Any oldfags here (at least 27 and up) notice they're not as good in competitive games as they used to be? I'm 31, used to play games like Unreal Tournament, Quake, Starsiege: Tribes, Counter Strike, etc, and I was pretty damn good. Used to play a lot of competitive Halo in college and won my fair share of tournaments. I would say I was in the top 10% of players in most games I played.
I'm not bad today, but holy fuck, I'm not nearly as good anymore. I don't know if it's because there are so many more online gamers these days that competition has gotten harder, or my age is catching up to me and my reflexes are starting to shit out. In Overwatch I'm a low Diamond but I honestly don't know if I will ever reach Master. In CS:GO I just get shit on constantly. I don't play it much, but even then, my natural abilities seem to have diminished substantially.
I've gotten a lot less competitive as I've gotten older, so it's not something that bothers me too much. I'm just curious if there are other old pieces of shit like me who used to be good but just can't frag like they used to.
28 here, I rarely play any sort of pvp ever because I've always sucked.
Jaxson Peterson
Did you used to play cs 1.6 my nigger? That was my jam. Best summer holidays ever playing that all the time, even though I was on fucking dial up.
Cs_assault was the best. I used to love jumping on my teammates and trapping them when they went in the vents. Top kek. Or challenging last enemy alive to a knife fight then busting out my ak and blowing him away. Tip top lulz
Oliver Gray
I do notice
29 here
I play MP and I do like competitive games but actually now I play to help me focus and keep the spark on
On the other side I now tend to drift away in my thoughts. Also can't eat the things I liked before no more. Shit sucks.
Noah Peterson
32 here. I'm Bronze in Overwatch. Feels bad. Reflexes just aren't what they used to be.
Isaac Clark
Yeah I played 1.6 on my badass eMachine. When we switched from dial up to DSL it was a whole new world.
Liam Wood
go to bed gramps
Juan Morgan
31
slowed reaction times, can't pound the buttons like I used to and my hands hurt after only about 45 minutes, when about a decade ago it would take 3-4 hours for the same pain to arise
Easton Adams
Just waiting for the meds to kick in you 90s faggot
Christian Garcia
>4am Listen here son
No, actually I should go to bed. I'm just uploading a draw
We're not THAT old, are we? What I most notice is how stupid the kids are in communities. God damn.
Grayson Rogers
the mmo crazy of early 00s is what changed it all for me. spent years playing all the different mmos having so much fun i just left fps games behind and my 'skills' eroded. teaming up with others for a greater goal was such a blast. swg in particular sucked me in so hard i had fun making a crafting empire and just goofing off in player cities instead of killing other people, god damn i miss that game. i dont think i even touched fps games for like 5 years stright from 02 to 07 i played mmos and morrowind 24/7.
Logan Myers
28 here, I honestly didn't get decent at games until I developed the right mentality. When I was younger I always tried to avoid cheap tactics, now I embrace anything that works. My reactions and vision do seem a bit worse though, sadly.
Henry Parker
Yep. 31 here as well, and I just don't even bother with competitive FPS's anymore. It's just an exercise in frustration at this point.
Wyatt Morales
Fuck man me too. I never played SWG though, I really wish I had. I dabbled in Everquest, but my first real MMO was Asheron's Call. AC basically got me to quit playing Diablo 2, and then once I graduated highschool WoW came out. After that my life was ruined.
Cooper Roberts
As you get older, you start taking on real world responsibilities and have less time for gaming. I used to compete in street fighter tournaments and do pretty well in college/just after college. After I got married, had a kid, and got a job with a 60 mile commute I'm lucky if I can get an hour or two of fighting games a week, and it's just online. As a result my abilities have tanked.
Carter Adams
I'm 29 and I've almost eked out diamond this season after barely placing plat last season. Hit 2900 then tanked down to 2600. Why is Overwatch so hard?
Jace Ramirez
I'm 29 and no, I wouldn't say so.
