Wii

>Wii
>Attempted to Revolutionise gaming with motion controls
>Advancing the hardware took a back seat to the motion technology, and also to lower the cost to reach a wider audience
>Motion controls end up being a gimmick and most developers won't break away from traditional controller control schemes
>Wiimote needs another add-on to actually bring the initial 1:1 motion control dream
>Too late, only 3 games end up using Wiimote Plus

>Wii U
>"Hey the secondary screen worked for our portables, let's do it on console"
>Except now you have a detached screen because the (3)DS has the screens of the same size and right on top of each other, but the TV is a distance in front of you and the Wii U tablet is on your lap
>So there's a transition to look from TV to tablet
>So anything that's a function like an Inventory screen doesn't really save time
>Any other control scheme like using the tablet as a first person viewport is a gimmick
>Off TV screen is for kids that don't have money just to get a cheap personal TV/Monitor
>Again the hardware is pared back because of the cost of the tablet and also to lower the entry cost in general

>Switch
>"Let's combine the worst things about our previous two consoles to create this fucking Frankenstein!"
>Now we have motion controls, but it's also a fucking portable!
>Except if we're designing a game that's meant to be played at home and outside, the developers will stick with traditional controls every time
>Now that we have motion controls, that means we have detached controllers, therefore now not only do we need to charge the console, we need to charge the controllers as well
>As established, motion controls are gimmicks that will thrown out after the initial wave of games
>Hardware is again pared back to include gimmicks that will be discarded
>Except now the ticket price takes a larger hit for all these gimmicks

Just kill the console line and make a pure portable with no gimmicks. Fucks sake.

D O A

>>Except if we're designing a game that's meant to be played at home and outside, the developers will stick with traditional controls every time

How is this a bad thing? Devs using motion controls should always be a choice.

you conveniently ignored that the wii spanked the PS3 and 360 in sales volume despite not advancing the hardware space race

Damn you Nintendo, giving us the option to use motion controls, which also happen to be advantageous in some games!

I HATE how Nintendo is appealing to everyone but me!! REeeeEE!!!

Blunder of the Century. Twice in a row.

>Just kill the console line and make a pure portable with no gimmicks. Fucks sake.

Fuck people like you. Seriously.

>"The Switch sucks, it just has ports!"
>"But those ports all gain portability by being on the Switch. Doesn't that mean those ports are possible the best version of them?"
>"NO, portability is a GIMMICK"

When portability helps ports, its a gimmick, but when it can be used against the system, its a plus. Fuck you people.

The problem with nintendo it's they are too "unique" developers don't wanna waste time in that shit. While you can make games por ps4/xbox-one/PC almost the 3 at the same time.

I guess Switch It requires a lot more time that just make another standard game.

I really don't understand the target audience for Switch except the hardcore Nintendo fans. Why would any average consumer spend $300 on Switch when they can spend $250 on a stronger PS4 and get so much more games?

user, don't you want a portable console the size of a tablet and with a battery life of 3 hours? Keep in mind, Nintendo also proudly upholds their tradition of having completely underpowered hardware once again.

> $300 for switch garbage
> $50 less for an objectively better console with better hardware, graphics, games, Blu-ray, etc

Nintenbabies will unironically defend buying this trash. The only people who will buy switch are autists and hardcore Nintendo fans...i.e. IRRELEVANT CONSUMERS

To be fair, as a handheld, it's pretty powerful. Probably the most powerful handheld Nintendo has ever done in relation to the hardware available.

But yeah, they're marketing this as a console first and foremost and as a handheld secondary. I don't get that. 3DS was really popular while Wii U wasn't. Why not make it a handheld with TV capabilities? They really should've ditched the motion controls entirely.

I wanted the Switch to be successful, and maybe it will be, but I doubt it.

I wound up picking up a used Wii-U for about 150, and it included MK8, Smash, and a pro controller (as well as the tablet controller, obviously). I feel like I'll pick up Zelda and Xenoblade X, and I'll be content with it and the couple of VC games I want to buy (most of which requires me to switch over to the Wii mode, like Secret of Mana and Actraiser).

>handheld with TV capabilities

This.

Has anyone ever owned a Super Gameboy? I don't know about you but when I was a kid that shit was the bomb diggety. I was literally floored when I found out I could play pokemon blue ON MY TV. I had a hell of a time with that shit.

Why don't they just make a super powerful handheld with an attachment for HDMI hookup to TV? If the idea was that it's a portable-only that, as a bonus, you could hook up and play on your TV, I MIGHT consider it to not be total garbage.

