it was a lot people's first RE game, that's why.
The G A M E P L A Y
was THAT good
Refined gameplay, memorable moments, gameplay styles variety.
>basically started the third person qte fests
You have Shenmue to thank for that, actually desu
>great environments
>great weapons
>fun bosses
>super spooky regenerator
>tons of extra content for replay value
couldn't tell ya
This.
Playing the game was just so fucking amazing, I went back and played it again a few days ago and it still holds the fuck up, and the feedback you get from shooting enemies feels amazing.
The only problem I have with it is the control layout feels a bit outdated since it was made for GC.
QTEs are just unnecessary, but nothing more than that. Nostalgiafags need to get a grip and grow up.

Fuck man
it's fun, that's how
fucking fun as shit
Capcom managed to perfectly thread the line between dark and goofy. It was like playing one of those cheesy B horror movies.
It was a lucky accident because they never managed to do this again.
There isn't a single design decision that is inherently bad for a game in existence. RE4 is finely tuned machine where every part of the gameplay and design compliments each other.
It's amazing because it used so many mechanics that became trends, but other devs had no regard for how they fit into the big picture like RE4's team did. That's why it's retarded when people blame RE4 for "muh ruined decade of gaming."
What did RE4 had that TEW didnt?
Why did TEW failed?
What's wrong with RE4's set pieces? They were pretty dang good aside from those QTEs
leon didn't talk to himself throughout the whole damn game
Three ways.
1. It's linear, so you aren't wasting fucking time running around.
2. They handled the items you get very well.
3. The progression of the game felt perfect.
>feedback
This. I find it similar to God Hand. You FEEL when you hit somebody, and they react to every your action.
The crossbow bolts meant the whole game hinged on a single weapon, your melee was underpowered so it limited your combat options to just "run" when conserving ammo, and the game is balanced for stealth to be an option. In theory more options are better, but the amount of enemies thrown at you plus the lack of any ammo make the game's combat really frustrating, and boss fights feel like ammo dumps more than actual things to look forward to.
Not that user, but Leon did talk to himself a lot. I havent played TEW.
>be a pcbro
>play RE4 right after it's released on PC (2007)
>"oh cool, this plays almost like a pc game but not as good"
Meanwhile peasants rave about it ten fucking years later, lmao. Quake's gameplay blows this out of water and it was made a decade before, but you filthy shiteaters wouldn't know, would you?
Assuming you aren't entranced by the gameplay, the game itself is merely above average. It's also the ground zero of everything why current RE is a shitshow. Hell I'm playing CVX on PS2 right now and holy shit is it ever better than 4.
>I'm playing CVX on PS2 right now and holy shit is it ever better than 4.
6/10 a little too obvious but still good
The BAR is my favorite (other than the Red9) for this exact reason.
More like they never tried it again. RE5 was serious as all fuck. After the departure of Mikami, RE went to shit.
played re since the beginning, re4 is just a great game, friend made me play the first bit and i bought it full price the next day, bought in 2 other forms since then, great game
Started with 3 then 2 then 1, then REmake. Loved all of them. Then RE4 came and blew my mind, becoming one of the most groundbreaking games I've ever played
user, you should have played the classic RE's to know what it feels like when RE4 came out.

If they were old enough to remember the early 2000s, they'd remember everyone was complaining about how stale the formula was after Zero/CV. Even though people were reluctant to RE4 changing the formula the way it did, almost everyone agreed they were ready for a breath of fresh air.
he didn't really though, outside of cutscenes, which are to be expected. Most of leon's dialogue during gameplay was just voiceless text-on-screen.
I remember the reviews. People did want a chance. Some were reluctant but Resident Evil 4 was beloved once it was actually released. Revitalized interest in the franchise.
What are those QTEs you're talking about? what does QTE mean?
Which version of RE4 is the best to play?
this was made into a smartphone game
really good
UHD on PC
They are two different games. It's like the idiots that compared RE5 and Gears of war 2. RE4 has a different approach to it's gameplay. Also TEW didn't fail. It's just people that wanted it to be RE4 or REmake were disappointed with a different type of game.

Also, why there is a lot of Spic videos about REs? I thought they only like KOF
Wii version
Play it with a gamecube/classic controller if you do this. The motion controls are great, but fuck the game's balance.
Are you a dolt? The motion controls are so fun, it's no worse than playing on M&KB.
crackcom games are very famous here.spic weebs love monster hunter and megaman
I don't advocate M&KB either. Leon's supposed to have shaky aim, and the wiimote/mouse trivialize a lot of the challenge. I think it's a great way to experience the game after the first playthrough, but I wouldn't recommend it for the first run.