What I noticed is a difference in time commitment. When I don't put much time into a game, I'm not very good at it. Once I've put a few hundred hours in, I'm extremely good at it. I've been playing Planetside 2 for 2-3 years and it took me that long to reach a point where I'm regularly getting 6+ kdr when the game is otherwise a complete shitfest for people and the average player is running around at 0.8 kdr
Couple weeks ago I picked up Titanfall 2, and I was absolute dogshit at it at first. I've got a little over a day's worth of playtime now and I'm starting to keep up with some of the better players in my network, and getting a feel for the maps and the way the game plays/works.
It's not losing skills/abilities it's entirely time commitment. You just don't remember the fact you put the game on for 6 hours every day back when you were 14 and got an absolutely insane amount of practice at it.
Asher Young
sorry to rain on your parade gents but average age of video game players is 31 years old according to ESA. you're all the average like the rest of us. if you're in your 30s you're the norm.
Ryder Perez
Reaction time doesn't appreciably drop until your 60's.
reaction time is closely tied to IQ
Henry Turner
>average is 31 >if you're in your 30's your the norm
That's not how averages work, bruh.
Blake Edwards
29, had this problem, decided to start eating right and exercising, problem went away.
You can get away with being out of shape and still having good reflexes when you're younger, but it requires work once you're a grown ass man.
Joseph Sanders
OP here. True, the amount of time I can commit to gaming isn't what it used to be. I'm not married and don't have children, though, so I'm still free to be a fuck up and do whatever I want, but balancing work, social life, and real world shit, it's still hard to play games whenever I feel like it. I don't understand how people with children find any time for games honestly, I feel limited as it is.
It doesn't help that all online games have autistic screamers over voice chat flinging shit at their walls and calling you a niggerfaggot anytime your team is behind. I don't remember people acting like that back in the day, but maybe my memory is shit because I'm old.
Dylan Walker
29 here. I've still got my reflexes and awareness, but I hate everything that comes out and can't sit myself down and play like I used too. Feelsbadman.jpg
Michael Martinez
Makes sense, I used to play CSS with dudes in their late 30s. And they would whoop my ass when I was 18/19.
Liam Hughes
Pub online gaming has always been shit. The only time I've ever seen people behave civil on a large scale is in guilds or clans where there is threat of punishment or being ostracized.
William Evans
could it be that you switched from crt to lcd tv? That or you've just killed too many neurons w/ booze.
Also, normally the best reaction body can pull off is somewhere between 13:00 to 17:00 - incidentally, the time when oldfags are busy with bux-mining.
Jackson Taylor
>The average age of someone who plays games is 31 years old. In fact, more gamers are over the age of 36 than between the ages of 18 to 35 or under the age of 18. They are also mostly men, but by a slimming margin. Men make up 52 percent. From 2012 to 2013, the number of women gamers over the age of 50 grew by 32 percent.
git gud faggots
women over 50 are fragging your asses right now. you probably got rekt in dark souls by someone old enough to be your grandma.
Easton Morales
My reflexes and precision have always been garbage so I don't notice any difference. In fact I'm doing slightly better since I play smarter now than I did as a teenager.
Lincoln Hill
>It doesn't help that all online games have autistic screamers over voice chat flinging shit at their walls and calling you a niggerfaggot anytime your team is behind. I don't remember people acting like that back in the day, but maybe my memory is shit because I'm old.
Nah, it's relatively new, as in like it's emerged in the last decade. Games used to have banter, now they're just mean-spirited as all fuck. The general population just has a lot less social tact, so they can't tell the difference between acting like a cunt and actually being a cunt.
Isaac Kelly
>reaction reaction time, i mean
Austin Roberts
>In Overwatch I'm a low Diamond it's age, because any who has played UT, quake, and tribes would not touch overwatch with a ten foot pole because of how horribly casual it is, but you are clearly getting old and needing more casual games as a result.
i'm 32, the actual answer is still yes, your reflexes get worse with age. some games i can still play on hard difficulties, like i have no problem doing nier automata on very hard which is one hit kill from any attack, but duke nukem 2 on anything but easy absolutely destroys me these days
Parker Nelson
sorry op but it's not an age thing. i'm 30 and i still play broodwar at 350 apm against high lvl koreans in their teens and win. you probably just don't want to dedicate the time/effort that you used to to practicing something like quake
Mason Bell
I used to be top 500 ranked on mplayer (game service by hearme, similar to gamespy, was bought out and killed off) in quake 3 with a 56k modem, then early 512k dsl, Think it had over half a million ranked players on it.