To be fair, that's essentially what it is. It's not like you get any additional processor power for that 90 dollar AV port/dock.

>Devs using motion controls should always be a choice.

It's a choice that is hardly taken, or worked in in some awful secondary fashion. The point being that's what has happened historically.

>Damn you Nintendo, giving us the option to use motion controls, which also happen to be advantageous in some games!

Name a game with a traditional control scheme that was improved by adding on motion controls. Name a complete 8-12 hour singleplayer experience that only uses motion controls that is also good.

Its because Nintendo is cowardly and afraid. The 3DS is all that is keeping them alive now and they are deathly afraid of angering any 3DS users. They feel that if they marketed the Switch right away as a handheld successor, 3DS won't respond with "ok, the next handheld upgrade is here. I will wait for pokemon", but instead thinks they will respond with "Nintendo, the 3DS has a 50 million install base. I have been burned for the last time, I quit handhelds and am going smartphone games only now."

Nintendo is underestimating how dedicated their 3DS fanbase is, and thinks that everyone is as finicky as the Wii crowd was. It might also have to do with greed, wanting to take as much money from 3DS users as possible before it dies off.

>Name a complete 8-12 hour singleplayer experience that only uses motion controls that is also good.

I refused to play it BECAUSE of the waggle, but some friends of mine seemed to enjoy Skyward Sword.

3DS should've been killed off years ago. Fuck 3DS. Two Yoshida-drawn games wasted on that piece of shit 240p screen.

Was there any real reason to buy a "New" 3DS? What games released for it that were unplayable on the old 3DS that WEREN'T ports from other systems?

>Moving goalposts
Splatoon does it excellently.
Wind Waker HD does it excellently.
Breath of the Wild does it excellently.

What do they have in common? It's all completely optional. LITERALLY what is the problem with including motion controls in a system? Is it okay when Sony does it?

Literally the only real reason is that it's quicker, prettier, and for hacking to play o3DS games at a higher clockspeed.
>Exclusive games are all bad
>Most SNES games can be emulated on o3DS anyway

I haven't played any of those (and you haven't played one of those yet), but what motion controls did they add to Wind Waker HD (I have the GC version, so feel no need to buy the new one)?

Very minor, for adjustments of aim with bows and stuff. Works pretty well, and of course, can be disabled.
Also, I've played BOTW.

I have a working SNES, as well as a Wii U with the VC for the Wii AND Wii U. I have no need for pixel perfect recreations, as I actually have the carts for the games I love.

>Name a game with a traditional control scheme that was improved by adding on motion controls.
Pretty much any game that uses it for aiming. Resident Evil 4, Sin & Punishment 2, Splatoon, etc.

>Name a complete 8-12 hour singleplayer experience that only uses motion controls that is also good.
Zack & WIki

Would you say that such minor adjustments are worth the additional cost that comes with each controller?

Not attacking, genuinely curious.

>Was there any real reason to buy a "New" 3DS?

Besides the Xenoblade port, there really wasn't. But then, it happened:
>Fire Emblem Warriors, for Nintendo Switch
>And New 3DS exclusive

It's weird, it feels like Nintendo is trying to make the New 3DS their "Vita". You know, supporting it with a bunch of Nintendo console ports for some reason.

I think the N3DS is shit, but these are null arguments since they're not portable.

That's fair, but to also be fair, you can emulate a lot of those games on a Nvidia shield.

>>And New 3DS exclusive
Literally why?

Also, I remember how Nintendo shills destroyed PS4 Pro for having exclusive games and then N3DS comes out and does just that and they're all quiet. What gives?

In games like Wind Waker? Probably not. But in games like Splatoon, and I'm sure others in the future, it's a necessity.
As for the controller price, it's a bit high, but I think it's worth it for the 40h battery life. Won't be getting one on launch though, I'll probably wait to get one pre-owned or price-dropped.

As someone who has the Old 3DS and a Vita, I much prefer the Vita.

I get shit on all the time for that opinion, but I gave both an honest try.

That said, I'm not much for handheld games. I wound up playing most Vita games that didn't require the touchscreen on a PSTV with a dual shock 4. Still have the Vita for when I need it, though.

Which controller will have the 40 hour battery life? The Pro?

True, but it's also far more expensive. (At least in the UK.)

Yeah. Beats the shit out of the DS4, and Xbone. Super comfy too.

>>Name a game with a traditional control scheme that was improved by adding on motion controls.
>Pretty much any game that uses it for aiming. Resident Evil 4, Sin & Punishment 2, Splatoon, etc.

