What is never said on this subject is that learning an instrument doesn't create any talent which isn't already there. You can read sheet music as well as you want - if you don't have a keen perception of sounds, chords, progression, improvisation, and structure, you won't ever be a good player regardless.

Personally, after I started reading more books I noticed my grammar improving, my vocabulary widening and my general skills in both writing and character creating getting better.
So I dunno about making you smarter, but it can definitely help you in many areas.
