What order should I play the Metal Gear games in? I was thinking I should start with MGS3 since it's the first in the series chronologically, but I'm not a hundred percent sure. Also where does Rising fit in the timeline? Is it even canon? What about Metal Gear Survive?
What order should I play the Metal Gear games in...
Play in release order
MGR takes place after MGS4
Ignore Metal Gear Survive
Order of release faggot. There's a reason they make prequels and it's not so faggots can start from the earliest. It's to fill in holes and help you better understand the characters after getting to see them already.
IE. Big Boss in MGS3 after playing MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2
Always release order. Never chronologically.
As said million times: release order.
(MG1 > MG2 > ) MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS4 > MGS:PW (> MGS5:GZ > MGSV:TPP).
The series story progresses and evolves linearly with the release order, and each game assumes you have played the past game(s). Don't expect them to do too much "previously on MGS..." style introductions. Like at all.
The only exception would be the 2D MG games (1-2), that many skip for obvious reasons, even more so since MGS1 has fine summaries of them in its main menu. At least read those, and watch the "Briefing" videos while at it too.
Grab the MGS Legacy Collection for PS3, and you're good to go with the entire series that really matters. I'd almost recommend skipping MGS5 games, unless you want to experience the literal phantom pain of your own.
MGR is set in near future after MGS4, which is the chronological "ending" of the series. It's so-far-still-canon, at least it does not ruin anything in the MGS series itself.
start with the og MG on MSX if ur not a bitch
>playing mg and mg2
and I thought getting fucked in the ass was gay
>not playing any enjoying the fuck out of MG2:SS
you're the gay here, sonny.
>It's a "in what order should I play MGS" thread

If you want to make a metal gear solid thread at least don't be a fagget.

>huuuuurduuuur
MGS3>PO>PW>GZ>TPP>1>2>4
Stop.
Release order, start with mgs1 on playstation. Most people are too casual to play the msx games and i dont want to scare anyone away from this great series.
Rating wise id go 1>3>2>5>4. The beauty of this series is that everybody has different ratings. Theyre all so good.
Personally i think peacewalker is real bad. Like skippable bad. Just read about it and watch the cutscenes on youtube. The game is segmented up into tiny little areas that arent as cleverly designed to sneak through. There are no bosses, just loads of battles against tanks that take 15 minutes of calling in ammo and sitting in a corner. Some people here like it but i will never understand why. The plot about the boss ai is retarded and most of the characters it introduces are really lame.
MGS4 was literally made to be played after MGS3.
>Personally i think peacewalker is real bad. Like skippable bad. Just read about it and watch the cutscenes on youtube.
>5 over anything
Yeah, kill yourself and shut up.
PW was fucking blast. Easily the most FUN MGS to date, and the far superior "MGS5" game it was meant to be originally.
retard
When does MGS4 get gud? i just started the south africa forest mission and its boring af so far
also
mgs2 > 3 and 1
Play them in release order starting from MGS1. The original MSX games are also worth playing in my opinion (especially MG2) but they may scare you away from the series if you're a beginner. Rising takes place right at the end of the timeline. It's probably best to play that any time after you finish 4.
>"""playing""" mgs4
Why would you torture yourself?
5 does everything peacewalker did slightly better. Open world is a better choice for playing with the weapons you develop than timy little chunks of map. It also implemented having an army to mess with much better. If we are talking about FUN then 5 definitely wins in that regard. You have vehicles and can crawl and just more freedom in general. And thats just talking about the gameplay. The story in both was bad and dumb but i feel like 5 had a few more highs and was almost interesting. I'll admit that snake calling the government during the strangelove ass climax in peacewalker was pretty good, as was him accepting the title of big boss. I dont hate the game and tell people to kill themselves like a little babby. To each their own friendo.
Oh and 4 is 90% cutscene and shitting on the fanbase so i think its fair to prefer 5 over it. There isnt a single bit of character development i agreed with and most of what happens is nonsense. Its also a strangely ugly game. I much prefer the aesthetic of all the other games. Even 1. Actually especially 1, i dont think any game has nailed its visuals the same way that game does.
>When does MGS4 get gud?
Right from the get go.
>mgs2 > 3 and 1
ah, you're just a scat eating fagget. There's no salvation for you.
>5 does everything peacewalker did slightly better.
It literally, completely fails at EVERYTHING that made PW good.
It has no soul, no content in maps, literally butchers everything it had going for it in the plot and characters, it lacks its real ending, and it's pretty fucking amazing that a 3D mother base you can roam in feels more deserted, soulless and boring than a mere menu in PW.
Not to mention no co-op.
>Oh and 4 is 90% cutscene
Wrong again. The gameplay:cutscene ratio of MGS4 is roughly 40:60. Which is EXACTLY the same as in MGS2, with the #4 having the huge benefit of almost none of its obligatory cutscenes being just two green heads babbling about for quarter hour.
>TPP
>better than anything
jesus fuck what is wrong with you?!
Okay, I'll try... It's hard to describe but basically regardless of the hardware limitations, the entire of Peace Walker feels like a properly thought out and compiled package than the total mishmash of lackluster elements that is Phantom Pain. PW has a strong identity and an unmistakeable MGS aura, while TPP feels very much so many other AAA open-world games.
also, motherfucking CO-OPS.
The gameplay of 4 is the best of the whole series, nigger. It's also funny to see MGS2 fanbois shit on it, when their fave game has even less actual gameplay to offer, and that little is the clunkies torture you have to deal with in the whole series.
Play it in release order, why do people always question this?
Really though it doesn't matter because the games have retarded stories with more holes than Swiss cheese and more hand waves than the Macy's thanksgiving parade.
Play mgs1 then dont play any of the rest as its all down hill easily one of the worst franchises created
>defending metal gear solid 4 hours of gamelay
>mgs4 best anything
Where did it all go so wrong?
Even the crustfest that is mgs V is better than "metal gear solid" 4
