Sonic 1-3&K are the games Sonic is suited for. It's why they went with an animal like a hedgehog, which curls into a ball. To allow for those pinball physics. Otherwise they would have gone with a rabbit.

They deviated from that playstyle, and focused on speed alone. Which, for some games, are serviceable. You have Unleashed, and colors, and generations, and both Rush games.
Note, however, that all the stuff that deviates from either rolling, or going fast, sucks.
