Games that got better with age
Just replayed this for the first time in years and it went from a 7/10 to a 9/10. What are some other games you revisited that surprised you?

Other than Colors, I have never played a 3D Sonic game. I liked Colors, do you think I'll like this one?
Try Generations first, should be a smoother transition

Well this is the start of the boost trilogy of Sonic games (on console at least). Some people find it flawed but I personally think it's the best one. The sense of speed, detail, length of stages, and complexity of later stages is unrivaled in the sequels, which slow things down and turn the boost gameplay into something more of a standard 2D platformer. How Sonic Unleashed works is that the day stages give you unparalleled speed (Sonic won't ever be going this fast again). It's a bit easy for the first few stages but the second half of the game plus the DLC (very recommended BTW) ramps up the difficulty with more intense and harder enemy and obstacle placement. And then there's the night stages, which balance out the insane speeds with more standard 3D platforming and combat. If you like Sonic Colors, Sonic Unleashed and/or Sonic Generations are definitely worth trying.
Oh yeah, how does a classic get better with age? Mario 64 will always be a timeless game IMO. Is it because of what came out after?
Really didn't enjoy Ace Combat 4 that much, controls were pretty stiff compared to X (My first AC) and i hated the fuck out of the timed missions which were everywhere
Due to my love for the other games i came back to it though, i feel like slapping myself in the fucking face for not appreciating this beauty at first
But my face is too pretty for that
Seriously i'm a cutie
sonic unleashed is objectively a 3/10, though on the sonic scale it could be a 9/10, sure
You don't know what 3/10 is
Unleashed isn't even that good.
Yeah, the boost stages are alright, but what's the fucking point when the Werehog stages take three times as long to complete and to progress you have to find all of the stupid medals? Then you still have to slog through the pretty hub, which is a pain in the dick to navigate, and stupid shit like the Tornado stages.
Unleashed is okay if you already beat the game, but playing through the game is a snoozefest.
If you liked Colors then you'll enjoy Generations. They fuck up the final boss and Planet Wisp though.
...
To me it was about the journey. That's what the whole game feels like. Its one of those grandiose games where traveling and seeing new areas to follow a big adventure is part of the draw. Yeah if you don't like a half of the game it's not going to be a pleasant ride but I enjoyed almost everything the game has to offer. I can't recommend the DLC enough, seriously. It adds just the right amount of difficulty that the main games was perhaps missing. Even the night stages DLC beef up the enemies and platforming. It makes a good game even better and is cheap as fuck/good value to.
I don't think a game physically can get better with age.
What's actually happened is that Sonic has gotten even worse than he was in 2008 thanks to games like Lost World and Boom so Unleashed looks better in comparison
It's still mediocre, it just looks better relatively speaking. Like how Twilight Princess suddenly started seeming alright when Skyward Sword came out and was absolutely shit.
unparralled level of control
>that framerate
Literally ruins even the good parts, thank god most of the day stages got ported to the Generations engine.
Maybe but I don't think that's the case. I'm doing a "Road to Sonic Mania" of sorts, going through all the main games in anticipation for Mania. Being in 2008 I'm pretty close to finishing my marathon. I always liked the game since the beginning but I just find it even better now, that's all.
Mario Sunshine had even better controls. He had pretty much everything from 64 and Fludd was able to be used in creative ways.
Sonic Unleashed is probably the best looking Sonic game, to this day not a single future Sonic title looks as good as Unleashed. Even Forces looks less impressive so far than Unleashed.
I just played this today and it's still one of the shittiest games I've ever played.
Pretty much this. General consensus has always been that Ow the Edge was the start of the dark age for Sonic that lasted until Colors, I'm surprised that I've seen so many people here defend this game.
because its fun
i went back and played sonic unleashed again. man things really do seem weird now that im a little older
pic related
Thats not really from ass effect is it?
it is
Lost World isn't even that bad. Especially not on the level of Boom, which is basically shovelware.
What is something besides the music it does well? To me it has the worst story of any Sonic game to date, the graphics and environments are not only lazy but a huge step down from what came before, its one of the slowest Sonic games, the controls are very stiff, the controls are confusing or unexplained as is the parkor, the main parkor element is brushed because there's invisible springs everywhere, the 2D parts feel awful because of the stiff controls. To top it all off it feels like a Mario game with a Sonic skin. Seriously what does it do right?
>the graphics and environments are not only lazy but a huge step down from what came before
The game runs at 1080p and 60 fps. That alone is an improvement. I agree the art style isn't as nice looking, but it's also easier to see.
>its one of the slowest Sonic games, the controls are very stiff
The game is as close to a 3D platformer that Sonic has gotten. It's not amazing, but the potential is certainly there. The parkour is a very interesting and very underutilized mechanic.