>Decided to finally beat the game on professional last week
I never knew such bullshit before in my life.
5-4 on professional was the only time I've ever thrown a controller in my life. I have no desire to ever repeat that. Congrats, user!
Spic (Mexican) here, a few reasons RE games are so popular here are:
-During the late 90's the PS1 was easy as fuck to mod and piracy was rampant on it, even little kids with no internet conection could get pirated copies of games for like, 20 pesos (which was worth around 2 dollars back then) so everyone and their mother played at least one of the classic RE games since they were violent games for the badass big boys and they wanted to see what the big fuzz was about.
-I think it was one of the first games to be fully translated to spanish in america. Similar to Metal Gear Solid.
-The movies are super popular down here, they even get aired on local channels pretty often.
So good.

Nope, God of War
>>the poster boy of production hell
>Duke Nukem
>Final Fantasy
>Kingdom Hearts
The game
is fun
If it's not fun
why bother?
Those fucking turrets man, no to mention I had little to no fucking ammo. Never again indeed.
It's a really fun game
>It's linear
There's a lot of backtracking throughout the game
>>radical shift in just about everything about the series before hand
Only plebs think that RE wasn't about blasting zombies away with excess of ammo.
not him but they trivialize everything about the game because the only remotely hard thing you do is aiming. it's like playing with cheats on
>RE5 was serious as all fuck
Nah, it went full anime if anything
Dota 2 is not fun and I have been playing it for years haha
>Also TEW didn't fail. It's just people that wanted it to be RE4 or REmake were disappointed with a different type of game.
The entire marketing campaign was "A SURVIVAL HORROR GAME FROM THE MASTER OF SURVIVAL HORROR, SURVIVAL HORROR IS BACK" when it was really jut a third person shooter
>the poster boy of production hell
Out of any game that would hold that title, how the fuck is RE4 one of them?
>RE5
>Serious
youtube.com
Yes, linearly backtracking
lmao, try pistol only no upgrades, pleb
RE7 was marketed as Survival horror and it's just as action horror as all the other RE7 in the last tens years. So was Dead space 1 and and they where action games too. It would be dumb not to use that as a selling point.
TEW had some weird tonal issues with it. The first part of the game is pretty much pure stealth, but the later parts wanna be resident evil 4, but with less ammo. Hopefully 2 fixes that issue.
>controls are difficulty
Stop with this meme
The pacing. The game always knew right when to throw a boss at you or slow things down to let you catch your breath, or straight up change the rules of combat (put you in a minecart, protect Ashley, now you're fighting bugs, etc.). Resident Evil fucking FLOWS like a good jazz piece.
Why on earth would I do that to myself?
>linearly backtracking
what did he mean by this?
Likeable if goofy characters across the whole cast, and a very simple narrative where no matter what dumb shit was happening, you always knew what you were doing and what your goal was. Also only like two enemies with instant kill attacks.
What was so hard exactly? I went professional on my second time through and 11 playthrough's later I've never not bothered with professional. Honestly been a while though, my memory has faded somewhat. I remember the most trouble I ever had was when you were in the castle and there's that big room with the two fountains and tons of enemies attack you. Either that or when you first get to the island on disc two and have to deal with miniguns for the first time.
Maybe hes playing a version that runs at a higher framerate and fucks up the damage values for a lot of attacks.
That the game didn't have very many paths so you're always essentially going from point A to point B with no way of deviating. There's what, like four or five instances where you even have the choice to go a different route and they're all for extra treasure and set you back on the main path almost immediately.
TEW didn't fail. If RE4 is a A/A+ TEW is a C+/B-.
It just had alot of bullshit with instant kill set piece segments out the ass and some awful levels here and there. Otherwise it didn't do much wrong. It was enjoyably challenging id say Nightmare was harder then Pro mode on RE4 by a solid degree and combat was alittle more fun although RE4 was far less wonky and had a worthwhile melee.
Shenmue may have done it first but RE4 popularized it.
Is that a thing? Resident Evil 4 was never too hard once you got used to using your knife and knowing how to crowd control. Get a handgun/TMP for general head/knee shots to set up melee and beyond that mix it up however you want. Could never go wrong with that shotgun that holds 100 rounds or fucking around with the dart gun.
It wasn't that hard. Only the first rooms of the island, the final room with Mike, and U3/"It" were hard.
Big room with hoisting Ashley up to lower the bridge wasn't that bad.
Gameplay was fun. Market wasn't glutted with similar games.
Uncharted 4 shares a lot of similarities, but it's for babbies
give me ONE (1) reason why RE8 shouldnt be this
youtu.be
Beat the game as many times as I have and pro becomes easy as fuck. I ended the game with like 10 full heals last time I played.

owo what's this??

