So if I want to start playing PS games would my best bet be getting a ps3? Are the new ones backwards compatible?

They're only backwards compatible with PS1 games. If you want to play PS2 on the PS3 you'll have to rely on digital ports and HD remasters.
Also, even though PS3 is region free that doesn't apply to PS1 games (even digital) because of reasons, keep that in mind if you're planning on importing stuff. That being said, the PS3 is a good machine to start.
If it has 4 usb ports on the front, it's backwards compatible 1-3.
that's all you need to know
The fat 60gb one is the one I want I think. They are quite expensive though.
>They are quite expensive though.
they are also at a 50% chance of working properly.
biggest problem (I encounter working at a game shop) is the disk drive and power supply.
the disk drive can eat disks and not spit them back out and the power supply/plug often doesn't work.
buying a refurbished one might be a smart option because it's been repaired.
Just get an ps2 for gen 6 games and emulate ps1
Emulate PS2 games
Get the original PS3 with 80GB (hard drive can be upgraded). It has 4 usb ports on the front, more slots hidden next to the disc drive, PS2 and PS1 full backwards compatibility as well as just better, only issue is that it's more prone to fucking up unlike the newer consoles.
Did sony fuck something up?
The first PS3 and its launch was one big fuck up
Yeah I was looking into getting a backwards compatible PS3. But if they are prone to failure then I'd rather not take the risk.
All machines play PS1 discs
does ps4 play ps1?
It doesn't play anything extra except streaming and PS2 Classics specifically built for PS4.
>and PS2 Classics specifically built for PS4.
explain
PS2 games ported to work on PS4
Star Ocean 3 for example
Don't fall for the backwards compatible meme. Just get a hackable slim (not super slim).
so basically, ps4 games work on ps4?
for some reason I thought you were saying ps2 developers anticipated the ps4 and somehow planned ahead
store.playstation.com
Everything here is exclusive to PS4 because jew, the more expensive ones have platinum trophies which cheaper ones do not.
If you're more into PS1 and PS2 games just buy a PS2 slim. If you wanna play PS3 games too, buy a PS3 as well. Unless you go hunting you won't be able to get a good PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility that has a low chance of dying on you.
If you have a half decent computer.
>mfw 6th gen consoles are coming to their proper deaths
>PS2 and PS1 full backwards compatibility
They'll run everything, but the emulation is still not 100% accurate and there are minor bugs and inconsistencies.
Better than buying a good enough PC to emulate MGS2 and 3
Im pretty sure sony has an actual ps2 emulator
these ps2 games on the sp4 arent ports. theyre the exact same game, even down to the ps2 splash screen
The MGS HD Collection already exists and is pretty much superior to the originals and definitely to emulating on PC.
Anyway I just recon it's easier and cheaper to find actual PS2 decks than hunt down those early PS3 models.
I'll go on record and say that a hacked original model backwards compatible PS3 is the greatest console of all time. Bonus points if you upgrade the hard drive to 1TB.
>can play any PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP game for free
>can pirate DLC and digital-only games as well
>can play translation patches for Japan exclusives (ie, Tales of Vesperia PS3)
>can install Retroarch and emulate pretty much anything before 5th gen
>free online
>even if you're retarded enough to get banned, you can unban yourself
The only problem is how prone they are to YLOD.
If you want to play PS games your best bet is a PC for emulation, then a PS3.
Consoles have minor bugs and inconsistencies too plus bad performance.
I really can't agree with that, the collection isn't that good.
How hard are hacked ones to find?
If you live in the third world it's harder to find unhacked ones.
PS2 is still being sold.
Speaking of PS3. The fan of my PS3 Slim is so loud I'm afraid the thing is gonna take off and fly to Mexico one of these days.
