every 3 years and a new system every 6 or something.

Microsoft caught wind of the PS Neo plan and wanted in on it

Possibly ATI pitched it to Microsoft, anyway everyone in the industry knows when a player is planning a big move

Microsoft opted for power and a later release

Sony opted for pragmatism, releasing exactly mid-gen and embracing checkerboarding/upscaling

I strongly feel Sony has the better timing. Scorpio has to keep touch with 2013 Xbone, the power differential is wider than PS4 4/4.5

>Microsoft caught wind of the PS Neo plan and wanted in on it
This is wrong you retard. They were planning iterative consoles from the very beginning. The entire Xbox one OS was designed with the idea of iterating on the hardware.

Xbox ain't got no games

nobody wants to play gaylo 10 or gears of war

It's clear that Xbox is becoming more and more PC like.
While being avoided by the core audience for exactly this reason.
Microsoft has to understand, that normal people don't want PCs anymore. Not for gaming, and not for anything else.

It is a trans-PC. Wrapped up in a shitty plastic, unopenable case, none of it will be modular and it'll still pretend to be a console.

The argument for consoles being 'cheap' is no longer valid. The lines between PC and console are getting so blurred that new consoles will just be a more restrictive pre-builts, except worse value and performance.

Why do people hate computers so much?

People hate desktops and toying with shit generally.

It's why car enthusiasts aren't the norm. Most people don't like fucking with their cars. They take them to other people to do that since they're scared they'll fuck something up.

The laptop market is still vibrant for this very reason. Desktops will stay around forever but only for that enthusiast group who wants to have power but saving money in the long run.

>Why do people hate computers so much?
Because they are a fucking chore to maintain. Especially the ones with a Microsoft OS on them.
Even I look forward to get rid of PCs and I'm using them since 1993.

>How big is this thing gonna be? Is this the return of Hueg?
Pretty big, the PS4 Pro is already larger than the launch PS4 and it's substantially weaker than the Scorpio is expected to be. Scorpio also won't have a die shrink so I'd imagine it launches with a 400W power supply.

>chore to maintain

They're really not though. I built my desktop in 2012 and the only thing I've replaced is the hard drive and the video card. It's not hard when you don't have bleeding edge standards.

While I have an old Phenom I could see if I had made a better planned build an i5 2500k still runs far stronger and could last another 4 years but I'll have to replace my whole system in the next two. 6 years ain't bad though.

This. Especially without a die-shrink. I'd say the same size as the original Xbone. That should give adequate flow.

I think he means how Windows 10 has a bunch of bloat and processes running in the background. Scorpio would basically be Windows 10 but with less OS overhead since the console CPU's probably can't handle desktop Windows.

SoC is the future whether we like it or not. AMD and Intel are investing more and more into x86 APUs and Nvidia is all in on ARM.

>I'd say the same size as the original Xbone. That should give adequate flow.
Yeah, this is what I expect. Original Xbone size but with more aggressive fan speeds.

...

> first console to enable true 4K gaming and high quality VR

you mean like a computer?

>chore to maintain
>They're really not though. I built my desktop in 2012 and the only thing I've replaced is the hard drive and the video card
You confused repairs/upgrades with maintenance.

At first I tought the Scorpio was just supposed to be an upgraded Xbone like the PS4 Pro, but now it seems like they want to make a Steam Machine running Windows. Makes sense Spencer would want to distance Xbox from the Xbone since the name is poison thanks to Mattrick. Still the Xbone having forwards compatibility will limit their future potential.

The PS3 was much harder to program for because of The Cell. It's why multiplats like Bayonetta and Red Dead ran like trash on the PS3. First party devs like Naughty Dog could achieve great things but 3rd party devs choose the path of least resistance, which happened to be the 360. This is why both the Xbone and PS4 are x86 AMD, it means you can port games incredibly easily.

That's literally a Silverstone case, you can look up the size online

The Rx 490 is coming out like 9 months after the 1070, it will have to be dirt cheap in order to compete. If the Scorpio is using a downclocked 490 it could get away with being $450 on launch considering Sony used a downclocked 470 at $400.

What maintenance then? Literally what are you talking about? You mean that time two years ago where I blew some canned air into it? It didn't even need it.

I'm still on the same install of Windows 7. My PC might as well be a console.

How are steam machines? I mean is steam OS getting more games? Or any games like COD/battlefield?

I'm really hoping they get better so we can pressure MS and Sony to go the free route with multiplayer.

Well huh, building a Scorpio-killer PC is actually pretty difficult, although I imagine 1070/490 prices will be a lot lower by the end of next year.

There was a patent by Microsoft which was literally this.

