As you can see in this thread, Dragon Quest is the franchise you should look at.
Otherwise you usually cant go wrong with the older FFs.
Furthermore I suggest stuff like Suikoden, Front Mission or Trails in the Sky.
I haven't played I am Setsuna but from what I've gathered it's a traditional JRPG
