Piracy improves sales unless if you're pirating something from an extremely large company. It increases exposure and smaller developers need as much exposure as they can get.
However if you pirate and try to justify it by saying it improves sales but you've never actually convinced anyone else to buy the game then you're retarded.

Just because you wouldn't buy the product after pirating it doesn't mean other people won't do it. You clearly have a very limited perspective. Indie developers have tracked sales and found that there are in fact people who will buy the game after pirating it.
