Neither are tedious at all. People vastly overstate how annoying YHVH's Universe is. The Sun in DDS2 is far more annoying and the Akarana Corridor and The Cathedral can be more annoying if you don't have Estoma.

They're all canon, and they sometimes connect, but there is no overarching story. It's all in a mulitverse.
Aside from The Sun, I enjoyed them too, but they were more tedious than YHVH's Universe, where only the first Brane was annoying at all.

Most of these games are standalone besides direct sequels. Every game is canon and has different stories. Personally I recommend SMTIV or Digital Devil Saga 1&2. If you can handle dated games starting with SMT1 and going in release order is also good.

Personally I'd recommend either Persona 5 or Nocturne
P5 is the best Persona-style gameplay, and Nocturne is the most vanilla gameplay out of all SMT games (ie no stupid bullshit like Smirks from IV, and no sweeping gameplay changes like some of the more out-there spin-offs)