The IR pointer has a pretty lousy input delay on it. RE4 didn't have it's difficulty tuned to compensate for your much speedier aim speed so the game becomes easier.

You wouldn't include tech that is only really needed for a subset of game types. We're not gonna bundle a steering wheel with every PS4 so that you can have the best Gran Turismo experience.

But normies want it for Zelda

Source: Normies told me theyre buying it for Zelda

>How is this a bad thing?
then why make a controller focused on motion controls
you're paying extra and getting nothing in return

>PS4 Pro for having exclusive games
Wat. Source please, is that real? Legitimately pissed at that if true.
As for why Fire Emblem Warriors is only for the New 3DS and not the old 3DS, is probably because its a musou game. They saw how bad Hyrule Warriors runs on the old 3DS, and realized that similar style games can only be handled properly on the New 3DS.
As for them being quiet, for me, it felt like they were going to start having way better 3DS games, and suddenly all they did was port over Xenoblade Chronicles instead. Just like the question of, if a tree falls in the woods, and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound, when a new system is released, but it only gets one new game, can it be counted as a new system at all?

Is the Pro controller battery life confirmed already? If there was one thing the Wii U did right it was the controller battery life.

I would be willing to try a Pro if it was in a store display or something, but the Dualshock 4 is hands down the best controller I've ever held. I loved the first one so much that I bought 2 more: one for my PSTV and one for my PS3 (which only works sporadically, but it's worth using when you can; you would think Sony would fix that).

>>Name a complete 8-12 hour singleplayer experience that only uses motion controls that is also good.
>Zack & WIki

Did this game warrant all the R&D cost into the technology, and the hit to hardware to keep the cost down?

The Pro controller battery life. The Pad's life is pretty bad, so bad that I never unplug it.

The big problem I have with the N3DS is that devs don't really take advantage of the better hardware to make their O3DS games look better. To my knowledge only a very few games do, and some games that REALLY could use the boost like Pokémon just ignore it.

Nintendo did actually release an improved Wii U Gamepad battery which adds a few hours but it was not marketed at all and very hard to find. I think you had to get it from their site for a while.

>Wii U Pro controller
>80 hour battery life
>Joycons
>20 hour battery life
>PS4 controller: 3-4 hours
>Xbox controller: less then 5 hours

What the fuck is up with this bullshit? Why is it that only Nintendo has unlocked the alchemic equation for good battery life in controllers? Why is this unable to be done by Microsoft and Sony, yet Nintendo can do it?

3DS should have never been 240p

I appreciate the info, but I'm not spending money to improve the life of a pad. They were kind enough to include a cord that was like 10 feet long. That's fine.

What is the cause of the DS4's ridiculous battery drain anyway? The useless light or the touchpad?

>Wat. Source please, is that real? Legitimately pissed at that if true.
PS4 Pro doesn't have exclusive games unplayable on PS4. But the Nintendo shills were doing constant hits on Sony for saying it would happen. And then Nintendo turns around and does EXACTLY that and they all fell silent.

This kills the gaem.

>like Pokemon just ignore it

THIS. This shit bothered me the most. Sun and Moon would have been amazing if they were New 3DS exclusive, and took advantage of that.

i need that new märio, why'd they push it so far back?

I get more than 4 hours out of the DS4. I would say it's closer to 6. It's still not great, but the controller is comfy enough that I just bought a USB condom for like 3 bucks, and can continue to play by plugging it into an outlet while it charges.

What would be nice is if they would release a controller version with USB C, so it could recharge in like 20 minutes.

>You can dim the light, but you can't turn it off

Yeah, probably the light.

Wasn't the N3DS exsclusive port announced long before the PS4 Pro?

It doesn't even have to be exclusive, just make it a hybrid like MH4 did just fine.

Oh thank god, you scared me user. I own a PS4 along with my Nintendo systems, and I am never, NEVER buying a fucking Pro.

>then why make a controller focused on motion controls
so you can make games with motion controls

But its only a single LED, isn't it? That's like a single Watt. Think of all those LED flashlights that last for like 3 days off of a single AA battery.

why spend $250 on a ps4 with a handful of games when you can buy a ps2 which is dirt cheap and has a huge library

Ditto. No interest. I still wouldn't own a console if I couldn't have gotten this beauty for a reasonable price (I think all the stock looks of all the consoles are ugly as fuck).

*port of Xenoblade

We don't need a second stick for racing games or most JRPGs, but it's still there. Hell, we don't even need an analog stick for most 2D platformers and JRPGs. It's just about having options. Also, you only commented on the game that wasn't made with motion controls in mind.