I was so good at one point id hit 8/10 rails in 1vs1 all the time, 9/10 if i was ballin even on a 56k, got accused of using a bot so much, but never did... could rocket jump like it was nobodies business, wall climb with the plasma gun and rail people right out of the air.
I could beat every stage and bot on knightmare with little issue, even in online servers.
I played fatality on dm17 i think when he was top 5 ranked in the world and got slaughtered, killed him once, though so there was a bell curve but i was way ahead of the +standard deviations it wasnt even funny.
If i booted it up now i cant even beat, phobos hunter or klesk on knightmare.
I wonder if i could get back to being 98% of what i was again, im hype about quake champions.
Must have put 50-70 hours a week every week into q3 for years.
Jaxon Gonzalez
Is that 2007 Turok?
Also any oldfags and millenials that have got this remaster already?
Josiah Barnes
No. I'm 28 and still rape other people regularly online. Lately I've been playing a lot of Overwatch because it's a nice change of pace from standard AFPS and I just hit 4600 SR.
Christopher Thomas
32 here. Grew up playing Quake and goldsource games. Reflexes have gotten worse but I adapted with craftier plays. It took a while to force myself to play smarter, utilizing patience and game awareness. After a while you start seeing patterns from clearly younger twitch focused players and develop strats to abuse their youthful rush gameplay.
Not getting top frags 24/7 like in ye olden days but I still manage to do good.
Michael White
>mplayer man i remember those there was also HEAT and TEN which were all basically the same >hype about quake champions from someone who religiously played quake and quake team fortress for many years, even after quake 2 and 3 came out, and even half-life, don't be. it's not gonna be anything like the quake games you know and love.
Dylan Brown
32years old btw
games like diablo 2, deus ex, baldurs gate, fallout and system shock pushed me more into singleplayer rpgs away from quakelikes, then mmos started hitting the net and i played less and less pure fps as time went on.
Jordan Cook
Chill. I've played all those games. You need to stop taking yourself so seriously. You're 32. You're never going pro, it's a hobby.
Parker Taylor
I had no idea mplayer was even still around then. I used to play Red Alert on it, I thought it was dead by the time Quake 3 came out. I didn't have it though, played UT instead. Have since played a lot of Quake Live and loved it though. Fragging Fatality even once is impressive as fuck, I remember watching a video of him in like a 1v6 and it took them forever to get a kill.
Andrew Smith
yes siree, it is.
didn't bother with the remaster
Blake Rogers
>didn't bother with the remaster
What the fuck man
It's really good
Bentley Murphy
>27
Spring chicken in my book.
Noah Jones
No such thing as reflexes getting worse. If football and hockey players can play in the highest paying leagues past the age of 35, then you can fucking play a videogame at the highest level past the age of 25.
Joseph Jenkins
time for nosatalgia bombs old fags
give me a you if you ever used any of these: won.net kali all seeing eye gamebanana (or cs central) TEN
Caleb Torres
I'm 22 and I'm not so good anymore, and this is pretty much normal. When cybersports(as opposed to modern eSports) were a thing, typical shooter player's career ended at 24-25 years because at that age he would certainly lose to 16-18yo player due to reaction speeds. No amount of tactics, crafty play and such can help it.
Blake Parker
My reflexes are a little worse but I'm not an idiotic child always acting purely on impulse anymore so overall I'm still better than I was. All the reflexes in the world don't mean anything if you're a fucking idiot.
William Butler
They are actively maintaining themselves. Most of the people in this thread spend eight hours sitting at a desk, drive home, spend the next six hours alternating between different chairs in their house, then go to bed.
