I've been thinking about replaying ToS on dolphin. Should I do it? I can't imagine it's aged well but I haven't played any of the newest Tales games either besides the Berseria demo.

I don't feel it's outdated mechanically, and cell shading is pretty timeless. There are a lot of parts that feel like a drag when you do a replay though.

I heard they messed up the PC port? 30fps/cel shading gone etc.

Not that guy but I don't think "bastardization" of the previous game's characters was one of its issues at all, which actually says a lot since the sequel has many, many flaws.
I wouldn't recommend it without "buts", however I did find it pretty captivating afterall. Onto the issues though.
It was rushed and/or not produced without much care and it shows. It's very short, there's no overworld (you instant-travel by choosing points on a map), and you can tell many features were planned but scrapped. Like Richter is a character very much build up to be a main character and eventual party member and he would have joined your party in any other game, but not this one (spoilers). Instead, your only "real" party members throughout the entire game are Emil and Marta. The rest of the slots are filled with characters from the first game, however they don't level like normal characters and have a fairly restrictive level cap, unlike Emil and Marta. Other characters you can normally levels are monsters - fucking random monsters you catch and train like fucking Pokemon. The system is honestly fun enough, but nothing groundbreaking or interesting enough to make up for the lack of real party members, something a lot of fans took an issue with.
Considering you don't mind spoiled, another major issue is [spoiler[that the hook for the first half of the game is Lloyd turning evil but it just turned out to be an imposter. Though this did lead to some nice developments on ocassion (like Zelos, my favourite character, being a total bro and pretty much the only one who said from the very beginning that there's no way Lloyd would turn evil, there must be something fishy going on), the lasting impression is that it's a lame bait & switch to sell copies and again a result of rushed development, just a not particularly well thought out storyline[/spoiler]. Another problem is that your main character, Emil, is a totally whiny bitch and fairly unlikeable for most of the game.

Now with all that said, why would I still recommend it? Because despite all this crap, there is are some endearing characters in it. ToS was great and it's nice to see more of its world and characters, even if not necessarily in the best form. The cutscenes are mocapped and pretty, the battle system is solid as usual and probably the best part of the game. a straight up upgrade in every regard from the previous game. And I think I might be a bit alone in this, but I do like the romance between Emil and Marta. It starts out extremely forced but over the course of the game develops into something believable and genuine which is fairly rare in video games.

You probably won't like the story or characters nearly as much. The graphics actually aged really well though, and the gameplay is typical Tales shit (if you don't mind playing one then none of them will ever bother you).

it's based on the ps2 port, which was 30 fps normally. That's why all the recent enhanced re-releases of it have been 30 fps. Only GC has 60.

Increase in development costs leads to longer waits between releases.

i have played the game so many times, i have burned all the puzzles into my mind.

Tales of Zestiria happened, and was so bad in a lot of ways management had to shuffled around and internally the standard for the games needed to checked. Berseria was the first new game under this new cycle. It's obviously going to pick up again since Berseria was considered a success.

The real problem with ToS2 is that it needs to be it's own game, it's a game that shouldn't have been a sequel. The hook for the game would have worked better if we were dealing with a new world and fresh characters.

No, the real problem with ToS2 was that the characters were garbage and the combat system was not satisfying. Every enemy is a dumb damage sponge and in the endgame stuff fights last longer than they should. The twilight palace boss was just 10 minutes of free running and slapping him occasionally.

Zelos is the opposite of entitled or selfish. Literally his entire character arc is about how he doesn't want to be the chosen and would much rather live a normal, carefree life. He doesn't feel entitled to anything. And how is he selfish, by the powers of canon, he is the one doing to the most for the success of the group.

Your shit is outdated. The Tales community reveres Vesperia and Bersiera. Symphonia only gets praise because it was the one of the only JRPGs available on GameCube.

That's only what gave it extra credit at the beginning, people still loved Symphonia after it was ported to every platform known to man.

Because it's solid. It's an excellent entry in the franchise that still holds up today. Some of the newer games like Abyss or Vesperia do the combat better, but as long as you don't mind the cliches (which if you're into this series I imagine you can't be) it's a fun ride. Good characters carry the predictable story, and some totally kick ass tunes.

I mean it's not perfect, but nothing in this franchise is. My favorite game is Phantasia which has a character who can literally fly off screen and spam spells freely so as long as you have TP gels you can't lose.

I'm not saying Zestiria problems didn't come from bad management, because it ultimately did, they attempted to rush a game out the door long before it was even finished, and didn't stop the staff disagreements so when some of the devs raised a stink and caused confusion they ultimately hurt the amount of dev allotted to the game, there was no one there to tell them to shut up and sit down (which to be fair was Baba's job).

Berseria and Zestiria were both created at the same time by the same people, the only really done differently was that the producer of Berseria noticed that he some of he staff was raising a stink and promptly shut it down.

But there were other problems too the game system was just hard to implement and the staff needed more time to render more characters, hell they didn't even get time to finish the rendering for Hedalf's human form. And the battle system wasn't finished either.

The series feels like its going on the right direction for the first time since Vesperia.

It's mainly nostalgia at this point. People remember the plot and character lines but the gameplay aged like milk and so did the mechanics and dungeon puzzles. Even Abyss aged better than Symphonia