Motion controls can allow for faster and more convinient camera control such as in Xenoblade Chronicles X because you don't have to move your thumb from the buttons. Even racing games could benefit from it by allowing more precise turning than sticks without the cost of a steering wheel.

Yes. Game is great and wasn't even made by Nintendo.

I could just be old, but the camera "moving" when you tilted the controller always bothered the fuck out of me.

This isn't a slam against Nintendo, specifically. I first noticed it with Heavenly Sword.

I'm getting 40h+ on 360 gamepad with good rechargeable AAs.

Amazon is selling Lithium Ion AAs right now. I've debated picking them up.

What sucks to me a lot:

>Splatoon announced
>Think "another new experimental Nintendo IP that will fail. This will suck, after all they can't all be Pikmin"
>Launches
>Splatoon ends up amazingly successful
>Good talk all around
>Get convinced to try it
>Splatoon ends up being my favorite game out of the Wii U's short lifespan
>"This is great. Nintendo finally gets a new IP that is successful. Its been so long, this is great. Nothing could go wrong now!"
>Kimishima: "Online is no longer free, now look at this Splatoon 2 trailer"
>Me: "FUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKK"

It really sucks. I hope this doesn't impact Splatoon 2 sales too much, but I feel that it definitely will.

Mario games are polished to a mirror sheen

Then why did 3D World suck so bad?

For their first party titles, Nintendo likes to space out their launch windows evenly so that each new game they release gets some time in the limelight without being overshadowed by the higher profile games. There are probably more marketing reasons for it, like wanting to make sure there's some interesting game on the horizon for people to look forward to, so that they don't release all the games people want at the same time and then end up with a long drought.

I'm hoping and expecting the opposite. I want the Switch to fail, but it will probably end up as another Wii.

I don't even want it to fail completely, just fail in its first year like the 3DS did so Nintendo has to do something radical (like making online gameplay free again) to try and entice customers. But a lot of "hardcore" fans are defending everything, so if casual fans latch onto it like they did the Wii we can kiss the possibility of a good Nintendo console before 2030 happening goodbye, assuming they even make consoles in 2030 with how uncertain the future is.

not to mention the shitty arm architecture. Seriously nintendo? a half clock X1? That's so much effort for devs with custom engines.
Prediction: 3rd party AAA support wanes after a year of hardcore engine contortion.

It's fun watching you all whine about this system daily.

I'll be having fun and enjoying my purchase while you all autistically screech on this board about shit that doesn't matter.

I really wish there was a Club Nintendo equivalent today in the sense of sending direct feedback to Nintendo. I'm sure they didn't even glance at it most of the time (saying most of the time because they cite Club Nintendo surveys for SPM being the reason Sticker Star was a thing) but it was a platform at least, and I always put thought into the games I registered, especially ones I didn't enjoy like ORAS.

My Nintendo is trash in both its rewards (there are currently zero games you can claim with points besides the Zelda Picross game that's been there since launch, no VC or anything, just 30% off discounts and tokens in Super Mario Run) and in having zero customer feedback options. I really want to be able to send Nintendo a message through official channels about shit like Spla2n being impacted by paid online, even if they'd just toss the message into the recycling bin without reading it.

Finished & banktupt: the company

Because it was the sixth NSMB rehash they shat out. Just look at pic related Odyssey sticks out like a sore thumb.

I'm glad Odyssey looks like a more original title. I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time.

>Only uses motion controls
Nice goalposts there bud but No More Heroes 1 and 2 did it pretty well, as did Mario Galaxy and even arguably Madworld, although the wagglan was the least of that game's issues.

Why are console users so autistic about the shape of their controllers? If it's not a clone of a ps2 controller they bitch incessantly.

Nice strawman, there has been talk of Cross-account linking regarding Virtual Console and other downloads, you're also ignoring several games that are definitive versions on Switch such as DQ Heroes 1/2, MK8, etc.

No Bomberman in Q1, No FE Warriors in Q3, No Specter of Torment (Which is it's own release) for Switch OR PS4

Also 3 hours is just as good as the DS4's battery life and just buy a goddamn powerbank you poorfag.

I came here to say NMH 1 & 2. I own and completed both, tried to play the HD version on PS3 with a Dualshock and the controls just weren't as fun. The slight amount of motion controls were used perfectly for the game.

Damn now I got myself all excited for NMH3

>30$ ethernet adapter
Stopped reading there. You can get a perfect ethernet adapter for bellow 9$

The worst part is that 3D World and U. are actually where the series hits its stride. And people were sick of the games by that point.