Dylan Myers
I can barely aim a mouse straight anymore.
Brody Rivera
>I'm 31, used to play games like Unreal Tournament, Quake, Starsiege: Tribes, Counter Strike
me too(32 years old). the only competitive fps i play now is cs:go, and i only play gun game.
i almost always come in top 3, and people often accuse me of hax. i tell them i had the upper hand because i'm playing at 150fps because i'm humble and have a big, juicy dong.
so, no, i haven't noticed a huge drop in reaction times, but, then again, i've always been a bit of a twitchy spaz.
Thomas Jones
Fatal1ty? Is that why we don't hear much from you anymore, faggot?
Nathaniel Martinez
nearly in same position and mindset. still manage to be at first top3 in random cs1.6 matches and nearly all the time the first in HL and DM: Classic
Nolan Flores
29 here, I'm pretty sure reflexes are still fine but I just don't care anymore. last comp game I played was overwatch and I made it to master but can't be bothered to go for GM.
10 years ago I would've done it but now any ambitions to rank up are gone.
Blake Robinson
28 years old here, only "competetive" game I ever really got into was Counter Strike 1.5. I can't even tell if I was good at it, I was playing for fun with irl friends in an internet cafe most of the time.
Christopher Brooks
Holy fuck, you just made me realize that today for my day off the only 3 places I've been are my sofa, computer chair, and now my bed. Not including my drive to the bank and then to get fast food. I'm a piece of shit.
Thomas Edwards
I'm 25 so I don't really count however I already have RSI (repetitive strain injury) in my hands and signs of early onset arthritis presumably from playing games just about every day since I was 3.
Evan Sanchez
28 You gotta keep up practice. this isn't Smash Bros. Melee
Anthony Jenkins
i stopped buying games for nearly 6 months now - must clear out the backlog first
Cameron Nguyen
What mod?
Ian Gray
Condition Zero
James Sanchez
that's vanilla CS CZ Deleted Scenes
Christopher Jenkins
16 is long past the peak for twitch reflexes
you peak out at around age 12
also the best players in CS, the king of twitch games, are an average age of 24
so...
Cameron Cruz
Ehh, I'm 31 as well. I just tried playing Black OPs 2 just now and was last on the score board every time. But then again, I was playing it on my Wii U Gamepad screen and haven't played the game in awhile. I've spent the last few months playing Bloodbourne. I've been good at that game so far minus a few cheap deaths.
I have noticed my reaction times slow down a bit though in the more competitive shooters though. Battlefield... Advanced Warfare... etc. But I think it is because I barely play those games anymore and am just rusty. I moved on to shit like Witcher and Bloodbourne and stuff like that. I just watch this vid and remember that age means nothing. If this fat old faggot can get top spot in Call of Duty, then that just means that I am just too rusty and need to dedicate more time to playing FPS.
>I thought it was dead by the time Quake 3 came out
It was dying, i recall everybody switched to gamespy arcade i think.
I think i played rainbow six and rogue spear a lot on mplayer too.
Dominic Gomez
27 here. Still raping people in CSGO with AWP flick shots and one taps but it doesn't work anymore without being on caffeeine.
Gabriel James
get on my level: drink vodka and rape them with M3 pump-action shotgun
Michael Hernandez
I was one of the best World of tanks players in EU when I was 28, so i dont thing its related to age, I was unemployed and I had too much time to play. When I was a kid I played CS 1.6 almost every day, so I was pretty good.
When you are an adult, you cant do this anymore. I only play SP because I dont have time to waste and I only can play like 20m
Sebastian Thompson
> shotguns take skill
lul
Benjamin Richardson
>Fragging Fatality even once is impressive as fuck, I remember watching a video of him in like a 1v6 and it took them forever to get a kill.
Im pretty sure i ended the match with negative score tbf, as he kept railing/rocketing me off the edges a lot as we played the armor/weapons denial game.
