Everything is pointing towards the development being either rushed as hell due to either executive meddling, Boom failing, or development of the engine (or all of the above).

The fact that Infinite, the poster child mysterious new character, gets no fucking explanation in the main game and has to fall back on Episode Shadow and comics is pretty damning.

Sonic is the biggest JUST franchise in video game history. Yeah, Mania was great. I played the fuck out of it. It's greatness doesn't mean Sonic hasn't objectively been awful since the Genesis days, especially given that its whole concept is being the "real" Sonic 4.
