Even the failure that was the Vita still continues to get support even though it was a critical and commercial failure. How come third party remain loyal to Sony?
Discs, power and popularity
Because Nintendo burned an incredible number of bridges over the years.
PS1 was already a big player on the market and it was pretty much a safe choice.
Nintendo used to demand a percentage of profits plus full rights to games. It left the developers out in the cold, but with the popularity of the SNES, most companies had little choice. When Sony came along, they offered more freedom.
Such as? They're still getting third party support today from the biggest publishes.
>PlayStation
>popular
Something that's overlooked.
Nes and SNES had superior sound capabilities over their direct competition, but N64 couldn't do anything against PS1 CD quality sound.
I like to think the impact on audio was more important than people think.
Cheaper to use discs. Also it was selling better. And apparently nintendo is the greatest to third party developers. I don't know exactly why though. Someone want to fill us in?
>nintendo is the greatest to third party developer
I meant to say nintendo ISNT the greatest
Didn't Sony also develop the sound chip for the SNES? I like to imagine they took their tech away after Nintendo said no to the Nintendo PlayStation CD add-on.
>And apparently nintendo is the greatest to third party developers
all those modern major Japanese 3rd parties made tons of millions on the 8-bit era. They were able to print money then like Nintendo does now. so they feel to owe it to Nintendo for having their fortunes originate from there.
PlayStation home console brand popularity
Third parties have to deal with less bullshit compared with Nintendo
sold the most that gen sweetie
Also broke the kiddie barrier given Sony's reputation as manufacturer of entertainment hardware that adults buy.
I really wish I'd knew what happened that caused third parties to steer away from Nintendo over the years.
are you seriously implying the Playstation wasnt a smash when it released?
Hah you couldn't do an ad like that today I don't think.
>Yamamuchi telling all third party devs that wanted CD's to fuck off
>Nintendo censoring left and right
>high development costs on N64
>Sony opened arms to 3rd party's even funding many games
>games sold better on Playstation
Sony let third parties crash on their sofa, clothed, feed, and cut the rent to half the price that Nintendo was offered. Not to mention all the properties that spawned from PlayStation that are still kicking strong today. That's why Japanese developers in particular are loyal to Sony, and practically give them games for nothing.
>NES and SNES had superior sound capabilities over their direct competition
>no CD audio when Mega Drive and PC Engine did
Also it didn't help that the SNES generally sounded like ass
>the SNES generally sounded like ass
this is some next level bait
Nintendo scared them off with the n64, then every system after had issues that discouraged third parties.
Gamecube: Mini dvd
Wii: weak hardware thus requiring games made specifically for it
Wii U: weak hardware, awkward tablet controller
The Switch is still rather weak, but it's shtick is actually appealing to mainstream gamers, so devs will port when able. Like with Doom, Wolfenstein 2, and L.A. Noire.
The N64 can do good sound too, it's just that you have to compress it all to fit on the cartridges.
...
Excellent player base that leads to sales
Sony doesn't compete with big releases, and help or outright pays for marketing.
Favorable royalty rates.
Your third party games can't sell as good as the games Nintendo makes in their consoles. there is a reason why GTAV is the best selling game in the PS4 and no a first party Sony game. don't you want to see your game in the top charts instead of fucking mario or zelda?
How can nintendo make such wonderous fun games and yet be such dicks on the business side of it?
Looking at the garbage Square shits out every year, it was probably for the better. Really, no one can complain about third parties and their fee fees being hurt by Nintendo. Look at the current industry, it's run by them now and they fucking turned it into shit. If anything they need an even tighter leash than ever before.
>PlayStation
>Power
I guess it'd be better if nintendo was just making software but it would feel so wrong. And I know they'd rather see the company fail then start making games for sony. Them japs man.
SNES generally sounded like ass compared to its competitors,it does have good soundtracks but that's only because of talented composers.
Because 3rd parties make worse games than Nintendo devs, but better games than Sony devs
Why do Nintenbros hate that the PS1 was succesful so much? Jesus Christ
Vindictive Japanese companies. Businessman say business isn't personal, but don't believe. They're still butthurt about Yamauchi's treatment, and they'll take their resentment to the grave. Even after the poor bastard died they still flipped Nintendo the bird last gen.
Pic related is third party, Sony and Nintendo; so much so that PlayStation need only to exist and developers will still make games for the platform regardless.
Nintendo has always been anti-developer. Either they call the shots or bust.
We...don't? I only had a n64 growing up but I have a ps2 now and play ps1 games. A lot of quality on it.
I never liked it. Wasn't into RPGs and multiplayer was trash.
Its competition was Genesis and Tubro Graphix. They had worse sound.
>Either they call the shots or bust
I don't think that's the worst thing by the way. It's bad because it keeps nintendo from being at the top but it's their system. They should be able to call the shots.
PS1 was the Playstation console with the strongest Sony involvment,it wasn't just third party games.
No they haven't unless you like GBA tier muddy shit.
