The problem is, people don't know how to immersive themselves properly. Are you the voice inside a characters head making the decisions for them, do you see through the eyes of the character thus immersive yourself in their form / be the character, are you just the grand manipulator of all their actions from up above since you assume control out of their in game realistic bound capabilities.
Honestly, if I use female characters I always assume I am controlling her to do what I want, I don't self insert, even the choices I make is because I say do it, so the character does.
