You forgot the most damning thing of all, which is that stats have nothing to do with why he died. If you spam left click with a two-handed hammer you literally tap enemies for 1 damage. All he had to do was hold it for a quarter of a second and any of those three hits he connected would have 1-shot the crab.

Considering how fucking simple they are it's unheard of for someone to mess up the action elements of Morrowind's combat, but he managed it somehow.