You've done it now. Saying genesis had worst sound will piss off sega nostalgia fags. That's the one thing they like to cling to. That the genesis had better sound.
If developing for Nintendo was such an iron fisted dictatorship back in the early 90's how come nobody really jumped ship to Sega? Genesis was outselling the Super Nintendo for quite a while.
I don't hate it, I'm just indifferent to PS1. To be honest I didn't even know what it was at the time until my beaner neighbors showed me their PlayStation. We played Twisted Metal for a while on it, forgot about it and just went back to Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, etc.
>Company stops supporting Nintendo, it goes to shit immediately
Hmm i wonder why
Forgot pic related
>being this prissy over MHW
I'm amazed how quick you turned. At first nintendo were BFFs with capcom and they'll make DMC5 and Okami 2 WiiU exclusive, now capcom should go bankrupt and sell their IPs to nintendo. In truth, those two in your image should be switched.
>Capcom announcing Capcom 5 with four exclusive games for Gamecube including Resident Evil 4
>Only 4 of those games came out
>Capcom decided to publish those same games onto PS2 which performed even worse on the PS2 than on Gamecube
>This results in Shinji Mikami leaving Capcom
Was this the worst business decision in Capcom's entire history?
Pretty sure Nintendo does fine without crapcom
I'm just saying, being lenient the wants of developers, and not necessarily needs is what put PlayStation on the map. Sony still funds fringe projects today, like 'No Man's Sky' and other dumb ideas just to get people on their platform.
Exactly. I don't think it's a coincidence that some of the best games Capcom made were in the '80s and '90s. True, they did make Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and more Breath of Fire games in the 5th gen, but there was a noticeable drop in quality when it came to Megaman and Megaman X games. Also, Ghosts 'n Goblins died. Over the years they started abandoning even more of their franchises, leaving us with an endless stream of Resident Evil and Street Fighter, with the occasional game like Ghost Trick. Also, Konami goes without saying, they're dead. Third parties need a tight leash, without it they go crazy and shit out whatever trash they want.
>nintendo does fine without [developer not making games for nintendo]
Same song different dance we've heard for years. You loved them making RE R and MH4 for 3DS though.
>Company stops supporting Nintendo, it goes to shit immediately

They have Sony bux. I'm sure they're just fine. It's the rabid fan boys that think Capcom owes them their livelihood that are the worst.
Revelations and MH4 sucked though...
?
>Sega competes against Sony, instead of Nintendo. Things go to shit.
>Sony competes against MS instead of Nintendo. Go to shit.
Coincidental.
Bullshit you don't. I've seen several Nintendo fans online who have said the PS1 had nothing good on it. I was once in a group that was mainly Nintendo orientated, one day the question popped up "What's everyone's favorite FF game?" I responded with IX (This was before the PC/PS4 port), and I was kicked from the group because "Discussion of non-Nintendo games/systems is not allowed."
But even small third party avoid nintendo. How come games like star ocean 5, and Berseria are on pc but not wiiu/switch?
To be fair, the case of Konami is actually pretty weird, for some reasone being with Nintendo makes them starting games again, i mean bomberman super r is not the best game ever, but at least they're trying to bring back those dead games. Capcom in the other hand don't even handle over Mega Man who could be again a smash hit in the Nintendo Switch (just look at azure gunvolt and that new game dragon marked for dead)
Didn't Capcom release XX for Switch, and Ultra Street Fighter 2? I mean, I know they're enhanced ports, but it's something.
Those sound fine. They sound different, but they're fine. I don't know what it is with you guys and your hate boner for SNES's soundchip. I don't know, maybe you just don't like softer sounding music. That's just a difference in taste though, not quality. You prefer a more arcade like sound. But for fuck's sake, even Gradius 3 has an arcade-like soundtrack.
But that's the thing, if you had friends to play with nothing on the PS1 was worthwhile. If you didn't have friends the PS1 was a god send.
I don't know. How come?
How is Star Ocean 5 small? It's published by Square Enix. Of course they're going to avoid Nintendo. Square had has a grudge against them since the fucking '90s. Tales is skipping Nintendo because Baba doesn't want it on anything but PlayStation. He pretty much controls everything.
What sort of discussion board was it though? Was it Nintendo only? What was the name of the discussion board?
The PS1's main edge over the N64 was that discs could store more data and be mass produced far cheaper than cartridges (though carts could still load and process faster). As such bigger games like FF couldn't work on the N64 cart given its space issues.
The PS2's DVDs could also hold more than Nintendo's proprietary discs. Of course this is before factoring in the fact that the PS2 was on track to be a bigger success than the Cube out of the gate
Didn't baba got "promoted" out of the company? i'm pretty sure we could see a new Tales of exclusive for the Switch in the next year.
>Not to say that multiplayer games are inherently better.
That's just an excuse for people who only owned one system
N64 was actually when I stopped being an Nintendo only gamer.
Oh, did he? Good, that guy was a fucking drain on the series. I'm glad he's gone. Maybe Namco can make Tales great again.