Why not just emulate?
you must be a retard to have problems with that thing
i think this is why the melee attacks are so good, they're not glory kill style finishers that take up seconds of time to kill an enemy just from pressing one button, they're a legitimately useful combat tactic to stagger one foe and usually a group of others, and they feel so good to do. everything about that system complements the playstyle
Not really. You can play it without it all the way through.(except for the tutorial) It's just like Classic REs but replacing running with Stealth+hiding. Early in the games of RE it encourages running from enemies until you build up your armory and then you are killing Monsters in every room. Same thing with TEW.
>Is that a thing?
Yeah. Things like the dog's tentacle flailing will basically one-shot you at 60 FPS/Professional. It's not the most notable thing though since damage is preventable and usually well-telegraphed in RE4,
Ahhh, I remember the many hours I spent here.
Puzzles are one of the most patrician touch on games and make any game 10 times better for me.

BRING IT TO THE SWITCH.
Help me PCbros
ever since I got my MSI laptop I can't get this game to run, it just runs in an invisible window, than automatically shuts itself down
Its not an OS issue since I played this on w10 before. I can get the game to run in a small black square if I set fullscreen to 0 in Config.txt
Because it has decent combat, inventory management that's fun and not a total fucking chore that nobody wants to deal with, and doesn't use a shitty fucking isometric camera like the previous REs.
You have to be at least 21 to post here.
it's good game... but 2bh REmake is much better imo, and I'm usually someone that's a huge sucker for action gameplay.
REmake is just a ridiculously beautiful game with incredible balance. I can't get over how good its atmosphere and art style is, along with the amazing feeling of dread the game fills you with. The non-linearity is brilliant and how the game's world opens up to you metroidvania style is fantastic. I played it for the first time in my life about two weeks ago. First beat it on Normal with Jill, then Hard with Chris, then Survivor with Jill, pretty much back to back playthroughs. I don't know what it is but I absolutely fell in love with the game and it instantly became one of my all time favourites. It was also such a huge reminder of how fucking dumbed down video games have become since its release.
After beating it on survivor I actually felt sad it was over. I was craving more of a game of its quality so downloaded RE4 but unfortunately it just doesn't hit the same mark. I get it, apples and oranges, the games are very different, but to me RE4 just doesn't touch the satisfaction that REmake gave me to play through. Don't get me wrong, RE4 is a very fun action game, but my god I absolutely love REmake. What a fucking game.
I want more games on REmake's level. I've played through RE2 and Code Veronica X, is there anything else? I'm gonna try emulating RE3 for PSX soon.
all you have to do is create a basic and satisfying combat loop and people who don't know any better will eat it right up, no matter how insanely repetitive you make the back half of your game
Generation defining gameplay (over the shoulder shooter)
i bet you like it when a game forces you to do simon says
Sorry dude, every RE before 4 is a massive pile of shit with easy puzzles and braindead combat with autoaim because they know the isometric camera is trash. The correct way to play the game is to avoid literally every enemy in the entire game by baiting out attacks and running past them for like two hours until you're done. What great game design, I sure am glad I'm playing this pile of shit rather than literally any other video game right now.
I feel you, user. While everybody sucks RE4 dick by saying it saved the series, to my eyes it was only a generic TPS with "zombies" in it.
The survival is pretty much gone in 4, you get items everywhere, you don't need to think things through, you don't need to plan, you simply move forward killing everything that moves, it's completely linear.
I know it's a different style of gameplay, but fuck this, RE 1 - 3 were far more enjoyable to me.
Try RE3, RE0 (there's a chance you will dislike this one), and also RE7 brought back the "i need to think where i should go now" type of feeling. You should also try the original RE1, REmake is better imo, but besides the voice acting the original one is good.
Ok lil dude.
The voice acting and live action cutscenes are the only reason to play the originals
