People keep saying the contrary and that blows my mind. The environment is so much more lively with more to do, the artstyle is better, the combat is more fun with more decent options. I can't think of a single thing that the first game did better aside from the main story, I guess?

I bought the first game a while ago, played for a few hours and dropped it then. I thought I was really going to like it so it's a shame. Does it improve after a while? Should I dive back in?

If you've beaten the first boss and still think it's boring you won't change your opinion but I'd recommend to play at least that long. The beginning really is pretty boring but after you can fly for some time and actually fight real enemies it gets fun.

Didn't even play the dlc because I was already tired of the gameplay when I beat the mains story. I'll take your word for it, but also will defend GR2 by saying a lot of non-dlc side missions were still interesting.

I didn't really like the story in either games for their own reasons. GR2 became more complicated in it and the pacing sucked, but I found the craziness of it more interesting than the first game's story. I can't even remember much of the first story.

Camera was annoying at times. That jupiter style mission was hell.

It's not really about balance. It's about how much creativity and momentum you can have in the sequel. Stasis is op, but far more enjoyable than gravity kick, which was something that was never fun for me. The styles are not much more than flavoring, but it was a much needed flavoring.