Yeah, but the fans won't. I get that they're salty Capcom is purposely ignoring Nintendo, but why do they wish for the worst for Capcom games, then expect them to immediately jump ship to the Switch? Sony is backing Capcom financially, so even their biggest fuck ups are insured. So many Sup Forumstards want MHW to fail, only to want MH5 on Switch. It really boggles the mind.
I would fucking like to know, I want jrpgs on the switch. Tales, Trails, Star ocean, Final Fantasy, Atelier, I want them on the switch. I have no idea what nintendo is fucking doing when none of those series are exclusive.
I don't get why people say N64 wasn't sufficient enough for them. Maybe if you're into RPGs, but it had plenty of games to keep me occupied throughout the generation. I guess if you're not into Nintendo then of course you won't like it. But even then there were games like Bomberman 64 to play by yourself. The story mode was huge.I understand that it's not as good as the SNES, nothing ever will be, but that doesn't mean it wasn't worth owning back then
Star Ocean 4 sucked. Did they at least make 5 good?
Yeah Square Enix hired him
"On February 21, 2017, Square Enix announced the formation of a new development studio, Studio Istolia, with Baba the president of the studio and producer of its first game Project Prelude Rune"
Looks like he is now going to ruin SE
To be honest, I never was a fan of Monster Hunter, even when it was exclusive to Nintendo consoles. What I really want is more Megaman, Street Fighter, etc. I know it's a longshot, but I really hope they make another Ghosts 'n Goblins one day. Really, I was more of a fan of their classic games, not as much into Resident Evil or DMC.
It was developed on a dime by Tri-ace. SE on the label doesn't mean it gets a big budget. Also seeing as SE has a relationship with Nintendo it's even weirder that SO5 is not on the WiiU. The graphics are comparable to Xenoblade chronicles x.
Why do not exclusive third party games, made in Japan, not get published on the hardware of a top Japanese console maker?
How quick to change from must buy for 3DS huh?
Its MH butthurt
>Square hired him
Uh oh.
>Square had has a grudge against them since the fucking '90s.
Is that why Bravely Default is exclusive and most Dragon Quest games as well?
It's because the samurai hold long standing grudges
No.
Im salty with them because they can't work their fucking asses to make a new fucking mega man. i mean, how hard it could be make another want with the help of inti creates or even fucking Nintendo?
ITT people ask questions and receive answers but deny them and end up shitposting anyway
Looks the the grudge suddenly resurfaced, because they made Dragon Quest go multi-platform again.
SE has a relationship with Nintendo, but it's complicated. On the one hand they release some games, on the other hand they have no intention of ever bringing Final Fantasy back to Nintendo consoles. I swear, it's like they still remember when Yamauchi told them to fuck off and refuse to release any FFs unless they're old ports.
Of course, the simplest explanation might be that the Wii U just wasn't selling enough. I don't know. I don't personally know the executives, these are just conjectures.
Well that's why nintendo gets no jrpgs? Because they said jrpgs are for losers 15 years ago, when the n64 was bleeding jrpgs to the ps1?
The goemon games where pretty good too, just look at this fucking game over screen.
Well, they still refuse to release Final Fantasy on their platforms, and Dragon Quest is multiplat again. Why is this?
Why does nintendo not try to mend burned bridges?
because they made another gimped system with a stupid controller as the follow-up to the n64
You know, I regret not getting this at the time. I wanted it, but then I got distracted by other games. I really should try Goemon one of these days. People knock the 64 and say it only had Nintendo games, but they forget some really fucking great titles back in the day.
Iwata tried, but ultimately failed, most likely due to the Wii U being a pretty bad idea. I think Kimishima is doing a great job though, because Switch has UE4 and Vulcan, making it much easier to develop games on the platform. I think he is more accomodating than his predecessors.
But I think it will take a while before the old wounds heal. You can tell that Square is feeling some trepadation.
Man the Bomberman games in the N64 where in another lever, the charm and the love poured on those games was magnificent also the OST was pure extacy, specially the soundtrack from Bomberman Hero.
youtube.com
Maybe the N64 lacked a lot of good RPG's (Paper Mario being one if not the only one that got mainstream appeal because is fucking Mario) but still we got a lot of gems and games that revolutionized the industry, with the platform genre being a lot of the good chunk of the console.

Its quite hard to find shmups with bad soundtracks though, don't get me wrong i like a lot of SNES soundtracks but i just think the MD and PC Engine sound is better.
Did Enix ever got mad with Nintendo in that generation? I know they realeased some games on the N64, but maybe that was just for pity or something like that.
No that was Inafune taking unnessecary intiative in RE4 and Viewtiful Joe's case
Lower standards.

Don't know. I mean Sony did with the Monster Hunter team. Yeah, I get the whole Nippon honoru bullshit, but forgiveness is possible. I remember when the 'Monster Hunter 5 PS4' leaks where going around, and Sup Forums was in disbelief that Monster Hunter would ever return to PlayStation because Sony neglected to help Capcom with server issues almost a decade ago. You think that's stupid right then and there considering they had already in a partnership for almost two years at this point.
