Shadowlord was the man with the plan. Literally. Only he knew how to properly rejoin a gestalt and replicant, but Papa Nier and Weiss refused to cooperate since gestalts can't properly communicate with replicants.

To be honest Devila, Popola and Noir could've explained it all. Instead they chose to say shit. These three who doomed the world. Nier / Weiss did nothing wrong.

The Shadowlord was the only one capable of processing maso into the form needed by other gestalts. Without him, all gestalts were guaranteed to relapse. His death didn't immediately kill the rest of the gestalts, but doomed the project as a whole.

One of the Project Gestalt archives has the timeline. I think it took a few hundred years for the last few to relapse.

How is the Jap voice work in Automata?
I went with English for my first playthrough because that is what I played the first game on.
It wasn't bad but there were parts I cringed a bit, might switch over to Jap for my second playthrough on hard mode.

Yes, when your gestalt dies they don't have the genetic information they need to produce a new replicant body. On top of that the replicant comes down with a 100% fatal disease when their gestalt dies or relapses because they're linked at all times. So once your gestalt relapses or dies, you are going to die painfully via the black scrawl and it cannot be cured, and when you die they cannot remake the replicant (even if they could remake the replicant, the remade replicant doesn't retain the dead replicant's memories so "you" are dead either way).

Some files either in the first game or in Grimoire Nier from Devola and Popola's point of view speculate that gestalts suddenly started relapsing despite being given purified maso BECAUSE replicants were gaining sentience, again presumably because they are linked at all times. Assuming that's true, replicants were doomed to extinction as soon as they became a real race, and the reason humanity died out was because they were in such a rush to escape WCS they couldn't perfect the replicant system (and their solution to the flaws to the gestalt project was more of a bandaid solution)

I think it's a bit disingenuous with Nier. The endings in Nier aren't even really branches, they aren't really different expect in the case of C and D, each ending just shows you a different perspective or goes on for a little longer. Ending D is canon, Lost World is just an extension, in the same way Around the World in 80 Days is just an extension of events. Calling it "Ending E" is dumb, but it's pretty much in the spirit of Nier's ending scheme.

Better, as usual. The first Nier was an exception to the rule.

Agreed. I also find it disingenuous that D2 isn't actually an extension of D1's A ending. Taro made Ending A of D2 worse, and Ending C of D2 world ending instead of a "happily ever after." I get that he didn't direct D2, but if you're going to keep saying it's its own thing because you didn't touch it, then treat it that way.

Finally got the A ending, 35 hours of playtime so far. Also missed the L ending because those fucking cryptic descriptions "leave the final battle area" I assumed they meant Eve not the earlier battles which are NOT final.

After some later story portions I realized how important some of these sub quests actually are in the main story.
They really add that extra punch.

Haven't got the Steel Pipe yet, but the best weapon I've found is the Angel Wing Gauntlets (not sure if that's their actual name - its the best pair that Emil sells though). Other weapons can do more damage, but those gauntlets just put out an insane amount of damage per second.

Don't worry too much about the extra endings, all of them aside from Y can be reattempted later in the game.

However don't miss Y or you're fucked. It comes from failing the last segment of the secret boss.

I don't recall it actually being explained in-game but they're important from a thematic / symbolic standpoint if nothing else.

That's also where I got mine. When fishing in the caves under the city I found some similar items to the sewer but no weapons. I assume there's only one to get since I fished those areas out.

I feel like the quality is less consistent, i.e. some lines in Jap feel way dumber and some lines feel way better. So it's hard to say.
