Well I was like 13 or 14 back then, had bad dial-up internet and I didn't even bother to keep up with shitty gaming magazines. So I have no idea about the short term reception it had. I suppose it can't have been that bad, probably 4 had worse reception.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!
In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.
SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

-Play in the release order.
-Never play below Normal difficulty.
-Replaying them all is recommended.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting,
-Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors.
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help.

Plus, it's not good to rush SH games. There's tons of replay value in each one of them, and depending on your outcome in first one, the sequels may make less sense.
Reception was good. People didn't really know what to expect, though I was unlucky to get it spoiled by my cousin.

There were a lot of mixed a negative opinions, how SH2 was sooo much better and the series is losing its way. Then SH4 came along and people started to appreciate SH3 more and more.

budget hasnt changed or probably even shrunk for the games themselves while most of the money gets blown out on advertisement.

there are many sad reasons as to why gaming has tanked but fear not, survival horror isnt in such a bad postion if you look hard enough. Dark wood was phenomenal and prey was a really good hybrid. The evil within could be good (cant say much) and there are still many surv horror games like dead space (which im currently replaying). As long as there is some kind of market those games will exists

because making games of this caliber require time, skills, actual effort, and more importantly: money. All elements that the modern AAA industry is not willing to gamble with / totally lacks even, which is why they love to "play it safe" and release & re-release ltieral rehashes of heavily streamlined, brains numbing games these days.
Even many industry veterans, including some TS members, have stated that making a game of this size and detail would be a nightmare to deal with this day and age, which is a big shame.
At the same time, I must question the devs' dedication to the cause, as I've seen tons of great "AA", mod and indie projects totally BTFO of most AAA titles in past few years, with a mere fraction of the budget too.

Tom doesnt like the cult and likes 2 the best. He probably only wanted to remake 2 himself with his own story, got shut down, tried to remake it in HD, couldnt justify only making 1, added SH3 because he probably thought that would be the one people wanted the most. He probably only added SH3, not because it was good or he wanted people to play it, but because he was afraid of the backlash if he DIDNT. he doesnt like any of the originals but 2, and it still upsets me when I think about how he just took it did whatever the hell he wanted to with it because daddy konami gave it to him and he "loves silent hill more than anybody. Not hyperbole, literally everybody." even though he doesnt like 3/4 of the originals.
SH2 is my personal favorite but come the fuck on. 1 and 3 are still god tier. should have at least had 1. Now 1 is in even MORE obscurity. but then again it probably would have been butchered as well.