NSMB2 is a gimmicky abomination, but U. and 3D World at least have a little charm to them and are fun in Co-Op.

I want Joycon Classic controls to be an option, SUDA would be insane not to include both with the new controller, it'd be a perfect balance between Heroes' Paradise players and the Wii fans, Joycons mirroring the Wiimote and Nunchuck as separate controllers, and together in the grip as a more traditional gamepad.

>Bought an ethernet adapter for less than 5$ and it works perfectly for my Wii U

Like, none of the games are that demanding bandwidth wise, at most Smash (Which has issues of its own regardless of Ethernet use), so there's no need to overspend.

Bad controllers correlate with failed systems. The Dreamcast gave you carpal tunnel and cut your thumb, the Xbox was tanking until the controller s, and GameCube.

>make a pure portable with no gimmicks
Why Nintendo don't simply become a third party and produce games for steam and PS4?

Literally another fucking clueless youngster.

Here's the thing; there's NO place for Nintendo to release SUPER POWAH home console anymore, and they know it.

Home consoles are dying. The PS4 and Xbone are nothing but shit-tier PC rigs. what the pint of Nintendo trying to fight that war? Gaming as we know it is changing.

Nintendo's concept of a portable device which docks to your TV is actually forward thinking - this is the avenue which this kind of tech will lean to in the future.

Nintendo - love them or hate them - at least fucking TRY to bring something new to the table and gaming would be a fucking sorry state without them constantly pushing the envelope.

The problem with Nintendo isn't their hardware or their gimmicks, it's their own fucking stupidity when it comes to marketing.

Another moron.

Nintendo have no need to go 3rd party as they have some of the biggest IPs in gaming. They can release their own consoles with nothing on it but THEIR 1st party games and bank the cash til the end of time.

This.

This.
>FE is dying as a series because they never market it
>Actually market it for once
>Fates and Awakening actually sell
Regardless of Waifushit, Nintendo need to learn to actually market their games and consoles.

At least BotW is getting solid ads from what I've seen.

Mah nigga, I got that console cuz it's classy as fuck.

Didn't Total Biscuit say that motion controls were better for FPS than console controllers.

>Sun and Moon being N3DS exclusive
There is an improvement but it's barely noticable. It's only during Double battles+ that the game chugs as opposed to singles on N3DS, because the engine is an unoptimized piece of shit. They would never make it have anything more than a feature or two exclusive (B&W with the DSi) because otherwise they couldn't get maximum sales.

I can understand why FE Warriors is N3DS exclusive but the more important question is why isn't it just Switch exclusive? Surely in your first year, you want to have as many exclusives to sell your system as possible? FE Echoes is already coming to 3DS so it's not like fans are being shafted there.

>didn't TotalBiscuit say
>TotalBiscuit say
>TotalBiscuit

Ah. Spotted your problem there. You implied that anything he says is important, relevant, or correct.

Please let the cancer take him before more autists like you try to quote him.

I mean, he's not wrong.
>Prime Trilogy

>better
>being this subjective

Don't get me wrong, I loved the prime trilogy. Motion controls worked for THAT game, but you cannot say with any real truth that motion controls are better for fps.

I would hate to play fast paced shooters like Titanfall or anything else on a shitty set of motion controls with the margin for error in accuracy.

The motion controls are good because that means it'll play Wii games without having to use the god awful Wiimotes that run out of battery in minutes

Motion Controls won't work for anything properly competitive or with any real speed, I feel. Especially if anyone playing is susceptible to motion sickness.

>DOOM '16 with Motion controls

And the worst Prime game is the one built around the shitty motion controls anyways.

Prime works because it has a lot of slower moments as a whole, but you're right when it comes to stuff like Titanfall.

I can't shitpost when you word retorts in such an agreeable tone user, stop being such a faggot jeez

Yes, I'd say D44M would be a shit show with motion controls. You're right when you say the slow movement of prime is what made it doable with motion controls, and dare I say fun?

But yeah. I respectfully agree with you. You rat-bastid.

Are sony and microsoft fans still mad this is the only console worth buying?

What a fucked thing to say.

This.
I am some some poor fag so PS4 and Xbox are entirely irrelevant. when a good game comes out I play it at a friends and then gift it to him. Everything else runs better, looks better and plays better on my PC. Nintendo has a large enough library that I care to keep, unlike the 6 games I bought for PS4 and Xbox. Getting it on release.

Why are you fags talking about Prime-style point-and-click motion controls when all the Switch controllers have gyro, which is objectively the best control method for a shooter on consoles?
