I think Gamergate was based on good ideas and intentions but was doomed since it was too sincere and decentralized at the same time.

Any opponent could attack it too easy by evading it's arguments and portraying itself as the victim, while not being far from that truth either since they either inflicted harassment on themselves or could use any newfag's verbal attack on line to divert attention from their own mistakes.

I never understood the anti-Gamergate hassle either. There were a few threads of it up and running back in the day but it was by no means as bad as gets back in the day. I was surprised to see a Sup Forums-born movement being stamped out in it's own community.

To me it was the final nail in the coffin of what we were 10 years ago. But that's my perspective. I understand those completely that just want to game and leave politics out. It's jus that when you get older you start caring more and more about the world around you.

The hilarity of all of this is that 'gamergate' had the potential to be a legitimate public backlash against the poor anti-consumerist practices being utilized by large publishing studios. It had the potential to point out the long insidious nature of 'game reviewing' and 'previews' and how, with the death of the Demo, relationships between game reviewers and publishers are still far too deep. It could have exposed the shallow shitty yellow journalism that is game news reporting. We could have learned years ago that Valve, Blizzard-Activision, Ubisoft, etc.. Have all been paying less in taxes than their average employees and getting record breaking profits for mechanically simpler and innovation-free products.

Instead it was hijacked quickly by the Left, aided by publishers, to obfuscate the fact that video games have been going to shit for nearly 7 years straight and every time that discussion is about to earnestly occur it becomes politicized.

This began Operation: Disrespectful Nod (e-mailing Kotaku sponsors so they would pull ads), and Kotaku responded with many articles of autistic screeching which took the whole thing public and spawned #GamerGate twitter dick waving.
