The $2 Million raised through kickstarter was used to hire and fund The Odd Gentlemen in order develop Hiveswap. They threw up some quick Unity Engine "concept" in order to tease and basically did fucking nothing with it for a while. Later on they were contacted by Sierra Entertainment and asked if they wanted to be brought on to make a new King's Quest, and when presented with such a golden egg they instantly took it on.
Now here's where the crux of the situation appears. You see, Andrew Hussie doesn't know shit about being a video game publisher. When he brought The Odd Gentlemen on to develop the game, the contract was nothing more than an honors system which gave the developers full control of the money and dues. This meant that when the time came to do King's Quest, the devs just dropped Hiveswap then and there with no obligations to either finish the first project or to return the kickstarter money back to Hussie. A year passes and Hussie asks where's the game, the devs just ask "What game? We're working on King's Quest, don't bother us."
This was a huge fuckup for Hussie and a dickmove from The Odd Gentlemen, so they went their separate ways. Hussie was too ashamed to tell anybody this (also part of the contract was that he can't tell anybody), so none of this information was revealed until one of his friends posted it on a blog that has since been taken down as well as a >Polygon video interview with The Odd Gentlemen where the devs talk about how they dropped Hiveswap for King's Quest. The long hiatus that Homestuck was on happened because Hussie was busy trying to assemble a new dev team and a new Hiveswap with himself managing things personally. The stuff OP has posted is the result of that.
Also the new King's Quest sucked dick, it was just a mediocre Telltale ripoff that played nothing like the classic series.

Hussie's at fault for most of this to be honest.

He created a terrible contract, didn't keep an eye on the team at all, and didn't involve himself in the development at all. Even after assembling a team of ragtag concept artists off tumblr to make his videogame he's still mostly hands-off with it, not even writing the damn thing himself and leaving it to a guy he hired for being funny on twitter. It's obvious he's just a silly webcomic author who was put in charge of a massive brand and had no idea how to do that.

I've also heard that he changed the team a second time after that too. It's no wonder they're having so much trouble assembling pre-existing concept art into a 3 hour point and click adventure in unity given how it's been managed.
