3ds actually had games on it.

Proprietary memory cards. Also nobody wants to buy a handheld unless it has a killer "app". Vita has none. Pokemon alone will move console sales.

Because the vita had proprietary memory cards, little to no support or advertisement and pretty much thats it. System is solid but everything else fucked it over.

3ds had better support in the end, better AAA titles (MH), didn't use proprietary memory cards and well advertise

3DS was flopping for 2 years. Monster Hunter literally pulled the thing out of a hole. New Leaf did wonders in Japan and Pokemon X/Y secured it's life.

While the Vita saw a surge with Persona 4: The Golden, it didn't get anything MonHun tier to pull it out, and proprietary memory cards plus no bundled card didn't help in getting things started.

At least most of the Vita's worthwhile IPs like Gravity Rush and Tearaway got to have a second chance off the Vita. Would have liked to have seen Soul Sacrifice and Freedom Wars move off of it too.

Because it got a game that sold units that convinced others to make games.

Capcom is the only reason the 3DS didn't stay down with the Vita.

Vitas largest memory card cost almost as much as the vita a few years back, if not more in some cases

The DS lasted seven before the 3DS took it's place.

The Gameboy was out for almost ten years before the GBC came out and while GBA came out 3 years later, it also only lasted about 3 years until the DS replaced it.

I don't keep up with game sales, how were the attachment rates for games on the Vita besides BL2? I own one, many games for it too, but I never see many of them discussed as being sellers except Persona 4 Golden.

also notice how I own both, and love both, but the Vita is definitely a better piece of hardware. The difference in screen is fucking appalling, if a game comes out on both I rarely get the 3DS version. I also have the New 3DS XL

I have henkaku. I almost regret buying this Vita though. Nothing I've played as interested me longer than an hour. And one of my favorite series, Wipeout, has the WORST iteration of it on Vita.

Those memory cards didn't help one bit.

on average it was aa 84.3 metascore for 3DS and 80.3 for the Vita. Many of the best handheld games are on the 3DS but the Vita has a large amount as well. I feel like the Vita got kind of memed out of popularity like it was faux pas to own one

I think the Vita failed because there was no clear reason to buy one. Most of Vita's library is crappier versions of games you could get on the PS3 and later PS4.

The 3DS has worse specs, but the system has plenty of games that set it apart from other gaming devices and make it worth purchasing:

1) price. Vita was actually a bargain for the price relative to the power of the hardware, and 3DS is woefully underpowered and was actually the same original price, but it still had its price slashed, and low price points matters A LOT when it comes to portables.

2) pokemon and monster hunter. Remember that the 3DS was basically a dud for its first year and nobody bought the damn thing until mario kart and pokemon came out.

I know people say the 3DS was great, but I didn't care for it at all. And I played the shit out of my gameboy, gameboy advance, and DS and had countless games for all of them.

But with the 3DS... eh, I just wasn't feeling it. The only game I actually bothered playing all the way through was Zelda ALBW. Hell, I originally picked up my 3DS specifically to play Pokemon XY, and I never even bothered getting to the 2nd gym because there was just something tedious and bland about it that I couldn't put my finger on. And I didn't like Mario 3D land, and I didn't care for the Mario Kart game because it just didn't feel any special or better or different than the DS one.

It's not like I was just burned out on video games, because I went back and played plenty of other non-3DS games, and even plenty of GBA/DS games. I think it has something to do with 3D (as in gameplay design, not 3D screen) games on a handheld. There's just something underwhelming about it.

Besides the reasons you mentioned, because 3D gaming on a handheld is shit. 3D games are more complex and take more time/energy to make. GBA and DS had tons of good games, because it's easy to churn out quality stuff on a 2D platform.

It does seem pretty cool to play, but I think it's weird shape would kill sales potential. How would you carry that thing with you? It's so awkwardly shaped and seems not easily portable.