Well we got Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
Though I don't think that Sony and Microsoft are going to do shit for us since the exclusive content route probably makes more money.

EA doesn't have any Linux support, which is odd since they usually have Mac support. Activision hates PC so they don't have any Linux games since they barely support their Windows ones, supposedly you can play Blizzard stuff in WINE but I've heard rumors of bans so I'm not sure. Square Enix and Capcom have been porting to Linux though.

Yeah I don't understand it either. I suppose you could call it maintenance if you are a retard and frequently get viruses. I haven't ever had any issues with viruses. I don't pirate games or use my PC for porn.

I do. I also do it on my tablets and phones.

Viruses aren't really a thing anymore in the days of constant updates. The piracy scene really doesn't do it much anymore either. The last heyday was the bitcoin miner days.

The last time I found out I had viruses was using peer to peer shit on Vista in 2007.

>using Nvidia prices

They're just going to have an AMD 490 APU kind of equivalent. Nvidia can't compete at the cheap market of APUs. That's why they're trying their game at mobile with the Switch.

Microsoft literally said in an interview it's likely going to be the price of a mid range computer 700-800

>What maintenance then?
Installing and updating operating system, applications and drivers, make games work and fix security problems, creating and maintaining backups. Defend omnipresent security threats. Clean up disks from garbage PC games leave behind aka uninstall malware.
We all know you enjoy those tasks, because you are a mustard. But most people don't give a fuck about your personal computing model train and love phones, tablets, Chromebooks and game consoles, because they are pretty much maintenance-free.

By the end of next year there will be Zen/Vega SOC chips available on the open market. Building a system that will kill what will inevitably turn out to be an underwhelming console built around budget hardware will become easy.

fpbp

>Microsoft literally said in an interview it's likely going to be the price of a mid range computer 700-800
Let's make a prediction:
PC games aka Windows games will be released on Microsoft Scorpio as standardized reference platform for "gaming PC". Just like the IBM PC was before.
PC mustards will happily go and buy a Microsoft Scorpio and then start to defend it.
>Scorpio Master Race
Nobody else will give a fuck and stick with Playstation.
Scorpio will simply replace PC gaming desktops, chink manufacturers exit the market and go full phone/tablet/laptop. Third worlders sitting on outdated chink toasters will get mad, because they can't afford Scorpio.

that makes sense considering they made everything windows 10...it's just gonna be a prebuilt pc

SteamOS picked up over 1000 new games this year. The pace hasn't really changed and the total percentage of titles continues to hang right around 25% of the entire Steam library. Arma 3 and CS GO are the biggest modern military shooters I'm aware of that you can play on it but I don't really pay much attention to that genre.

The drivers have really improved as well. I picked up Saint's Row 4 a while back when it was on sale and the frame rates on my AMD card were downright unplayable. Tried it out again following upgrading to the latest driver though and on the same card I can max the settings without any framerate drops.

I can see that happening. Going forward there really isn't much of a way for them to continue making money selling an OS. Dedicated UNIX based devices are getting too cheap and most people just don't need a desktop anymore.

They could easily take the bargain basement hardware in the One and make a line of dirt cheap business PCs and price the OEM licenses Dell and other manufacturers in that space have to buy to be just enough that they won't be able to compete. There's no way that anything bad would happen to them from doing that now.

Can't wait to play Knack on it

>Scorpio will simply replace PC gaming desktops
That's simply not going to happen.

There's no indication at all that MS will allow running Win32 applications on Scorpio, full support for Win10 UWP is still far away, half the user base won't move from windows 7

You're just baiting me into bumping this thread so I'll give it to you since it's a decent thread.
It's no different than a console. It's the same shit. They're one in the same.

When I open up my console and have to install gigabites of updates it's the same.

Yeah, this is Microsoft's plan to save the PC along with the Surface line. I saw this a mile away, although seeing the results is interesting and pretty cool. The smart people will just buy a desktop though.

I don't know what Sony's going to do, but I'm sure they'll just make bigger consoles and ramp up their Vue service.

Nintendo will likely abandon the home market entirely (unless it's still making them money somehow) and just make mobile platforms and mobile apps until Pokemon Go Plus Pro comes out on Google Glass 2.

Hueg

And I forgot the best of it: Scorpio mustards will pay for online multiplayer. Because Microsoft will leave them no other choice.

Microsoft is killing off Win32 as fast as they can, there's no way they'll allow it on the Xbox and the day when they don't really work on Windows is on its way. Don't think corporate environments will save you from this either, they'll have the tools to package and distribute custom software internally.

Plus staying on Windows 7 for gaming long term is going to be very difficult when you won't be able to use any hardware released after 2016. The only real option for PC gaming as we know it now to survive is for it to switch off of Windows.

