So was this series ever actually about pirates? Or is it like Naruto where they just call themselves the thing but are basically magicians on steroids?

There are real pirates. The Strawhats are a jolly band of outlaws who get into shenanigans. If you compare them to the Kidd or Blackbeard pirates, they seem like saints.

The Straw Hats have done actual piracy just 2 times: in both Skypeia and Thriller Bark they stole a lot of treasure (altough the Skypeia one is debatable). They consitently do a lot of terrorism, though. Thats why they are labeled as pirates.

To be fair, Naruto didn't create the concept of Ninpou which has been a recurring trope long before that. Also, the history of the series' Ninja Wars have shown how the series would be like if they were "realistic" ninja.

So it's not like they were being blind retards about it.

The pirates theme is absolutely present BUT it takes a backseat to le superpowers battles that you see in all these battle shounen.

There must be 200+ anime which are all basically X-Men The Anime. A cast of characters and all of them have a defining ability/power.

One Piece is already somewhat unique in that Oda uses the chapter title pages to tell short stories around other characters in the setting. It's actually quite a nice touch.

Yeah it's not anywhere near as good as pw3 or even Zelda though

both kata and trebol are paramecia, with the former being a special paramecia due to the properties of mochi itself

Haki is power level and Katakuri has a higher power level. Trebol was a paramecia, his real body was hidden in places Luffys punches never hit.

Okay, I could normally buy Trebol being Paramecia but the thing is Law cut him into fucking pieces during their fight and he seemed to be pretty okay. Hell, he survived being mutilated for several minutes because Law's attack specifically stopped him from reforming for a bit.

Whoever thought grinding for gold coins was a good idea deserves to be shot. I was having tons of fun with the different characters until I'd done all of Dream Long and still had a million gold coins to collect.

Not really, basically if you can turn into what you make you're a Logia. Blackbeard was an exception due to the nature of his fruit but otherwise it was pretty clear what fruits are and aren't Logia. At least until Trebol showed up, anyway.

galdino and magellan's fruits are only two examples of paramecia which powers have been the focus of discussion like trebol and katakuri are nowdays. galdino especially since the dude literally sweats wax when he's suffering from the heat of impel down level 4
it has been established that what differentiates a logia and a paramecia is whether your fruit has an elemental power or not, that's all to it. that's why oda retconned katakuri's from being a logia to a special paramecia: mochi is an artificial product and can't be found in a natural state

Huh, alright. Well that answers that question for me.

The middle panel of the second page could've been flipped, but really it's the fault of Oda preferring more panels than his contemporaries. It works great for getting more done each chapter and making them feel much longer, but they've consistently caused problems as the fights have gotten more and more populated by background people since the time skip.

I dunno man. I've played those games and while Capcom provides a pretty nice and different alternative, I still think PW has the best take on the formula. The expansive move sets speak to me.

Just wish PW3 had more balance in its roster. There are a few characters who you'll really have to work for (Perona, Moria, Crocodile, both versions of Chopper) while others that are practically invincible or have a flowchart playstyle (Shanks, Whitebeard, Fujitora, Enel).
