Also play the demo and check the system requirements. Good idea to check online stats to see if game is dead or just badass.
Wait a couple of years before buying, so the games and hardware are cheaper and the bugs have been ironed out.

The answer is usually no for both.
I never buy digital copies of games for more than 20 dollars unless I need to have the game right now.

Skim user reviews and look for complaints that appear frequently, then decide if the given complaint is one that applies to my tastes. Watch commentary-less gameplay of it and make an educated guess on if i like games like that then I go for it. Generally I enjoy the games I get
