I'm not sure if Call of Duty is a proper comparison, since it isn't a yearly release for easy money. Unless the events count as a replacement.

There is no need for yearly releases with the modern type competitive games, just sell items, add characters and maps occasionally, re-balance and maintain the game.
Why put the financial capital into creating a whole new game when you can live off one investment indefinitely? CoD is the old model of fps.
Early access with tweak and regular updates are the new model much more cost effective too.

The gameplay is solid and it's fun enough with friends who aren't complete tryhards. Staying away from comp is advisable.
I don't think OW it the greatest FPS of all time, I think it's fun. Not because e-celebs or -sports, not because there's black people or 'waifus XD', but because it's fun enough that you can sink in a match or ten a day.