I was never a primary 1vs1 player though, tdm and ctf was my thing.
Daniel Murphy
>I've gotten a lot less competitive as I've gotten older.
All it is.
Justin Sanchez
Where's the cheapest place to get UT2k4?
Angel Phillips
piratebay
Brayden Fisher
My reflexes got a bit worse, but I am much better than before.
Joseph Jackson
>cs >king of twitch bait
Dylan Mitchell
i feel I shouldnt have a voice here, 25 here.
my dad used to be competitive nes player.
hes in his 60's now. My dad plays overwatch. He tells me, you will never stop being good at competitive games until you reach the ripe age of 58.
please dont feel too discouraged Sup Forums, your competitive prime lasts from ages 25-45. after that, you begin to slow down. please continue playing and practicing!
Evan Kelly
62, doing much better than ever. Recently I've been playing Killing Floor and I've just unbinded the sights keybind and I can headshot shit across the map at a constant without needing any indication similar to a crosshair or ironsight.
Hunter White
None of you faggots got worse. Younger gamers just got better.
Bentley Sanchez
>Younger gamers just got better the vast majority of the game industry being massively casualized leads me to believe otherwise. i mean, arena shooters which were the highest skill FPS games in the entire genre were killed off in favor of regen health crap like call of duty
Aaron Sanders
lol, i haven't seen a "good" sub 20 rts player outside of korea since like 2005.
Aaron Lewis
26 y/o and my hands just aren't as coordinate as they were when I was 16
makes it hard for me to get back into Gunz
Luke Collins
31 here. I still play Titanfall and Overwatch once in a while, but I tend to stay away from twitch shooters these days. Reflexes begin diminishing around 24, and they will continue to do so the rest of your life. It sucks, but there's really nothing you can do about it. The upside is I've gone back to to single player games, rather than playing mostly online multiplayer stuff like I did most of last gen, and doing that has kind of reminded me why I fell in love with video games in the first place, all those years ago. I think a game like Horizon maybe wouldn't have interested me 10 years ago, but I'm almost at 100% on that game now, and I'm really enjoying it.
Joseph White
I'm 27. Still at the top of leaderboards in every FPS I play. I usually play Battlefield 1 and Overwatch right now. In Battlefield 1 I tend to always get above 60 kills and less than 5 deaths. In Overwatch I'm 4500 Skill Rating. Reflexes getting worse and all that is a meme used by people who either never were good at games to begin with or they stopped playing games for several years and when they came back to it they can't get back to their earlier skill level.
Joshua Lee
>plays titanfall, overwatch, and horizon you are part of the reason why the modern industry is so fucking casual
Luke Edwards
28 here. Got the remaster, shits pretty gud.
Adrian Bennett
again. I used to play tons of H2/H3 when they came out. Shit was amazing. I also remember the kid that installed UT2k4 on the computers at school and we'd play that when we were done with our work.
Now, I'm ok at the current games. I suck at CS (SEM), I'm ok with H5 (best I can do is Plat 1 in SWAT), and I really don't have any interest in MOBAs or RTSs.
Shit sucks, yo.
Cooper Young
>no Zone
Grayson Green
30 here, and I'm just as good, if not better, as I was when I was a kid.
You might want to actually tell your doctor about a noticeable decline in reaction times that young, that could be an early symptom of some really, really bad shit.
Thomas Brooks
you're probably just out of practice and letting your age get to you
Samuel Gray
It's true. I'm 30 and i feel it as well. I remember how good i was as a kid at Quake, UT, CS etc. I can still do well today, but it's not like it was. At times i feel like i know where i am, i am looking at it, but my hand won't move fast enough or coordinate.
On the flipside, you get more gaming awareness, you know how to use gameplay mechanics to your advantage. So i guess aging in vidya is just like aging in irl for many of us. What you lose in reflexes and natural ability you make up for with experience and age.
A game i noticed i have been absolutely destroying people in lately, is For Honor, despite it being pretty twitch based.
Chase Bell
or maybe you are just more lucky than the majority of us.
