It's not related to age, it's more or less meditation, entering the zone is essentially achieving temporary nothingness, just like in the Matrix you aren't supposed to think about shit and clear your mind. Your brain then performs whatever current activity you're doing at peak performance, hence entering the "zone". You process information faster, time seems to slow down a bit, you can react better and so on.
