What's the secret to getting good at fighting games?
Fighting games are for faggots.
Same as everything, retard.
Practice.

Get your ass kicked online 1000 times, then 1000 more. Have fun!
Learning your fundamentals.
Being able to adapt and explore different rhythms until you find one that sticks, or finding one that you already understand.
Done. What's the next step?
Being born with a talent
>believing practice meme
Watch YouTube vids and practice in practice mode
if you haven't already gotten good, then you're not getting good
I suggest watching professionals, memorizing moves, learning to block well, play 1-3 characters at max.
There are three secrets to getting good at fighting games.
The first one is to play a lot. There are so many fighting games skills that are only attainable by playing a lot, this is how you learn to react to situations, by having been in them countless times before.
The second secret is to do your research. I'm not talking about learn your combos and all that shit, combos are legitimately the tip of the iceburg when it comes to fighting games, if you ever get good at a fighting game you will understand that. Watch your own replays, analyse how you can improve, do your training mode (not only for combo practice but for setting up situations and understand how to deal with them), watch the replays of professional players and emulate aspects of their game that will benefit you, this is the best way to get ideas for how you play neutral when you're learning any fighting game or character.
Finally, the most important secret. Have fun playing your game. The more fun you have, the more you'll play the game, the more you'll be thinking about the game, the more you'll be willing to research how to improve, the more time you'll spend in training mode, the list goes on...
Anybody can get good at fighting games by following these steps, it's just a matter of patience and persistence in learning.
first, stop playing NRS games if you seriously want to get into fighting games
then start learning the basics: landing speical inputs reliably, blocking low then high for jump ins/overheads, anti air on reaction with normals/specials, tech grabs, learn a decent bread and butter combo with the character of your choice
>go to your locals
>review and anaylise your own play, find out what you can be doing better at/what you aren't doing that you should be
>if there's competitive community hubs, join those and use them
>try to stay up to date with new tech, combos, and the meta in general
>practice
Something I find helpful in general, was to not worry about everything I know I should or could be doing or needed to be better at at once, and instead, only focus on 1-2 things I know I needed to improve at at once as I play. If you worry about all 30 things you need to improve at, you'll be distracted and won't actually be able to remeber them to do them during the match even if it's a simple "X is a punish for Y". If you only worry about 1-2, then you can more easily focus on actually implementing those changes or being better at executing on whatever the thing is as you play and keep them in mind.
Eventually you'll notice you've improved at them, and can cycle them out for another 1-2 things. Lately i've lapsed on this and have started to get overhwlemed myself and my improvement has stagnatted as a result, for instance. The fact that Pokken's scene isn't too big also doesn't help, while my state has 3 monthlies, which is decent, especially for a bumfuck nowhere state, I can only actually go to 1 of them due to a lack of transporation, really wish the one near me was a weekly.
While this is absolutely true, you can't exactly just "learn" fundamentals like you can punishes or setups or combos, fundamentals and neutral is a lot more abstract and requires a lot more actual gradual practice and expierence moreso then just "learning" and picking up info.
Go to bed Owlturd.
Oh, also, focus on learning your character's tools and that game's general systems and mechanics at first rather then fancy tech and optimal combos and shit.
Once you understand that particular's game's idiosyncrasies and what each of your character's moves do and what their utility is and have that sort of muscle memory (not evn just for the input on reaction, but just mentally "I need to land the move that does this"), then you can worry about doing more complicated exuctional stuff like stricter to execute tech or combos.
Not playing a dead genre.
Have fun, keep playing and learn from your mistakes.
If you feel like you can't progress - consult forums or youtube guides, but never give them more than 10% of your actual playing time.
Really, you just have to love the game, have fun and actually want to get better. If any of those three points are not true for you - it would be better to drop that game asap
>"dead" genre
>has always been a niche one but in no way dead
fuck off
Practice your bread and butter combos and play a lot.
