This, probably. From any Western outlet, anything instantly recognizable from a Nintendo standpoint that does even remotely well will generally be on GOTY lists. Persona 5 might receive a couple mentions, but reviewers and outlets will largely state Zelda as GOTY because of its appeal on reviewers nostalgia.
Persona barely became relevant maybe 5 years ago. Western audiences don't give enough of a shit. Damn shame too, I like Persona way more.

My top two games of the year thus far. It would be delusional though to think Zelda won't win GOTY on almost every site. Persona is great but these things are done by a vote by all the "journalists" at these websites and I doubt anybody other than the person they picked to review Persona has even touched the game.

Persona 5 is the better game, but between the two BoTW would more likely of the two to win GOTY. GOTY award will be between BoTW, Shadow of War, Horizon, and Mass Effect Andromeda

Honestly Persona 5 loses a lot of steam during the Okumura stuff, especially when they're in Hawaii. The game goes from a 9/10 to a 7/10 and flip-flops between the two throughout the course of the story.

Persona 5 is the peak of Persona gameplay, but the characters in Persona 4 actually felt more like your friends than in Persona 5.

I don't really like P5. It makes me miss P3. I'm not really connecting with any of these characters or the situation. The main party is kind of dumb and they don't really feel like people who would hang out with each other, and the fact that they're basically fighting for vanity is off-putting. Then nearly every social link is resolved by brainwashing some cartoonishly evil jerks so that people you like don't have to deal with their own problems.

I stopped playing at the Hawaii trip and I really don't feel the motivation to get back into it.

Any game that actually had the story contained in the game itself.

What 2B and 9S's relationship actually is. That's the core of the entire story and it's completely misused as a plot-twist at the end. The game loses so much of the poignancy it could've had.

P4 felt like it had less useless characters in the main party. Chie and Yukiko were the main two that stopped being relevant halfway through the story, but like half the cast of P5 stops being relevant after their dungeon is complete. Morgana is way fucking better than Teddie though.

I didn't even pay attention to that until I replayed the game. I think you just spend too much time with shippers or w/e. And I think it's fine for what it was, explains much of 2B's behavior throughout Route A/B.

Joker, Futaba, Morgana, Goro and to lesser extent Makoto are the only relevant characters, the rest could not exist and the game would proceed the exact same.

Also how was Kanji relevant in 4 past his arc, I honestly don't remember if he was or not.

Hear me out. Nintendo objectively hasn't had a "must have" console since the Gamecube. The best Nintendo game in years has been BotW which is mediocre at best. The consoles and controllers are designed to look like Fisher-Price toys and any porn of the characters always involves the heros getting cucked by the villains(Bowser and Peach, Zelda and Ganon/dorf) or sexualized children like Splatoon or sheer amount of bestiality.

I've played much much more Zelda than p5, and I even had to pick up a ps3 specifically for it. If there was a fem mc is Persona 5 this would be a lot harder for me to decide.

IIRC, Zelda in BOTW is hundreds of years old.

Persona is a very good entry in a series of JRPGs that very popular and I'd say with good reason. Persona 5 is a great game.

But Breath of the Wild is a Mario 64 level gamechanger, just with emergent gameplay instead of 3D movement.
If this was any old Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, or Skyward Sword style OOT clone Persona 5 could blow it out of the water. But it's a LOT more than that.
Unless another game this year manages to fundamentally change how we look at and approach game design like BOTW did it's literally no contest for GOTY. Breath of the Wild. Persona 5 could literally be the best JRPG ever but it's working on already treaded territory, BOTW showed us something new.

Just because most console shit open world games have pop-in doesn't mean it's not a valid complaint.
