The game is not bad at all, really. Based on what I have played so far I would give it a solid 8-8.5/10, and in a post-Witcher3 world, which raised the bar substantially for story open world RPGs, that is perfectly acceptable. I don't really think the game had a chance to be at -that- level.
I think all the early negative opinions (read:opinions) biased people's viewpoint of the game. Before you spit out a negative review based on somebody else's views, actually try playing the game for a solid 20+ hours. Give it a fair chance and it rewards you with a worthy space adventure.

I have a hunch it's "cool" to hate on Mass Effect for this one because so many knew so many of us would be ready to hate BioWare more after the ME3 ending and for certain other not game related reasons.
Because honestly, all the MAJOR GAMEBREAKING GRIPES seem like huge fucking nitpicks to me. Yeah, the story isn't as urgent but it's all about exploring a new galaxy, not saving our old one. Open world, love it or hate it, whatever. Yeah, character graphics/animation aren't up to where other games are, but they're not TERRIBLE and the environments and action gfx are great. Bioware will patch anyway and we gonna get some awesome DLCs that will fix stuff too.

I think the complaints about both writing and animation are blown way out of proportion. They both produce a few cringy moments but it hasn't ruined it for me. The gameplay is fantastic and I love the exploration. The game gives off a great "alien" vibe, from the new skeletons for Milky Way species giving huge Turians and Salarians to the Remnant giving a real Illos vibe.
Waiting for a sale is usually a good move for every game, so do so if you want, but if you liked the trial and/or aren't strapped for cash like a pleb I say just buy it. It's Mass Effect after all.