Unfortunately Valve thought they had 4+ years, and they've been as cautious and slow moving as ever. Microsoft could easily catch them off guard restrict their access to the market and drive PC gaming as we know it into a dark age just like the one after they launched the original X-box.

Will the Scorpio have exclusive games, are they killing the Xbone with it, as in a new generation, or will it be like Sony's deal with PS4 and Pro? Since Sony announced there will be no Pro exclusives

>Plus staying on Windows 7 for gaming long term is going to be very difficult when you won't be able to use any hardware released after 2016.
That's correct. My PC is frozen at 2011 specs and won't see any new games. (Win64-)PC is an officially deprecated legacy platform and I'm going to phase it out until 2020.
>Unfortunately Valve thought they had 4+ years
Valve is in bed with Microsoft again, the SteamOS fad is going to die. Steamcucks are most likely getting forced into Scorpio some way or another.

Microsoft's goal with the entire Windows 10 line seems to be forcing the platform into the same kind of upgrade treadmill that the mobile market has.

So expect that there will be no exclusives until suddenly there are and you're stuck buying their new system. I fully expect Sony to pull this same shit.

>Microsoft is killing off Win32 as fast as they can
That's a lie though, there's a reason they enabled win32 emulation on ARM devices, killing backwards compatibility would be a suicidal move by MS, magnified by the fact that UWP is still massively unpopular

>Microsoft could easily catch them off guard restrict their access to the market and drive PC gaming as we know it into a dark age
Microsoft's foothold in the PC Market is minimal, any kind of intent to block a specific client would be idiotic and easily circumvented, not to mention, prone to anti-monopoly lawsuits

its ok if you want to joke about it. I expect a lot of tears next year when people running 7 buy Ryzen CPUs, 580s, 1180s, etc and realize that they aren't working.

>Valve is in bed with Microsoft again, the SteamOS fad is going to die. Steamcucks are most likely getting forced into Scorpio some way or another.
You think people are going to give up their PCs in favor of some shitty Microsoft console? Or that Valve would be okay with sharing their revenue with microsoft?

no chance in hell

>easily circumvented
But by how much of the market? Microsoft aren't going to care much if 1-2% jailbreak their device if it lets them capture 98% of the market.

>prone to anti-monopoly lawsuits
Its cute that you think this will be any deterrent at all for the next four years.

>That's a lie though, there's a reason they enabled win32 emulation on ARM devices, killing backwards compatibility would be a suicidal move by MS
I was under the impression that it wasn't simply a general compatibility mode but that the apps still had to be specifically repackaged for it. Basically the same way that win32 support in UWP already worked.

it's pretty fuckin' gay.

>You think people are going to give up their PCs in favor of some shitty Microsoft console?
They will left no other choice.
>Or that Valve would be okay with sharing their revenue with microsoft?
Yes, Gaben had a problem with Ballmer, which is where SteamOS came from, but is best friends with Nadella, they will both fuck PC mustards in the ass like no tomorrow.

kekles

what about win8?

>its ok if you want to joke about it. I expect a lot of tears next year when people running 7 buy Ryzen CPUs, 580s, 1180s, etc and realize that they aren't working.
I'm serious, when I say my PC is frozen at 2011 specs and going to be phased out.
I don't care at all about RYZEN, GTX 1180 or ported AAA garbage and won't waste a single penny on it.
Because it's worth as much as investing into the Commodore Amiga platform in 1994.
It has been a nice 15 years ride, followed by not so nice 8 years and now it's time to close that chapter.

Or what will happen? You're forgetting the consumers dictate what happens and not Microsoft.

Win 10 adoption is far from what they want, and you know this is true because even a Win 10 exclusive game such as Quamtum Break now can be played on Win 7. They wouldn't do that if that shit was flying off the shelves.

You're also forgetting Valve already got shitloads of backlash against paid mods, you think they can close shop on Steam, try to force users to switch to Win 10/Scorpio and get away with it? Even if they did such draconian move, you think people would want to keep doing business with Valve?

That's great. I still think pc is way superior but it's a win win for Linux and console players.

But what games are worth playing on this?

>But by how much of the market?
Depends on which market, mobile users won't give a shit of course, PC gamers, the theoretical target audience for the scorpio, on the other hand will not accept such move, it would be the GFWL fiasco all over again.

>Its cute that you think this will be any deterrent at all for the next four years.
It will be, at least until the EU explodes

>... Basically the same way that win32 support in UWP already worked.
There aren't much details out there, only the mention that the exes work trough emulation.
Funny thing, it's easier for MS to emulate x86 applications on ARM, that moving both devs and users to UWP
